    • Michael Conforto blasts two-run homer in win
Michael Conforto went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer against the Cubs on Wednesday.

Advice: With a runner on base in the second inning, Conforto took Hayden Wesneski deep to right center field for a two-run shot to put the Giants on the board. It was Conforto’s ninth homer of the season and only his second in June. The 31-year-old outfielder is slashing .232/.286/.415 with 23 runs scored and 29 RBI across 224 plate appearances. • Decent in loss
Elder (1-3) allowed two runs on four hits and struck out four without walking a batter over six innings, but he took the loss in Game 2 of Wednesday's doubleheader versus the Cardinals.

Advice: Elder turned in his second quality start of the season while stepping in for a spot start. This was his first big-league outing since May 19, but it's expected he'll return to Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday after being appointed the 27th man for Wednesday's twin bill. He has a 5.76 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and 23:11 K:BB over 29.2 innings across six starts in the majors this season. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 7:42 pm

    • Bryce Elder tosses quality start in loss to Cards
Bryce Elder allowed two runs with four strikeouts across six innings in a loss against the Cardinals on Wednesday.

Advice: Elder had worked through two clean innings and recorded the first two outs in the third before the Cardinals stringed together three straight hits to bring two runs in to score. He settled in for three more scoreless frames, ending with four strikeouts in a quality start. The 25-year-old right-hander holds a 5.76 ERA, 1.69 WHIP, and a 23/11 K/BB ratio across 29 2/3 innings. • Called up for Game 2 start
Atlanta appointed Elder as the 27th man for Wednesday's doubleheader, and he'll start Game 2 against the Cardinals.

Advice: The right-hander was previously announced as the starter for Wednesday's nightcap, and he's now officially been added to the roster. Elder has struggled in his five starts for Atlanta this season with a 6.46 ERA, 1.94 WHIP and 19:11 K:BB across 23.2 innings. He'll likely be sent back to Triple-A Gwinnett following the contest. • Trent Thornton bails out Andrés Muñoz against Rays
Trent Thornton tossed a perfect ninth inning on Wednesday against the Rays to record his first career save.

Advice: Thornton was brought on to guard a four-run lead with the bases loaded in the final frame after Andrés Muñoz issued a pair of walks and also hit a batter to open the ninth inning. It technically qualified as a save situation since the tying run was in the on-deck circle. He got Richie Palacios to ground into a fielder’s choice before coaxing a game-ending double play from ensuing batter Amed Rosario to put out the fire and preserve the win. • George Kirby flummoxes Rays over six frames in win
George Kirby struck out seven and allowed one run over six innings on Wednesday in a win over the Rays.

Advice: Kirby coughed up an early run-scoring single to Yandy Díaz, but managed to keep Tampa Bay’s lineup quiet from the third inning onwards to net his seventh win of the season. He induced 13 swinging strikes, including six on his four-seam fastball, and finished with a pedestrian 28 percent CSW. Of course, he also didn’t hand out a free pass in this one. It wasn’t his most dominant effort of the season, but was more than enough to lead Seattle to a much-needed win. The 26-year-old righty has allowed two earned runs or fewer in six consecutive starts dating back to May 29. He’ll carry a strong 3.35 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 96/9 K/BB ratio across 99 1/3 innings (17 starts) into a tough come outing on Wednesday against the Orioles. Rotoworld Yesterday, 1:21 pm
    • Sharp in seventh win
Kirby (7-5) allowed one run on four hits while striking out seven over six innings to earn the win Wednesday over the Rays.

Advice: Kirby had his way with the Rays on Wednesday as he managed to get through six innings for his third win in his last five starts. Kirby has been on a tear, allowing two runs or less in six consecutive starts, posting a 1.70 ERA with three walks and 40 strikeouts in that span. He has the third best ERA in MLB since May and he'll look to keep it going in a tough matchup vs. the Orioles next week. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 12:13 pm
    • Chris Roycroft joins Cardinals as 27th man
Chris Roycroft will serve as the Cardinals’ 27th man in the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader against the Braves.

Advice: Roycroft has a 3.07 ERA in 12 relief appearances for the Cardinals this season. There’s a good chance he’ll appear in Game 2 tonight, as the Cardinals aren’t expecting spot starter Matthew Liberatore to go deep. Rotoworld Yesterday, 10:21 am
    • Rangers select Derek Hill’s contract from Triple-A
Rangers selected the contract of OF Derek Hill from Triple-A Round Rock.

Advice: Hill’s first stint with the Rangers ended prematurely earlier this month because the team wanted to add an infielder due to Corey Seager being banged up. He’ll get another look as a reserve outfielder now. The former first-round pick was hitting .350/.415/.631 with eight homers and seven steals in 42 games for Round Rock. He was 2-for-9 in 2 1/2 weeks with the Rangers before being dropped June 7. Rotoworld Yesterday, 9:26 am
