Commish Notes

  • The end of the season is near with only 3 games left to be played. There are several teams that have also hit the innings limit and I know I have hit innings limit on position players too. It looks like there is a 3 way fight for 5 place. Honey Nut, Can of Corn, and Slumpers are with 82 points of each other. Can of Corn and Slumpers are separated by 18 points.

The Vottoman empire is 73 points behind Big Chill for 2nd place. Big Chill has hitting spots open, but no innings and Vottoman Empire will run out of hitting positions and innings tomorrow.

Remember that we can keep 0-2 players for next year. The draft will be snake from last place picking first to first place picking 10th.

Please send me a message if you don't want to play next year. I'm assuming everyone will be back.

It was nice to have a real season without Covid this year. I think next year will be interesting with the new baseball rules. My guess is that steals will go up.

  • Everyone, I know it has been a while since I posted a note. I guess preparing for all my teams in fantasy football took a lot of time. They all seem to have different scoring and roster positions, so it took some preparation.

The baseball season is coming to a close. It looks like there are still a few races left in our league. Vottoman Empire against Bill Chill for 2nd, Texas Leaguers and Honey Nut for 4th and Slumpers vs Can a Corn for 6th. Of course strange things can happen any day and things can change.

If you pull standings all time you will see how the teams have placed all the way back to 2005. If you had a baby when we started they would be getting out of high school now. Crystal Meth Tweekers won for 7 straight years from 2012 to 2018. They also won in 2009 under the team name of Giant Hairy Beanbags. This will be the 9th time they will win.

Point totals: Pitching 42,800 to hitting 55,666 for a total of 98,466 points.
Pitching totals sorted by pts per inning
Rank Team Name Pitching totals Pts per inning
    1 CrystalMeth Tweakers 5,017 3.927
    3 The Vottoman Empire 4,846 3.716
    2 The Big Chill 4,825 3.583
    4 Texas Leaguers 4,609 3.560
    6 The Slumpers 4,297 3.421
    5 Honey Nut Ichiros 4,122 3.355
    7 Can a Corn 4,217 3.338
    8 TeddyBallGame 4,042 3.045
    10 Angels in the Outfield 3,506 2.707
    9 Bomb Squad 3,323 2.534

You can see that Tweakers have a .211 advantage over the 2nd place team, while Vottoman Empire has a .133 advantage or Big Chill. The points per inning are pretty close for teams 3-7.
    Hitting totals:
    Rank Team Name Hitting Totals
    5 Honey Nut Ichiros 5979
    1 CrystalMeth Tweakers 5747
    2 The Big Chill 5746
    3 The Vottoman Empire 5660
    4 Texas Leaguers 5647
    9 Bomb Squad 5617
    6 The Slumpers 5451
    7 Can a Corn 5425
10 Angels in the Outfield 5325
    8 TeddyBallGame 5069
Honey nut had the best hitting team with over 200 points difference. Tweekers and Big Chill are real close at 2 and 3. Then 4-6 are very close.

I hope everyone has enjoyed the season so far. I will probably send one more wrap up note at the end of the year. Remember we can keep 0-2 keepers next year, so you may want to start thinking who you would keep. First round will be in reverse order of finish, while 2nd round will be order of finish.

  • Here is a summary of hitting and pitching stats. I checked my posts from 5/8, 6/5, 7/6, and today and pitching as a % of total points were as follows: 29.4, 43.2, 42.6, and 43.2. It looks like the first month pitchers were being stretched out and not hitting 5 or 6 innings for wins or quality starts. After they were stretched out, it appears pitching accounts for around 43% of the scoring. I have posted hitting and pitching totals below. You can check past posts to see if you are improving or not.

  • We are now ½ way through the season. Pitching and hitting totals have remained about the same (42.5% to 57.5%. Big Chill still have a lead and the best pitching staff by points per inning. The next 3 teams (Vottoman Empire, Crystal Meth Tweekers, and Honey Nut) are pretty close. Honey Nut would probably jump to 2nd once they catch up on innings pitched. Below are the pitching and hitting totals. You can compare your totals to the previous 2 other posts to see if you are improving. I have included your current ranking overall in each post.

