  • NEW YORKERS PULL AWAY LATE FOR 4-PEAT

New Yorkers took control of 1st place late and didn’t look back for an unprecedented fourth straight Gold after sitting in 2nd & 3rd place most of the season. They finish with 96 pts, a comfortable seven ahead of #2 My Balls Ichiro (89) after we saw the closest finish in the Roto era last season at just a point. The last two champs (New Yorkers) finished with 93 pts after the first two Roto champs (McNamee’s Heroes: 102, New Yorkers: 111) topped 100 pts. New Yorkers peaked at 98 pts on September 22 after a sudden surge in late August. They sat in the mid-to-high 80s (under 90) every day from June 10 to August 28 when they hit 90 and then kept climbing from there, in the low-to-mid 90s from August 30 to September 14 then hitting 96+ nearly every day since. Like the last two seasons and unlike the first two seasons of Roto, it was a hard-fought battle for the top spot for most of the season, with a handful of teams holding 1st place and no team cracking 100 pts except for a few days in April. Also like last season, New Yorkers had to work extremely hard to win with a league-leading 83 moves (86 last season). My Balls have medaled in three of the last four seasons, back on the podium after just missing it with a 4th-place finish last season following a Bronze in 2021 and a Silver in 2020. They started the final week trailing New Yorkers by 11 pts (97-86) but closed the gap to just 5.5 on Sunday morning after it was 7.5 for three straight days, making a final-day miracle possible, but they’d end up three pts higher than last Monday at 89 while New Yorkers fell a point to 96. Meanwhile, McNamee’s Heroes collect their second straight Bronze in an exciting finish to a tight and crowded battle after El Niño started the week 3.5 pts ahead of them in 3rd place. El Niño had a final-week collapse as they led them by at least two pts until Sunday morning, leading them by 4.5 on Thursday morning. McNamee’s still trailed them 78-76 on Saturday morning but took 3rd place from them on the final day with 78 as El Niño suddenly fell to 5th place behind 2Shadez, who trailed them 78-75 in 5th place on Saturday morning, with them each separated by a point (78, 77, 76). McNamee’s would lose a half point to 77.5 while 2Shadez fell 1.5 to 75.5 and El Niño fell a point to 75 in a narrow finish.

After dealing with offensive struggles last season and successfully patching it together with pickups, that was true for New Yorkers’ pitching this season. Like last season when J. deGrom missed over half the season, debuting in August, and fellow keeper W. Buehler (Tommy John surgery) went down in June after struggling, their pitching was ravaged again, losing ace keepers J. deGrom & S. Bieber in the first half and another keeper A. Manoah melting down (dropped on June 6 after a 6.36 ERA & 1.90 WHIP over 58 IP), sitting last in WHIP for much of the season. But they patched together a new staff and eventually got to a third-best 3.80 ERA and a middle-of-the-pack 1.23 WHIP while easily taking W by 12 with 106 and characteristically dominating K with 1,676, 209 more than the next team. Unusually, their offense carried them (other than a second-to-last AVG) as they led R (874), HR (281, third most through 2006 behind 299 by 2019 McNamee’s Heroes & 297 by 2019 2Shadez) & RBI (848) while finishing third in SB (155), led by a prolific campaign from #1 pick M. Olson (127 R, 54 HR, 139 RBI), 47 HR from K. Schwarber (claimed off waivers in May from My Balls, 33 HR for them) and 47 SB from C. Abrams (30 for them). They win their seventh title (18th medal) after finally securing their first Gold since 2008 in 2020 (four Silvers in the previous five years), with the last full decade of Head-to-Head (2009-2018) filled with unbelievably unlucky and agonizing finishes to stellar seasons (six Silvers since 2008), as Roto has treated them much better with now their fourth straight Gold.

  • (continued)

