• Sent to Triple-A
Atlanta optioned Williams to Triple-A Gwinnett on Friday.

Advice: The 27-year-old had his contract selected by Atlanta in mid-April, but he tallied just four plate appearances during his month with the big club. Joey Wendle was signed to a major-league contract Friday and is taking Williams' place on the roster. Rotowire.com Today, 9:28 am

  • Gets MLB deal from Atlanta
Atlanta signed Wendle to a one-year contract Friday.

Advice: Wendle was released by the Mets earlier this week after hitting just .222/.243/.250 in 37 plate appearances but has quickly caught on with their division rivals. The utility infielder made the All-Star team with the Rays in 2021 but has produced just a .604 OPS in three seasons since then. Wendle will back up all over the infield in Atlanta. • Promoted, starting Friday
Atlanta recalled Kerr from Triple-A Gwinnett to start Friday's game at Pittsburgh.

Advice: The left-hander was optioned to Gwinnett following Monday's twin bill against the Padres but will be allowed to quickly rejoin the big club as AJ Smith-Shawver (oblique) lands on the injured list. Kerr's four appearances for Atlanta this season have all come out of the bullpen, but he's pitched well with a 2.89 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 10:0 K:BB across 9.1 innings. He threw 64 pitches over 3.1 frames in his last outing and figures to face some minor workload limitations since that was his longest outing of the campaign. Rotowire.com Today, 9:22 am

  • Lands on IL with oblique strain
Atlanta placed Smith-Shawver on the 15-day injured list Friday with a strained left oblique.

Advice: Smith-Shawver struck out four over 4.1 scoreless innings in a spot start versus the Cubs on Thursday but evidently suffere an oblique injury in the process. It's not clear at this point how long he might be sidelined, but oblique strains generally require longer than a minimum stay on the IL. Smith-Shawver might head back to Triple-A Gwinnett once he's healthy, though it could depend on Atlanta's rotation needs at the time. Rotowire.com Today, 9:20 am
  • Gets rare start Thursday
Williams got the start at third base Thursday and went 0-for-2 in a win over the Cubs.

Advice: Zack Short has seen the bulk of the playing time at the hot corner while Austin Riley (side) has been on the shelf, but Williams got his first start of the season at any position Thursday, although he didn't do much with the opportunity. The 27-year-old utility player has only two other plate appearances on the season, and he's still looking for his first hit of 2024. Rotowire.com Today, 7:23 am

  • Decent outing versus Cubs
Smith-Shawver allowed three hits and two walks while striking out four over 4.1 shutout innings Thursday versus the Cubs, taking a no-decision.

Advice: Smith-Shawver pitched fairly well, aside from needing 87 pitches (55 strikes) to get 13 outs. It's a much better showing than his 6.10 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 35:17 K:BB over 31 innings for Triple-A Gwinnett to begin 2024. The right-hander's call-up could have been merely for a spot start after Atlanta's doubleheader earlier in the week, so it's unclear if the team will make room for him beyond Thursday. Darius Vines, who is expected to take the mound Friday in Pittsburgh, is the other candidate for the vacant No. 5 starter job. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 6:11 pm
  • AJ Smith-Shawver sharp in season debut vs. Cubs
AJ Smith-Shawver fired 4 1/3 scoreless innings on Thursday in a no-decision against the Cubs.

Advice: Smith-Shawver looked sharp on Thursday afternoon against the Cubs, carrying a shutout into the fifth inning before Braves manager Brian Snitker elected to turn things over to the bullpen rather than let him face the top of Chicago’s lineup for a third time. He surrendered just three hits, struck out four and issued only a pair of walks. He generated nine swinging strikes and finished with a 24 percent CSW. The 21-year-old righty rocketed to the big leagues last year, but hasn’t had a ton of success at the highest level. There’s a possibility he gets an extended look over the rest of the year, but that remains to be seen. He’s currently in line to take the ball next Wednesday against the Nationals. • Rehab assignment imminent
Boyle (back) is set to begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Las Vegas in coming days, the Associated Press reports.

Advice: Boyle completed a "two-up" bullpen session Sunday that apparently went well, given the news of a rehab assignment serving as his next step. The right-hander was placed on the injured list May 6 after being lifted from a start against the Marlins a day earlier due to a back strain, and he may need only one or two rehab starts before being deemed ready for activation. • AJ Smith-Shawver promoted for start on Thursday
Braves recalled RHP AJ Smith-Shawver from Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday.

Advice: This move was rumored yesterday and is now official. With Bryce Elder disappointing in his five starts, the 21-year-old Smith-Shawver will get a chance to stake his claim to a spot in the rotation. Daysbel Hernández was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett in a corresponding move. Smith-Shawver has improved his velocity and overall stuff+ grades this year in the minors, but his command has been an issue, leading to a decent amount of hard contact. In May, he has a 5.40 ERA and 1.47 WHIP with 19 strikeouts and nine walks in 18 1/3 innings. The potential is clearly there, but he needs to show more consistency before we feel confident about his ability to stick in the rotation this year. Rotoworld Yesterday, 8:38 am
