  • Ballers! Another fun season! Thanks to all of you for your active participation & planning for the future in our esteemed Keeper league. So many great performances & finishes:

    1st Place: Chico:! This is Chico’s FIFTH Moneyball championship! Back in the saddle after a one season sabbatical, so that’s 5 out of 6. Yowza. It’s also his 6th straight in the Top 3, 7th straight in the Top 5, and 8th straight in the Top 10. Chico, you are a gentleman, an inspiration, and the crown jewel amongst Moneyball jewels. (For now.) Congratulations!!

    Moneyball Trivia Interlude: Chico, Chubby, and one other manager are the only to be crowed champ more than once. Who is the the 3rd? That’s right………

    ………Bingsus! In 2006 and 2010.

    2nd Place: Barreleyes! I crashed the Top 3 party this season, bumping out the defending champ Squirrels after his two straight seasons there w/ Chico & Cotter. This was my third silver medal, though one of those predated the Moneyball modern era, so really only my second —and was my first Top 3 finish since I finished 2nd in, wait for it, 2008! This was my 6th Top 5, and fourth out of the last five seasons. And, as noted last week, my 686 pt defeat was the closest anyone has come to Chico in his five championship seasons—no-one had finished within 1,000. Dare I say the Eyes are legit Moneyball elite on the verge of his first title?

    3rd Place: Cotter!! By my count, this is Cotter’s TENTH Top 5 finish. Nobody aside from the late Chubby can say that. I mean, say no more, right?! True Moneyball Elite. Congrats, Cotter! But can he break on through to the other side & win it all?!?

    4th Place: Maddon! Bravo!!! While we all try, not many burst through the IP max as Maddon did, helping him to nudge out DeGro for 4th. After a few years of abject mediocrity at best, Maddon returns to his first Top 10 since 2017, first Top 5 since 2016, and his SIXTH Top 5 in his illustrious Moneyball career. Another year or two in the Top 5 within the next few years, and we'll have to consider Maddon elite.

    Degroman: The Empire strikes back! After snoozing for 7 years, Degro returned to the top 10 last season for the first time since 2012, and 2021 sees his first Top 5 since 2012! He was narrowly edged out last season in the final week by Hippies, but he wasn’t to be denied this year, despite his namesake’s shelving. Congrats, DeGro!

    Other notables:

    * The mercurial Ethan Feld returns to the Top 10 for the first time since 2018, missing out on the Top 5 after spending much of the season there. Is this the beginning of another Ethan run? He’s had many throughout his Moneyball career!
    * I believe Gladden is the first Baller to finish in the Top 10 in each of his first two seasons since Maddon did it in 2009 and 2010.
    * Yakety’s meteoric finish landed him his first Top 10 in 5 years, pushing Gladden to the final day. Active Yakety, indeed! A contender to stay?
    * Fourth straight Top 10 for Hippies! Just when the commish counted him out, he rose! (Though I didn’t get the order correct, Hippies was the only Top 10er I left out of my 9/3 prediction. I shall not bet against him again!)
    * 3rd straight Top 10 for Munerori, w/ Rafael Devers’s 9th inning HR putting both the Red Sox & him over the top. Great finish!