Pitching totals and points per inning:
Rank Team Name Pitching totals Pts per inning
    1 The Big Chill 2794 3.760
    3 CrystalMeth Tweakers 2708 3.713
    2 The Vottoman Empire 2690.5 3.706
    4 Honey Nut Ichiros 2390.5 3.566
    5 Texas Leaguers 2483.5 3.413
    6 The Slumpers 2202 3.288
    9 Can a Corn 2024 3.044
    8 TeddyBallGame 1985 2.692
    7 Bomb Squad 1784.5 2.554
    10 Cubs 1672.5 2.388

We have 3 teams around 3.7. Cubs needed to improve their pitching, which is probably why they just made the trade.

    Hitting totals:
    Rank Team Name Hitting Totals
    4 Honey Nut Ichiros 3298
    7 Bomb Squad 3231
    10 Cubs 3124

    8 TeddyBallGame 3005
    6 The Slumpers 2966
    5 Texas Leaguers 2952
    9 Can a Corn 2872

The top 3 teams have separated themselves by a little bit.

  • Most of you probably know this already, but you can compare your scores to a particular team in the full standings page. If you scroll over a number on the distance from competition graph, it will highlight the score in red in all categories and tell you the team name at top of graph. You can get an idea on which categories teams are strongest in.
I will probably pull pitching and hitting totals this week. It appears it has been a month. I had a luck day today, if with not starting one of my pitchers that won.
I hope everyone is having a happy fourth of July weekend.
    Jul 3 4:13 PM
  • We are now 1/3 of the way through the season. We are currently broken into 3 tiers: Big Chill, the next 4 teams about 250 back, and the remaining 5 teams around 650 back. We all know that players can get hurt or get on a hot streak, so things can change. I know my pitching has currently been on a cold streak. I have posted similar numbers to 4 weeks ago, so you can compare which teams are moving as far as hitting and pitching.
Hitting increased 1% to 57% compared to pitching from a month ago. 19,895 to 15,128.
Pitching totals and points per inning:
    The Big Chill 1906 3.747
    Honey Nut Ichiros 1619.5 3.732
    Texas Leaguers 1725 3.637
    CrystalMeth Tweakers 1779 3.582
    The Vottoman Empire 1732 3.535
    Can a Corn 1388 3.179
    The Slumpers 1396 3.149
    TeddyBallGame 1325 2.620
    Cubs 1128.5 2.580
    Bomb Squad 1129 2.370

Big Chill and Honey Nut have a bit of lead followed by next three teams around 3.58, 2 teams at 3.1, and then remaining 3 teams. Right now we have 4 teams (Bomb, Slumpers, Can of Corn, Honey Nut) that may not reach the innings max, but they have plenty of time to make some moves.

    Hitting totals:
    Bomb Squad 2187
    Cubs 2144
    Honey Nut Ichiros 2034
    The Big Chill 2026
    TeddyBallGame 1971
    Texas Leaguers 1958
    The Vottoman Empire 1941
    CrystalMeth Tweakers 1926
    The Slumpers 1917
    Can a Corn 1791

The bomb Squad and Cubs have separated themselves followed by the next 2 teams in 2000’s, followed by next 5 teams in the 1900’s.

  • I shared total points by hitters and pitchers a couple of weeks ago. This time I thought I would do something a little different. I was wondering how much an impact the first 4 rounds of the draft impacted a team's totals. This would just be 2 rounds for the people that kept 2 keepers. The results were not what I expected. I know a few keepers will perform more to norms by later in the year, but below are the totals for now.
    1. Cubs 833
    2. Teddy 807
    3. Chill 747.5
    4. Crystal 735
    5. Honey 723
    6. Bomb 543
    7. Vottoman 516
    8. Texas 514
    9. Slumpers 512
    10. Can 501

The Cubs and TeddyBallGame are in the first tier of total points with both being over 800. They hit it out of the park with the first 4 rounds. They are currently in 8th and 10th, so they must have issues with the rest of their team.

There are then 3 teams that are between 748 to 723. They are sitting in first, 3rd, and 4th.

