  • Tyler Goeddel optioned to Double-A
Phillies optioned OF Tyler Goeddel to Double-A Reading.

Advice: The Phils kept Goeddel around all season last year after picking him in the Rule 5 Draft even though he batted just .192/.258/.291, but now they can send him down without losing him. The 24-year-old could use some more seasoning. 50 minutes ago
  • Blue Jays and Phillies linked to Angel Pagan
Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports the Blue Jays and Phillies have shown interest in free agent Angel Pagan.

Advice: Pagan had a deal fall through with Baltimore after failing a physical this month, but looked healthy in the World Baseball Classic, hitting .286 in eight games for runner-up Puerto Rico. The 35-year-old has received minor league offers but is reportedly holding out for a major league deal in the range of $5 million. His market should pick up as we near Opening Day. Yesterday, 6:54 pm

  • Contreras goes 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run
Willson Contreras went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored in Thursday's tie with the Diamondbacks.

Advice: The sophomore catcher is now batting .333 with three home runs through 39 at-bats. He turned in a very promising rookie season in 2016, notching a .282 batting average with 12 home runs and 35 RBI in 76 games. He figures to benefit from a much larger share of the playing time behind the plate in Chicago this season. He is going as one of the top five catchers in fantasy drafts this month. • Gregor Blanco scratched with side tightness
Gregor Blanco was scratched from Thursday's Cactus League game against the Cubs after experiencing tightness in his right side.

Advice: He'll be reevaluated on Friday. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo is calling him day-to-day. The 33-year-old has had a quiet spring, hitting just .225 with two RBI and one steal over 40 Cactus League at-bats. This injury obviously won't help Blanco's chances of making the Opening Day roster. • Yasmany Tomas should be ready for Opening Day
Yasmany Tomas (oblique) hit in the batting cage on Thursday.

Advice: He hasn't played in a Cactus League game since injuring his left oblique on March 6. Tomas is expected to ramp up his activity on Friday. "I feel very comfortable in saying that if he has another good day on [Friday] that he's going to be ready for Opening Day," said manager Torey Lovullo. Tomas led the Diamondbacks with 31 homers last year and remains a solid option in the later rounds of mixed league drafts. Yesterday, 5:15 pm
  • Renfroe goes 2-for-4 with two RBI Thursday
Hunter Renfroe went 2-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs in a win over the Angels on Thursday.

Advice: He had an RBI single in the seventh inning and an RBI double in the eighth. He is now the owner of a .298 batting average with two home runs in 57 Cactus League at-bats. He made an 11-game cameo in the majors last year and slugged .371/.389/.800 with four homers and 14 RBI in just 36 plate appearances. The 25-year-old's strong spring has solidified his job as the Padres' starting right fielder on Opening Day. Yesterday, 5:13 pm
  • Zobrist (neck) hoping to return on Saturday
Ben Zobrist said his neck was feeling better on Thursday.

Advice: Zobrist missed his second game in a row on Thursday but is targeting Saturday for his return. There was never much doubt about his availability for Opening Day. The reigning World Series MVP has hit .200 over 30 Cactus League at-bats this spring. Yesterday, 4:54 pm
  • Almonte goes 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run
Abraham Almonte went 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored during a win over the Rockies on Thursday.

Advice: All three hits were singles, including a grounder to right field that drove in a pair of runs. He is now batting .385 with two homers and 10 RBI so far this spring. Almonte missed the first 80 games of last season to a PED suspension before returning to hit .264/.294/.401 with one home run and 22 RBI in 194 plate appearances. He hopes his performance in Cactus League action will earn him a roster slot as a backup outfielder. Yesterday, 4:43 pm
  • Starling Marte belts grand slam Thursday
Starling Marte cranked a grand slam off of the Red Sox' Heath Hembree on Thursday.

Advice: It was Marte's only hit in four trips to the dish, although he also plated an additional run with an RBI groundout. Marte's Grapefruit League action was interrupted by the World Baseball Classic and a minor ankle injury, but he's 6-for-15 with a home run and a couple steals so far. Yesterday, 3:21 pm
  • Inciarte returns to Braves' lineup Thursday
Ender Inciarte is back in the Braves' lineup Thursday against the Tigers.

