  • Martinez playing first base in Winter League
Jose Martinez is using the Venezuelan Winter League to familiarize himself at first base.

Advice: Martinez has spent most of his career in the outfield, and while first base may not be as hard as Ron Washington said it was in that movie, there's still a learning curve. The move is another way to get Martinez in the lineup, as he was one of the few pleasant surprises at the big league level for St. Louis this past year. He did get some action at the position but looked shaky at times. Yesterday, 6:43 pm
  • Lewis still dealing with knee issues
Baseball America's Bob Dutton reports that outfield prospect Kyle Lewis is still dealing with lingering issues in his right knee.

Advice: Lewis was forced to leave the Arizona Fall League at the end of October because of soreness in his surgically-repaired knee, and while there wasn't any structural damage found it sounds like this could be a chronic issue. The 2016 first-round pick has more talent than any prospect in the Mariners system, but there's a looming question about whether he will ever be able to truly recover from the horrific ACL tear that has seen him miss all but 49 games in his two years as a pro. There's just as much risk in Lewis's profile as there is reward at this point. Yesterday, 4:44 pm

  • Mariners, Jon Jay have 'momentum' on deal
According to Mark Feinsand of, there is "momentum" toward an agreement between the Mariners and free agent outfielder Jon Jay.

Advice: Jay has never shown much power, but he can play all three outfield spots and he batted .294 with an excellent .374 on-base percentage in 141 games this past season for the Cubs. The 32-year-old former second-round pick of the Cardinals signed a one-year, $8 million deal with Chicago last winter and figures to land something similar this offseason. Seattle has an opening in center field with Jarrod Dyson no longer under contract. This could come together quickly. Yesterday, 12:48 pm

  • O's acquire Jaycob Brugman from the A's
Orioles acquired OF Jaycob Brugman from the Athletics for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Advice: Brugman was designated for assignment by Oakland on Monday. The 25-year-old batted just .266 with a .688 OPS in 162 plate appearances this past season at the major league level, but he can play all three outfield spots and his minor league numbers suggest he's capable of better things offensively. Brugman will be in the running for a bench job next spring in Orioles camp. Yesterday, 11:15 am
  • Nats 'don't envision' Werth returning in 2018
According to Jorge Castillo of the Washington Post, the Nationals "don’t envision" free agent Jayson Werth in their plans for the 2018 season.

Advice: Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo suggested earlier this month that he hadn't closed the door on Werth returning, but it's simply not a good fit. The 38-year-old outfielder appeared in only 70 games this summer due to a bone bruise in his left foot and he batted just .226/.322/.393 when healthy. Werth also rated very poorly defensively. Adam Eaton, Michael Taylor, and Bryce Harper figure to make up the Nationals' starting outfield next season. Tuesday, 2:19 pm

  • Will Venable named Cubs' first base coach
Will Venable has been named the Cubs' new first base and outfield coach.

Advice: Venable joined the Cubs' front office this past September as a special assistant to the president and general manager, and now he'll move into an on-field coaching role for the 2018 campaign. The 35-year-old graduated from Princeton University before playing parts of nine seasons in the major leagues. Tuesday, 1:06 pm

  • Aaron Judge undergoes shoulder surgery
Aaron Judge underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder Monday.

Advice: The procedure involved a loose-body removal and cartilage clean-up. The good news is that he's expected to be recovered in time for spring training. It was acknowledged that Judge had a shoulder issue during his slide after the All-Star break, though he tried to downplay the severity of the situation. Obviously it was more serious than he wanted to say. Judge won the AL Rookie of the Year Award and finished second in the balloting for the AL MVP after batting .284/.422/.627 with a league-leading 52 homers. Tuesday, 12:28 pm
  • MIA/SF had 'deeper discussions' on Stanton
Mark Feinsand of hears from a source that the Marlins and Giants have had "deeper discussions" on a possible Giancarlo Stanton trade.

