Player Notes

  • Reds recall Stephenson for Saturday start
Reds recalled RHP Robert Stephenson from Triple-A Louisville.

Advice: He'll get the start against the Marlins on Saturday night. The 24-year-old has been a disaster in 13 appearances out of the Reds' bullpen this season, posting an 8.03 ERA, 1.99 WHIP and 27/16 K/BB ratio, but looked much better in the rotation at Triple-A. Still, this is a situation where daily players would be wise to fire up a Marlins' stack or two on Saturday. Rotoworld.com 35 minutes ago
  • Brandon Maurer takes third blown save
Brandon Maurer took his first blown save in two months after giving up three runs in the ninth Friday against the Giants.

Advice: Maurer could have closed this one out without a run scoring, but Jerry Meals wouldn't give him a borderline pitch against Brandon Crawford with two strikes and two outs. Crawford singled in a run, bringing pinch-hitter Conor Gillaspie to the plate as the tying run. Meals again failed to call a strike on a close pitch to begin the at-bat, and Gillaspie hit the 1-0 offering out to right. Maurer hadn't given up a run since June 25 and he's 20-for-23 saving games this year, so his job is safe. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 11:34 pm
  • Ryan Madson works eighth in tie game
Ryan Madson pitched a scoreless eighth inning in a tie game Friday against the Diamondbacks.

Advice: Madson has pitched the eighth inning in both of his appearances since being acquired by the Nationals. He still could end up with saves if Sean Doolittle gets hurt (always possible) or struggles (seemingly less likely), but he seems to be the clear No. 2 choice at the moment. • Williams gives up five runs in win over COL
Trevor Williams walked away with the win after allowing five runs over 6 2/3 innings against the Rockies on Friday.

Advice: Williams got lots of help from his offense, but he settled down for the most part after giving up three runs in the first inning. This was the first time he had allowed more than three earned runs in a start since June 10, though it’s not unexpected in a Coors Field start. The 25-year-old owns a 4.74 ERA through 14 starts and six relief appearances on the year and lines up for a start against the Giants on the road next week. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 9:47 pm
  • White Sox acquire Jean Machi from Mariners
White Sox acquired RHPs Jean Machi and Mark Lowe from the Mariners for cash considerations.

Advice: The 35-year-old hurler appeared in five games for the Mariners this season, compiling a 1.17 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 4/4 K/BB ratio. He'll add bullpen depth at the minor league level for now, but should get a shot with the White Sox in relatively short order. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 9:23 pm
