    • Set for season debut Sunday
Scherzer (back/thumb) said Saturday that he'll return from the 60-day injured list to start in Sunday's series finale against the Royals, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Advice: After completing his recovery from offseason back surgery in addition to moving past the thumb and forearm injuries that slowed down his rehab process, Scherzer was originally scheduled to make his 2024 debut Saturday. The Rangers ultimately elected to push Scherzer back another day, with manager Bruce Bochy opting to go with Jon Gray for the second game of the series. With Scherzer set to take the mound Sunday, Dane Dunning will be pushed back to start in Monday's series opener against the Brewers. After being acquired from the Mets ahead of the trade deadline last season, Scherzer went 4-2 over eight regular-season starts with the Rangers, posting a 3.20 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 53:15 K:BB in 45 innings. • Max Scherzer not starting for Rangers on Saturday
Rangers’ manager Bruce Bochy announced Friday that Jon Gray will start on Saturday against the Royals.

Advice: There had been speculation that Max Scherzer would make his 2024 season debut on Saturday, but it’ll be Gray getting the ball instead. Bochy was quick to point out that Scherzer has not had any sort of setback and could still return to start Sunday’s series finale against the Royals. Stay tuned. Rotoworld Yesterday, 2:33 pm

    • Justin Verlander (neck) has yet to resume throwing
Astros’ manager Joe Espada told reporters on Friday that right-hander Justin Verlander (neck) has yet to resume throwing.

Advice: There had been hope that he would resume throwing earlier in the week, but it’s taking much longer than expected for his neck discomfort to dissipate. At this point, there’s no clear timetable for when the 41-year-old hurler will be able to rejoin the Astros’ rotation. Rotoworld Yesterday, 2:18 pm

    • Return pushed back
Scherzer (back/thumb) won't start Saturday's game against the Royals, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Scherzer was initially expected to make his 2024 debut Saturday after undergoing offseason back surgery and more recently dealing with thumb and forearm injuries. Instead, Bruce Bochy will hand the ball to Jon Gray on Saturday, with starters for Sunday's series finale against Kansas City and Monday's series opener against Milwaukee still to be determined. Scherzer and Dane Dunning figure to fill the two starting slots, though it's unclear in what order. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 2:17 pm

    • Continues impressive stretch
Brown (4-5) earned the win against the White Sox on Wednesday, allowing one run on seven hits and no walks while striking out six batters over six innings.

Advice: The only run scored against Brown came on an Andrew Benintendi solo homer in the fourth inning. Otherwise, Brown was solid again -- all six of Chicago's other hits were singles, and the right-handed hurler didn't issue any walks for the second straight outing. Brown had an awful 9.78 ERA through 23 innings across his first six starts this season, but he's since lowered that mark to 4.72. He's been especially impressive of late, racking up six straight quality starts and limiting his opponents to one run over 19 frames while posting a 22:4 K:BB across his past three outings. • Secures 15th save
Megill struck out one in a perfect inning to earn the save in Wednesday's 2-0 win over the Angels.

Advice: Megill needed just seven pitches (six strikes) against the middle of the Angels' order to close out this contest. He's pitched four of the last five days, but he's thrown just 12 pitches over his last two outings. He's now 15-for-16 in save chances with a 2.01 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 27:7 K:BB through 22.1 innings this season. If Megill is unavailable for Thursday's series opener versus the Padres due to his recent workload, a potential save chance would likely go to Joel Payamps or Hoby Milner. • Trevor Megill secures 15th save vs. Angels
Trevor Megill struck out one batter in a perfect ninth inning to record the save against the Angels on Wednesday.

Advice: Megill was summoned with a two-run lead in the ninth to close it out against the Angels. He made quick work of Los Angeles, needing only seven pitches to put them away with one strikeout for his 15th save of the season. Rotoworld Wednesday, 9:05 pm

    • Hunter Brown holds White Sox to one run in win
Hunter Brown held the White Sox to one run with six strikeouts over six innings to earn the win on Wednesday.

Advice: Brown has been fantastic over his last several starts. The only run he allowed Wednesday came on a solo homer by Andrew Benintendi in the fourth inning. It was the only run he’s allowed over his last three outings. Brown scattered six other hits while striking out six batters to zero walks. The 25-year-old right-hander will take a 4.72 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, and an 82/29 K/BB ratio across 74 1/3 innings into a start against the Rockies in Houston on Tuesday. • Collects 18th save
Suarez struck out one in a perfect ninth inning Wednesday to record his 18th save of the season in a 5-2 win over the Phillies.

Advice: One day after blowing his first save chance of the season, Suarez was back in his usual form, firing nine of 13 pitches for strikes as he shut down the Phillies' 6-7-8 hitters. The 33-year-old right-hander came into 2024 with only one career save, but he's having a breakout campaign as the Padres' closer, posting a 1.17 ERA, 0.78 WHIP and 29:6 K:BB through 30.2 innings.