Advice: The source believes that the Giants are the favorites to land Stanton, though the Cardinals are also in the mix. Craig Mish of SiriusXM reported Monday that there was talk of packaging Stanton with Dee Gordon for second baseman Joe Panik and prospects Tyler Beede and Chris Shaw, but it's unclear if such a proposal is seriously being entertained by Miami or how much money would be exchanged. One thing we do know is that Stanton would likely be amenable to a trade to San Francisco. He has the power in this situation due to his full no-trade clause. Tuesday, 8:19 am
  • Tigers add Michael Gerber to 40-man roster
Tigers purchased the contract of OF Michael Gerber from Triple-A Toledo.

Advice: Gerber, 25, hit .304/.373/.496 with 14 homers and 10 steals over three levels this season. He now can't be taken in the Rule 5 Draft. Monday, 6:46 pm
  • Orlando Calixte designated for assignment
Giants designated INF/OF Orlando Calixte for assignment.

Advice: Calixte hit just .143/.185/.163 in 29 games for the Giants in 2017. He could clear waivers. Monday, 6:15 pm

  • Pirates add top prospect Meadows to 40-man
Pirates purchased the contract of OF Austin Meadows from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Advice: Meadows, 22, had a second straight injury-shortened season in 2017 and hit only .250/.311/.359 in 72 games at Indianapolis. He remains one of the top prospects in the game but needs to stay healthy and produce in 2018. Monday, 3:00 pm
  • Indians claim Rob Refsnyder off waivers
Indians claimed INF/OF Rob Refsnyder off waivers from the Blue Jays.

Advice: It's his third team since the midseason trade deadline, as the Blue Jays acquired him via trade from the Yankees in July. Refsnyder has hit only .233/.306/.311 during his chances in the majors, but he's hit well in the minors and is versatile. Monday, 2:05 pm

  • Blue Jays a 'dark horse' for J.D. Martinez?
Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports that the Blue Jays "could emerge as a dark horse candidate" for J.D. Martinez.

Advice: They are expected to let Jose Bautista walk as a free agent, which would create an opening in right field. The Blue Jays have also been connected to Jay Bruce. Martinez will certainly cost a pretty penny this winter, as his agent, Scott Boras, is reportedly seeking a seven-year, $210 million contract for his client. Monday, 1:50 pm

  • White Sox add Luis Alexander Basabe to 40-man
White Sox purchased the contract of OF Luis Alexander Basabe from High-A Winston-Salem.

Advice: Acquired from the Red Sox in the Chris Sale deal, Basabe is a talented but raw player who hit only .221/.320/.320 in High-A this past season. He's now protected from the Rule 5 Draft. Monday, 1:24 pm
  • Eloy Jimenez added to 40-man roster
White Sox purchased the contract of OF Eloy Jimenez from Double-A Birmingham.

Advice: Acquired from the Cubs in the Jose Quintana trade, Jimenez hit .312/.379/.568 with 19 homers between High- and Double-A this season. Slated to turn 21 in a week, Jimenez is among the top prospects in the game. Monday, 1:20 pm
  • Tyler O'Neill added to 40-man roster
Cardinals purchased the contract of OF Tyler O'Neill from Triple-A Memphis.

Advice: Acquired from the Mariners at midseason for Marco Gonzalez, O'Neill hit .246/.321/.499 with 31 homers and 14 steals at the Triple-A level this season. They needed to add him to the 40-man roster in order to keep him away from the Rule 5 Draft. Monday, 1:14 pm
  • Blake Swihart could be tried at second base
Peter Gammons of reports that the Red Sox could try Blake Swihart out at second base in 2018.

Advice: Swihart played first base, caught and functioned as the DH during his stint in the Dominican Winter League while slashing .407/.515/.481. He's willing to play anywhere that's necessary to help the club and the Red Sox have a hole to fill at second base with Dustin Pedroia set to miss the first two months of the season. Sunday, 5:52 pm
  • Red Sox, Phillies still in on Carlos Santana's Jon Morosi reports that Carlos Santana is "drawing continued interest" from the Red Sox and Phillies.

Advice: The Red Sox are an obvious match since they have an opening at either first base or designated hitter, while the fit with the Phillies is more difficult to figure out since they have Rhys Hoskins at first. Santana, who will turn 32 just after Opening Day in 2018, batted .259/.363/.455 with 23 home runs for the Indians this past season. The Mets and Mariners have also been connected to him.