The bottom 5 teams are all between 501 to 543. 4 of these teams have had significant injuries and one of the players has not played that much. Vottoman has deGrom who was injured after keeper date. Can has Acuna who just came back. He will probably be a keeper next year. Texas has Teoscar Hernandez. Bombers have Fernando Tatis. The Slumpers have all pitchers, who tend to score a little less than hitters. If you use Variable Base Scoring instead of total points, than quality pitchers do make a difference.

I'll go back to totals by hitters and pitchers in a couple weeks and maybe provide totals for first 4 rounds in a month.

Hopefully we mount a comeback and Big Chill does not run away with the league. He does have a lead in innings pitched, so maybe we can catch them when we catch up on innings.
    May 22 5:27 PM
  • Congratulations to Big Chill on their 171 day. I'm not sure if it is the highest for the season, but I wouldn't doubt it.

I did my first break down of hitting and pitching for the season. It looks like removing negative points for strikeouts for hitters has made hitting a higher balance of points. So far the league has received 9,879 hitting points to 7,847 pitching points (56%/44%).

The hitting totals per team are pretty close:
    Cubs 1125
    The Big Chill 1116
    Bomb Squad 1116
    Honey Nut Ichiros 998
    The Vottoman Empire 990
    Texas Leaguers 977
    The Slumpers 952
    CrystalMeth Tweakers 907
    Can a Corn 884
    TeddyBallGame 814

The points per inning have a big range. I also included pitching totals, since some teams may not reach the innings limit. The Slumpers have the highest point per inning, but they are a little behind on the pace to reach max innings. The top 6 teams per point per inning are pretty close (3.9 to 3.5).

Team Pitching totals Pts per inning
    The Slumpers 790 3.873
    The Vottoman Empire 954.5 3.849
    Texas Leaguers 955 3.790
    The Big Chill 951.5 3.698
    Honey Nut Ichiros 785.5 3.637
    Can a Corn 842.5 3.515
    CrystalMeth Tweakers 754 2.980
    Bomb Squad 727 2.747
    TeddyBallGame 618 2.683
    Cubs 468.5 2.386

You can compare totals and maybe fine a trade partner if you need more innings or to balance out your team.

A few teams didn't respond to Yahoo Plus question.
    May 8 5:38 PM
  • We are now about 14% through the season and we have a long way to go.

4 of the 5 teams that have thrown the most innings are in the top 4. As other teams catch up on innings pitched, they will move up the standings (if they can find quality pitching). Cubs (136), Slumpers (155), and Honey Nut (171) are falling behind the inning pace.

There are several key players that are currently injured and will make a difference if they make it back. Can of Corn welcomed back one of the best hitters in Acuna this week. He should definitely make a difference. Some of the other key injured players: deGrom, Castillo, Tatis, Lance Lynn, Strasburg, Pressly, Altuve, Flaherty, and Hernandez.

I know I have trouble letting go of anyone I invested a top 15 pick in. I was curious as to what round the players that were claimed of waivers were drafted in. Merrifield 5th round 45 overall, Martinez 6th round 56 overall, Alonso 8th round 76 overall, Baez 10th 96, Mahle 11th 108, and Bell 14th 136. The other 2 claimed off waivers I don't think they were drafted.
    May 1 3:21 PM
  • Waivers and trade values:

Since we had a lot of waiver claims in the last few days, I wanted to point out that you can see who made a claim and who won at recent transactions, waiver offers and then view all. There have been a total of 8 players claimed off waivers. Baez, Bell, Megill, and Robertson had 2 teams try to claim them. Mahle and Martinez 3 teams tried to claim them. Merrifield had 4 teams and Pete Alsonso had 7 teams.

Here is a link with current trade values at CBS sports (at bottom). There point system is different than ours, so it is only a reference point: https://www.cbssports.com/fantasy/baseball/news/fantasy-baseball-week-4-trade-values-for-rotisserie-and-h2h-and-how-to-handle-injury-risks-like-zac-gallen/?ftag=SNL-04-10aaa0e&ET_CID=198797&ET_RID=3006932
    May 1 6:41 AM
  • We have finished the first week of the season or around 10 games. You can tell that it was an abbreviated spring training, especially the pitching. There are several pitchers that are not making the 5 innings for a win or 6 for a quality start. Hopefully that changes by the end of April.

