  • Allen walks tightrope but earns fifth save
Cody Allen gave up three hits but managed to avoid allowing any runs in earning his fifth save Thursday against the Astros.

Advice: It's a dance Allen knows well, as he's always seemingly one pitch away from disaster. The good news for the right-hander is that he usually escapes unharmed, as he did Thursday when a Jose Altuve leadoff single was erased after Altuve was caught stealing and, despite two more singles that put runners at first and third with one out, he got out of the jam with a popout and a strikeout. Through nine outings, Allen has a 1.00 ERA and 1.22 WHIP with 18 strikeouts to one walk. Rotoworld.com 47 minutes ago
  • Buddy Boshers joining Twins on Friday
Buddy Boshers will be recalled from Triple-A Rochester on Friday.

Advice: He'll take the roster spot vacated by Hector Santiago, who will be away from the team while he attends his grandmother's funeral. Under normal circumstances the Twins would have to keep Boshers in the minors for at least 10 days (he was optioned to Rochester after Sunday's game), but that rule is being waived because Santiago is going on the bereavement list. Boshers tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings in his only outing for the Twins this year. Rotoworld.com Today, 4:29 pm

  • Diamondbacks call up T.J. McFarland
Diamondbacks purchased the contract of LHP T.J. McFarland from Triple-A Reno.

Advice: Shelby Miller (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day DL in the corresponding move. McFarland hasn't allowed a run over 11 innings for Reno this year. He'll work as a left-hander specialist. Rotoworld.com Today, 3:53 pm
  • Jordan Lyles gives up four runs in relief
Jordan Lyles gave up four runs in 1 1/3 innings out of the pen Thursday against the Nationals.

Advice: One of the odder decisions of the offseason was the Rockies choosing to pay Lyles $3.175 million in arbitration rather than just non-tender him. Had they went that route, they might have been able to bring him back on a minor league deal anyway. Lyles is sporting a 9.28 ERA through 10 2/3 innings out of the pen. Rotoworld.com Today, 3:49 pm
  • Latos goes six scoreless versus Cardinals
Mat Latos tossed six scoreless innings Thursday in a no-decision versus the Cardinals.

Advice: Latos walked four but held the Cardinals to three hits in the afternoon outing at Busch Stadium. Toronto lost the game in the 11th inning after Roberto Osuna blew his third save of the season in the bottom of the ninth. Rotoworld.com Today, 2:26 pm
  • Carson Smith (elbow) had a setback
Carson Smith (elbow) recently had a setback in his recovery from Tommy John surgery.

Advice: That might explain why Smith was just transferred to the 60-day DL. Smith has resumed long tossing but hasn't thrown off a mound in two weeks. The Red Sox were hoping to have Smith back in early June but that's no longer an option. The 27-year-old has yet to pitch a game for the Red Sox since arriving in a trade with Seattle in December 2015. Rotoworld.com Today, 2:15 pm
    60-Day DL
  • Hector Neris notches third save
Hector Neris needed just seven pitches to pick up his third save of the year Thursday against the Marlins.

Advice: Six of those were strikes. Neris protected a 2-1 lead after Joaquin Benoit set him up in the eighth. The Phillies' front office wanted Benoit getting these saves, but Pete Mackanin has gotten his way so far. While no one has named Neris the closer, it's clear he's Mackanin's choice. • Jim Johnson gives up two runs to Mets
After entering the ninth with a four-run lead, Jim Johnson gave up two runs before finishing off the Mets on Thursday.

Advice: Johnson had a strong spring and a fine first couple of weeks, but he's given up four runs and seven hits over his last two appearances. It probably hasn't helped that today was just his second appearance in 10 days. His closing gig is safe, but it'd be nice to see him bounce back next time out. Rotoworld.com Today, 1:31 pm
  • Locke (biceps) nearing rehab assignment
Jeff Locke (biceps) has been pitching simulated games in Jupiter, Florida.

Advice: And if everything continues to go smoothly the left-hander should soon be cleared for a minor league rehab assignment. Locke has been out all season because of tendinitis in his left biceps. "I know he's feeling good," manager Don Mattingly told MLB.com on Thursday. "Not one report I've read that he's had any negative effect to what he's doing. He's really getting closer." Rotoworld.com Today, 11:00 am
    10-Day DL
  • Jacob Turner sticking around as reliever
Jacob Turner will be kept around to serve as a long man out of the Nationals' bullpen.

