    • Takes big step in recovery
Cole (elbow) threw 15 pitches off a mound Saturday, Max Goodman of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.

Advice: This was Cole's first bullpen session since he was shut down from throwing in mid-March, thus it was a significant milestone as the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner works his way back to the Yankees rotation. Per Goodman, Cole was "giddy" after throwing Saturday, so it appears the session went well. The veteran right-hander is eligible to come off the IL near the end of this month, but recent reports suggest that mid-June may be a more realistic target. Rotowire.com Today, 10:34 am

    • Cole (elbow) throws 15 pitches in bullpen session
Gerrit Cole (elbow) threw 15 pitches in a bullpen session Saturday.

Advice: It’s the first session for Cole since March when the right-hander was shut down with nerve inflammation in his right elbow. The next step is likely another session in the pen for the 33-year-old, but it’s a positive sign with Cole reportedly “giddy” over how things went. The hope is that he can return to the mound in the middle of June. So far, so good. Rotoworld Today, 8:21 am

    • Returns to action
      Encarnacion-Strand went 0-for-3 in Friday's 3-0 loss to Baltimore.

Advice: Encarnacion-Strand missed the last four games with a hand injury. His first full season in the majors has gotten off to a rocky start: the first baseman is slashing .190/.216/.305 over 111 plate appearances. His strikeout rate is nearly identical to what it was in 2023, but the walk rate is about half of what it was last year and Encarnacion-Strand is in the fifth percentile in chase percentage. • Notches third save
Hader issued a walk over one scoreless frame Friday. He struck out two and earned a save over the Mariners.

Advice: Hader needed 22 pitches (13 strikes) to finish off the 5-3 win but still came away with his third save as an Astro. It was his first save since April 19 and he's converted three of his four opportunities so far. He's produced an impressive 23:7 K:BB despite an unsightly 5.93 ERA through 13.2 frames. Hader has punched out seven batters while not allowing an earned run over his last four innings. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 8:44 pm

    • Josh Hader locks down third save of season
Josh Hader fired a scoreless ninth with two strikeouts to pick up a save Friday against the Mariners.

Advice: Hader did walk a batter to put the tying run at the plate, but the left-hander was able to get a pair of strikeouts to lower his ERA to 5.93 and also pick up his third save. Hader should continue to see those save numbers rise while his ERA plummets over the summer months. Rotoworld Yesterday, 8:05 pm

    • Bobby Miller (shoulder) throws bullpen on Friday
Bobby Miller (shoulder) threw a successful bullpen session on Friday.

Advice: The 25-year-old hurler will likely repeat the process another time or two before facing live hitters, but he’s trending in the right direction. Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts noted that Miller should be able to ramp up quickly once he’s ready to face live hitters, so take that for what it’s worth. Rotoworld Yesterday, 5:11 pm

    • Throws off mound
Miller (shoulder) threw a bullpen session Friday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.

Advice: Miller has been on the injured list since April 13 due to inflammation in his right shoulder, and Friday marked his first time throwing off a mound since then. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said he isn't sure how many more bullpen sessions Miller will need to throw before he progresses to facing live hitters, so the 25-year-old righty will likely remain without a clear return timeline until he gets to that point. • Back in action Friday
Encarnacion-Strand (hand) will start at first base and bat fifth in Friday's game versus the Orioles.

Advice: Encarnacion-Strand missed four starts due to lingering left hand soreness following a hit-by-pitch over the weekend, but he's ready to go now. The 24-year-old has slashed a disappointing .196/.222/.314 with a 28.7 percent strikeout rate in 25 contests with the Reds this season. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 11:08 am
    • Likely to return Friday
Encarnacion-Strand (hand) and teammate Tyler Stephenson are expected to return Friday when the Reds host the Orioles, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Advice: The Reds' bats went quiet on their 2-4 road trip against the Rangers and Padres, hitting .201 as a team while averaging 10 strikeouts per game on the trip. Of course, Encarnacion-Strand has been struggling this year in both aspects, hitting .196 with a troubling 3:31 BB:K ratio in 108 plate appearances. Perhaps with better health and better weather he will come close to displaying the form he showed in 2023, when he hit .270/.328/.477 in 241 plate appearances at the big-league level.