Advice: He's batting leadoff and playing center field. Inciarte is back after spending the last two weeks representing Venezuela at the World Baseball Classic. He impressed at the WBC, hitting . 292 with three RBI over seven games. The 26-year-old is entering his second year with Atlanta after arriving from Arizona in the Shelby Miller trade last offseason. Yesterday, 2:57 pm
  • Odubel Herrera knocks first spring homer
Odubel Herrera smacked his first homer of the spring and also added a single in Thursday's loss to the Twins.

Advice: Herrera was scratched from Wednesday's lineup due to some cramping, but clearly he's fine. He took Nick Tepesch deep in the first inning and then showed off his trademark bat flip that we've all come to know and love. Herrera has eight hits in 22 at-bats this spring and will open the season as the Phillies' No. 3 hitter. Yesterday, 2:26 pm
  • Shawn O'Malley (appendectomy) out 10-14 days
Shawn O'Malley will need at least 10-14 days to fully recover from his appendectomy.

Advice: That puts O'Malley in a race against the clock for Opening Day. If O'Malley is unavailable, Taylor Motter would likely fill a utility role during his absence. O'Malley was hitting .278 with four steals in 16 Cactus League appearances before his appendectomy. Yesterday, 1:56 pm
  • Pollock (groin) aiming to return to games Fri
A.J. Pollock (groin) is now aiming to return to Cactus League action on Friday.

Advice: Pollock had been scheduled to return Thursday, but the Diamondbacks' spring training facility got hit with some morning rain and manager Torey Lovullo said he didn't want to chance anything on wet grass. Pollock hasn't appeared in a Cactus League game since March 12 because of tightness in his left groin, but the expectation is that he will be ready for Opening Day. Yesterday, 12:28 pm
  • Souza ripped open blister on hand Thursday
Steven Souza ripped open a blister on the palm of his left hand Thursday in a Grapefruit League game.

Advice: That's why he made an early exit. Souza could be held out of action for a couple of days, but this shouldn't affect his status for the opening of the 2017 regular season. Unless it's a blister of the Rich Hill variety. Yesterday, 11:55 am
  • Ethier underwent X-rays, CT scan Tuesday
Andre Ethier underwent X-rays and a CT scan on his ailing back Tuesday.

Advice: Ethier also received an epidural injection and told reporters Thursday that he felt immediate pain relief afterward. He's still awaiting the full results of Tuesday's exam. The veteran outfielder looks questionable for the beginning of the 2017 regular season, but there is nothing official yet. Yesterday, 11:41 am
  • Puig (calf) back in Dodgers' lineup Thursday
Yasiel Puig (calf) is back in the Dodgers' Cactus League lineup on Thursday.

Advice: Puig has been held out of action this week after feeling a tweak in his left calf Sunday while trying to steal a base. It sounds like this is minor, but we all know about Puig's long history of leg issues. He remains a high-risk, high-reward type of fantasy outfielder leading into the 2017 regular season. Yesterday, 11:25 am
  • Marlins option Destin Hood to AAA NOLA
Marlins optioned OF Destin Hood to Triple-A New Orleans.

Advice: Hood spent most of the 2016 season at Triple-A, batting .267/.316/.435 with 15 home runs, 80 RBI, and 11 stolen bases in 126 games. The 26-year-old will continue operating as organizational outfield depth for the Fish. Yesterday, 7:50 am

  • Taylor (family) returns to Nats camp
Michael Taylor is back in Nationals camp Thursday.

Advice: Taylor was excused from the club for a week following the death of his father. The funeral is actually on Monday, but Taylor is fighting for a spot on the Nationals' bench and wanted to get back and play. Yesterday, 7:34 am
  • Reds option OF Phillip Ervin to Triple-A
Reds optioned OF Phillip Ervin to Triple-A Louisville; reassigned RHP Alejandro Chacin, RHP Evan Mitchell, C Chad Wallach, C Shawn Zarraga and INF Zach Vincej to minor league camp.

Advice: Ervin, 24, has yet to make his major league debut. That could come later this season if he impresses down on the farm. The former first-round pick spent the whole of the 2016 campaign at Double-A Pensacola, where he hit .239/.362/.399 with 13 homers, 45 RBI and 36 steals across 419 at-bats. Wednesday, 3:00 pm

Carlos Gomez (shoulder) doesn't expect to miss much time.

Advice: Gomez exited Tuesday's Cactus League game after jamming his left shoulder, but it doesn't sound like a major concern. Consider him day-to-day for now. Wednesday, 8:33 am