Advice: There was some thought that he might be designated for assignment after his spot start Monday, but the Nationals decided to option Matt Grace instead. Turner pitched pretty well in that outing on Monday, holding the Rockies to three runs over six innings at power-friendly Coors Field. Rotoworld.com Today, 10:44 am
  • Six shutout innings for Lee
Orioles pitching prospect Chris Lee pitched six shutout innings for Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday.

Advice: Lee allowed five scattered hits, walked just one and struck out four. Lee needed a start like this, as he'd struggled mightily in his first three outings for Norfolk. With an above-average fastball and slider and useful change, he should have more outings like this coming. He could get a chance to start for the Orioles at some point in 2017. • Strong start for Morimando
Indians prospect Shawn Morimando gave up one run in seven innings for Triple-A Columbus on Wednesday.

Advice: Morimando allowed just three hits over those seven innings, walking two and striking out five. The left-hander had been struggling coming into the outing, but with a nasty slider and three other average pitches, he has the arsenal to be effective at the next level. He could start for someone, although it might not be Cleveland. Rotoworld.com Today, 10:22 am

  • Nationals option Matt Grace to Syracuse
Nationals optioned LHP Matt Grace to Triple-A Syracuse.

Advice: Grace was only in the majors for a day and threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief against the Rockies. The 28-year-old left-hander will be back up eventually. Rotoworld.com Today, 10:21 am

  • Dodgers option Liberatore back to AAA
Dodgers optioned LHP Adam Liberatore to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Advice: The move clears a 25-man roster spot for Julio Urias, who will join the Dodgers' starting rotation Thursday against the Giants. Liberatore has made just one appearance this season at the major league level and it wasn't a good one. Rotoworld.com Today, 10:08 am

  • Danny Barnes to serve as 26th man Thurs.
Danny Barnes will serve as the Blue Jays' 26th man for Thursday's doubleheader in St. Louis.

Advice: He's only eligible to pitch in the night game. The 27-year-old right-hander has worked 3 2/3 scoreless innings of relief this season at the major league level. Rotoworld.com Today, 9:07 am
  • Tigers option Kyle Ryan to AAA Toledo
Tigers optioned LHP Kyle Ryan to Triple-A Toledo.

Advice: The move clears a 25-man roster spot for shortstop Jose Iglesias, who's been activated from the 7-day concussion disabled list. Ryan has allowed five runs on nine hits and seven walks in 5 2/3 innings of relief this season for Detroit. Rotoworld.com Today, 8:28 am

  • Cishek (hip) works scoreless Double-A frame
Steve Cishek (hip) worked a scoreless rehab inning Wednesday night with Double-A Arkansas.

Advice: A positive step for the veteran reliever, who had yielded two runs on four hits and three walks in 2 1/3 innings over his first three rehab outings. Cishek is expected to make another appearance on Thursday and could join the Mariners' active roster this weekend if that goes smoothly. Rotoworld.com Today, 8:20 am
    10-Day DL
  • Braves add Jason Motte to MLB bullpen
Braves purchased the contract of RHP Jason Motte from Triple-A Gwinnett.

Advice: Motte signed a minor league contract with Atlanta earlier this month after getting released by the Rockies at the end of spring training. The former closer will work in middle relief for the Braves. Rotoworld.com Today, 7:46 am
  • Bud Norris records third save
Bud Norris pitched a perfect ninth against the A's for his third save Wednesday.

Advice: Norris got two strikeouts, both looking, in protecting the three-run lead tonight. He's 3-for-3 in saves since Cam Bedrosian went down. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 11:32 pm
  • D'Backs demote Godley
Diamondbacks optioned RHP Zack Godley to Triple-A Reno.

Advice: Godley gave up two runs over five innings against the Padres in his spot start Wednesday in place of Shelby Miller. It's possible he'll rejoin the rotation next weekend, but the Diamondbacks don't need him before then, since they have Monday off. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 10:45 pm