There was only a slight batting average improvement from the shift being gone with a league average of .248, not much higher than last season’s .243 mark which was the lowest in over 50 years (since .237 in 1968). The pitch clock had a major impact though as the average nine-inning game time fell to 2:39, the shortest since 1985 (2:39) after it was 3:03 last season. The bigger bases led to a big increase in stolen bases with 3,503, the most since 3,585 in 1987 and 1,017 more than last season (2,486). The 80.2% success rate was the highest in MLB history, topping 75.7% in 2021. Six players had over 40 SB compared to just one last season (J. Berti led with 41) and three had over 50; R. Acuna (73), E. Ruiz (67) & C. Carroll (54). El Niño set a new official league SB record with a whopping 206 (led by 67 from E. Ruiz & 54 from C. Carroll), obliterating the previous record of 181 by 2011 Jersey. Last season’s leader had just 125 and seven teams surpassed that mark this season. There were 5,868 HR, 653 more than last season, which is fourth most all-time behind 2021, 2017 & 2019 (6,776). ERA & WHIP spiked drastically as My Balls led ERA at 3.74 compared to 3.11 last season with eight teams under 3.50, while Jersey led WHIP at 1.18 compared to 1.08 last season with seven teams under that mark. Congrats to My Balls Ichiro on a strong Silver in yet another impressive season and congrats to McNamee’s Heroes on their 10th medal and second straight top-three finish. Thank you for keeping this league alive, I look forward to the 21st season!

    2023 Fantasy MVPs:
    Ronald Acuna Jr.: 149 R, 41 HR, 106 RBI, 73 SB, .337 (first 40/50, 40/60 & 40/70 season ever)
    Matt Olson: 127 R, 54 HR, 139 RBI, .283

  • Welcome to The Curse 2023

Welcome to the 20TH season of The Curse! The league has a long and storied history with intense rivalries and unbelievable drama over the years. This will be the fifth season of Rotisserie (changed in 2019) after 15 seasons of Head-to-Head. Unfortunately the current regime of idiots at Yahoo suddenly decided to remove the message board, one of the most basic & vital parts of a fantasy league, and haven’t reversed course or even responded despite a month of daily furious reaction on the message board they started about it (the irony!). As you all know, the message board has always been an integral part of the league as I rely on it for important communication (keepers, draft order) and recaps, it’s a very sad and unnecessary change. There are some significant rule changes this season, most notably a pitch clock and shift restrictions.

MONEY: Money returned in 2020 (first time since 2007). We increased from $15 to $20 last season ($180 pot to $240). See the welcome email for payment options since there’s no message board!
    2022 PAYOUTS:
    1st: $125
    2nd: $75
    3rd: $40

PRE-DRAFT RANKINGS: As I say every year, you should always rank players in case you miss any of the draft. Go to "Pre-Draft Rankings" under the Draft tab along the top of the page.

The draft is currently set for Sunday, March 19 at 10:30 am but as always if there are multiple conflicts we can adjust it, and we’re behind schedule. Opening Day is March 30.

New Yorkers held on in a razor-thin finish for their third straight Gold last season, finishing at 93 (their same total as the previous year) in another thrilling finish. They started the final three days at 95 with Im your Vladdy three behind at 92 but fell two pts due to tremendously tight battles in AVG & WHIP to lead them by just a point going into the final day (93-92). Im your Vladdy actually took back 1st place as New Yorkers lost another two pts during the final games to trail them 92-91 (around 5:00), but New Yorkers would climb back ahead of 2Shadez & Dingers in AVG late to get back to 93 for a dramatic one-point win. It was the closest finish in Roto by far as the previous closest was six pts last season (New Yorkers won by 23 in 2020 and McNamee’s Heroes won by seven in 2019). Meanwhile, McNamee’s Heroes rallied to take 3rd place after My Balls Ichiro led them by six pts to start the second-to-last day, gaining three that day while My Balls lost two to trail them by just a point going into the final day (84.5-83.5), and they’d gain another point to 84.5 while My Balls fell 1.5 to 83 to deny My Balls their third straight medal. It was a very impressive debut by Im your Vladdy who held 1st place from June 15 to September 12, with a double-digit lead many days including every day from July 8-29 (peaked at 15.5 on June 29). They peaked at 99 pts in July as no team cracked 100 pts. Like 2021 and unlike the first two seasons of Roto, it was a hard-fought battle for the top spot the whole way with no team with 100+ pts (five teams held 1st place). New Yorkers were led by MVP Aaron Judge (133 R, 62 HR, 131 RBI, 16 SB, .311) & Trea Turner (101 R, 21 HR, 100 RBI, 27 SB, .298) on offense but it was a struggle outside of them, while dealing with pitching injuries again as Jacob deGrom once again missed over half the season and fellow keeper Walker Buehler (Tommy John surgery) went down in June after struggling. 21-game winner Kyle Wright (180.1 IP, 174 K, 3.19/1.16) led their pitching pickups as they still managed to dominate W by 19 with 116 and once again take K (1,529) & ERA (3.11).

I look forward to another season with you all!

    Mike
