    • Blows save chance
Beeks allowed one earned run on two hits and a walk to blow the save Wednesday against the Athletics.

Advice: Beeks was tasked with protecting a one-run lead and retired two of the first three batters he faced. However, he went on to allow the next two hitters to reach base, blowing his first save since taking over as the Rockies' closer. Beeks has allowed only two earned runs in seven innings since stepping into ninth-inning duties, but his 1.57 WHIP and 6:4 K:BB in that span are more indicative of his future success. • Still on track for Monday return
Lodolo (groin) threw a successful extended bullpen session Wednesday and is set to throw off the mound again Saturday, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Advice: Assuming he comes out of Saturday's session without any hiccups, Lodolo will be set to rejoin the Reds' rotation Monday against the Cardinals, which is the first day he's eligible for activation from the 15-day injured list. The left-hander is working his way back from a left groin strain. Rotowire.com 14 minutes ago

    • Completes four innings
Baz (elbow) allowed one earned run on three hits and three walks while striking out four across four innings during a rehab start with Triple-A Durham on Wednesday.

Advice: This was Baz's best rehab appearance since starting the assignment May 4. He's still fighting his control, as he has walked 11 batters across 12 innings, though that shouldn't come as a significant surprise given his lengthy layoff since last pitching in a meaningful game. The Rays will likely want him to make at least one more start in the minors, but he could rejoin the big-league rotation in early June. Rotowire.com 42 minutes ago

    • Recalled ahead of Thursday's start
Atlanta recalled Smith-Shawver from Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday.

Advice: Manager Brian Snitker previously confirmed after Wednesday's 9-2 win that Smith-Shawver would start Thursday's game against the Cubs at Wrigley Field. The young right-hander holds a 6.10 ERA and 1.52 WHIP this season with Gwinnett and has posted a 7.43 ERA and allowed six home runs over his last three starts. Given those results, fantasy managers would be wise to take a wait-and-see approach with Smith-Shawver, but the 21-year-old should have an opportunity to make additional starts for Atlanta if he pitches well Thursday. • Not starting Thursday
Black won't start Thursday's contest against the Pirates.

Advice: After being recalled from Triple-A Sacramento last Friday and making a three-inning start later that day, Black was slated to make his second straight turn through the rotation Thursday. He could still end up pitching in the series finale in Pittsburgh, but if he does, he'll be deployed as a bulk reliever out of the bullpen behind Erik Miller, who will open the game but will likely only cover an inning or two. Black has struggled in his three starts for the Giants this season, allowing 10 earned runs with an 8:5 K:BB over 11.2 frames. Rotowire.com Today, 6:51 am
    • Drawing start Thursday
Cubs manager Craig Counsell said that Brown will start Thursday's game against Atlanta at Wrigley Field, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Brown will pick up his fifth start of the season, filling the spot in the rotation that belonged to Kyle Hendricks before the veteran right-hander was moved to the bullpen earlier this week. Because he hasn't started since May 2 and will be pitching on three days' rest after covering two frames in relief Sunday, Brown may not be asked to give the Cubs more than three or four innings as he re-enters the rotation. Hendricks hasn't been used since his last start Friday and could be called upon to piggyback Brown, but Counsell hasn't outlined his plans for when Brown exits the contest. Brown may not be in line for a lengthy stay in the rotation, as the Cubs could get Jordan Wicks (forearm) back from the injured list next week to take over as their No. 5 starter. • Takes second loss
Glasnow (6-2) was tagged with the loss against the Arizona on Wednesday, allowing three runs on four hits and one walk while striking out six over five innings.

Advice: Glasnow cruised through the first four innings before allowing three consecutive batters to reach base with one out in the fifth, eventually leading to three runs coming across for Arizona. He would make it through the frame but didn't return for the sixth, marking the second straight start in which he's been unable to make it through at least six innings. The right-hander is now 1-2 in May after going 5-1 in his first six decisions to open the campaign. However, he still sports a healthy 34:5 K:BB through four starts this month. • Red Sox promote RHP prospect Perales to AA
Red Sox promoted starting pitching prospect Luis Perales to Double-A Portland.

Advice: Depending on the scouting service, Perales is either ranked as the best or second-best pitching prospect in Boston’s system and one of their top 10 overall prospects. The 21-year-old had a 3.42 ERA across 26 1/3 innings (seven starts) with 46 strikeouts and just 10 walks. He will now try to keep up that strikeout rate at a higher level, but the 6'1" starter was one of the high-upside prospects who many thought would benefit from the Red Sox overhauling their pitching development system. • Silences Dodgers over five frames
Nelson (3-3) earned the win Wednesday, shutting out the Dodgers over five innings while allowing five hits and three walks. He struck out five.

Advice: Nelson didn't draw the start but relieved Brandon Hughes with just two outs in the first inning before pitching all the way into the sixth. The right-hander struck out three of the first five batters he faced and induced 10 whiffs on the night, while also working his way out of multiple jams against a lethal Dodgers lineup. It was a great bounceback effort for Nelson after allowing a season-high eight runs in his previous outing. He's now won three of his last four decisions (spanning six outings).