There have be several transactions as managers receive more information on the players, which is another issue with short spring training (very little info).

The brand new manager, Can of Corn, has started off fast and is in 2nd place. The Texas Leaguers have been on top for the last few days.

All teams are still bunched up and all it takes is a day with 3-4 wins with quality starts to jump all the way into first.
    Apr 18 3:08 PM
  • It is nice to actually witness real games again.

The upside to holding the draft so late was that we were able to catch some injury and trade news before our draft. The downside is that we had to wait until today to pick players up. I know I had 3 people that I had to move to IL and I could not replace until today. I think next year I may try to have keepers 2 weeks out and draft one week out (maybe 10 and 5 days).

We already have had 23 transactions. I believe most of them are replacements for people on IR. I know I was hoping for some people to be dropped as teams were balanced. It is not the case yet. We increased number of transactions to 150 this year. I think this rule mainly applies to the Cubs, who have already made 5 moves. Of course, I also made 5 moves, so he is not the only one.

If you have time you may want to check out the all time standings on the home page. It goes back to 2005. You can see where you placed each year. If you click on the team, you can see the owner. Some of the team names have changed throughout the years.
    Apr 9 9:31 AM
  • One week left before the draft. Hopefully everyone is close to setting their draft order. Looking forward to the season.
    Mar 30 6:45 PM
  • I have set the keepers, so everyone should know who is available in the draft. Can a Corn and Cubs will each have 2 of the first 4 picks, since they had no keepers. Everyone else chose to keep 2 players.

The Can of Corn pointed out that Yahoo did not automatically change start and end date of season, so I made that change too.

We should be good to go for the draft.

I'm looking forward to the season.
    Mar 23 7:38 AM
  • This is the last reminder that the keeper date is 11:59 PT on 3/22. I should be able to update the draft board by the time everyone gets home from work on 3/23. This should give everyone 2 weeks to prepare for the draft.
    Mar 20 7:00 AM
  • I have changed the draft to Wednesday, April 6, at 7:30 p.m. CST. My guess is that the season will not have started by then. If it does, I'll find an earlier time. Please review your calendars and post if the time does not work for you.

I have kept the keeper date. Please go ahead and select keepers if you know who you will keep. You can always change before 3/23 if needed.

I have set draft order. We will know more information after 3/23 once I can assign up to 2 keepers per team.

Hopefully we will get some baseball in this year.
    Mar 7 10:23 AM
  • Everyone, I pushed back the keeper date to 3/23 due to the delay of the start of the season. I still have kept the draft on 3/29, but I will push it back once we have a better idea on the start of the season. I know one manager has a conflict.

Please go ahead and choose your keepers. You can always change your picks before the deadline. If you fail to choose keepers, you will keep your first 2 picks.

I will also adjust total innings once we know how many games they will play. It does not look good right now. I'm starting to think we may lose a month of the season.
    Mar 2 8:54 AM
  • Everyone, Slumpers cannot do the current draft date and time, so I will be adjusting it. I heard the season will be pushed back if they don't have an agreement by Monday. I'm starting to think instead of a week of games being missed, it may be more like a month. Anyway, I'll probably change date and time on Tuesday of next week.

Also, I just published the league, so hopefully we will get one more team. Again, if anyone has a friend that wants to play, I believe I gave you authority to send an invitation or you can send me their email address.
    Feb 24 8:50 AM
  • Everyone,

I re-instated the .5 points per outs for pitchers. It does make a big difference on players. It does make starting pitching more valuable along with pitchers that do stay late into games.
    Jan 29 4:34 PM
  • Everyone,

I have renewed the league and made the changes we agreed on last year. The only other change I made was to remove outs for pitchers. Most of us use all innings, so number of outs really did not make a difference.

It looks like hitters have a lot more value this year. Removing -1 for strikeouts increased their value.

We do need to find one more team. I believe you can invite directly if you know someone. If not, you can send me their email and I will invite.

I still think the season will be delayed a little bit while they argue over money. I will adjust keeper and draft dates if the season is delayed.

If you don't want to play, please let me know or remove yourself from the league.
