    • Cubs designate Vinny Nittoli for assignment Friday
Cubs designated RHP Vinny Nittoli for assignment.

Advice: Interesting. Nittoli was just signed to a major league contract by the Cubs on Thursday, but he gets the boot from the 40-man roster before appearing in a single game with his new club. Perhaps they’re trying to sneak him through waivers to stash him at Triple-A, but given Nittoli’s 2.25 ERA with the A’s this season it seems unlikely that he’ll make it. Rotoworld Today, 2:18 pm
    • Placed on injured list
The Cubs placed Thompson on the 15-day injured list Friday with a right rib fracture, retroactive to Thursday, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Advice: Thompson has fired 5.1 scoreless innings since returning from Triple-A Iowa on June 16, but he'll now be sidelined for at least the next two weeks as a result of his injury. Ethan Roberts will come up from the minors to fill the vacancy in Chicago's bullpen. Rotowire.com Today, 2:16 pm
    • Cubs promote Jorge Lopez from Triple-A Iowa
Cubs selected the contract of RHP Jorge Lopez from Triple-A Iowa.

Advice: The 31-year-old hurler inked a minor league deal with the Cubs just two weeks ago, so it didn’t take him long to work his way into the big-league bullpen. Lopez has logged 26 1/3 innings at the big-league level this season, posting a 3.76 ERA and a 19/11 K/BB ratio. Vinny Nittoli was designated for assignment in a corresponding move on Friday. • Recalled by Arizona
The Diamondbacks recalled Castellanos from Triple-A Reno on Friday.

Advice: It'll be the second stint in the majors for Castellanos this season after his contract was selected by Arizona on June 6. The 28-year-old right-hander made one appearance for the big club June 7 against the Padres and was optioned back to the minors the next day. Castellanos has started in 11 games for Triple-A Reno this season, but he will likely serve out of Arizona's bullpen with right-hander Scott McGough being optioned to Reno in the corresponding move and ace Zac Gallen (hamstring) set to return from the injured list Saturday. • Cubs place Keegan Thompson (ribs) on 15-day IL
Cubs placed RHP Keegan Thompson on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to June 27, with a right rib fracture.

Advice: It’s unclear exactly when the injury occurred, but the last time that the 29-year-old hurler took the hill he worked a perfect inning against the Giants on Wednesday. No word yet on how long the Cubs expect him to be sidelined for. Ethan Roberts was recalled from Triple-A Iowa in a corresponding move on Friday to take his spot in the Cubs’ bullpen. • Sent to Reno
The Diamondbacks optioned McGough to Triple-A Reno on Friday.

Advice: Since being called up to Arizona on June 8, McGough has posted an 8.18 ERA and 1.64 WHIP across 11 innings while striking out 10 batters and walking eight. He'll now head back to Triple-A following his poor performance, and Humberto Castellanos will rejoin the D-backs as McGough's replacement. Rotowire.com Today, 2:10 pm

    • Next start set for Tuesday
Crawford's next start will come on Tuesday in Miami after his last outing was suspended by rain, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.

Advice: Crawford threw only 23 pitches over 1.1 scoreless innings Wednesday against the Blue Jays before inclement weather forced any early end to his night. Despite the righty's limited workload in that outing, the Red Sox have elected to give Crawford five days of rest before his next start. He's tentatively lined up for two starts next week, as a date with the Yankees looms next weekend. Rotowire.com Today, 1:59 pm
    • Links up with Baltimore
Smith signed a minor-league contract with the Orioles on Friday, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports.

Advice: The right-hander was released by the Marlins last week and didn't take long to latch on with a new organization. Smith posted a 4.25 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 23:9 K:BB over 29.2 innings for Miami this season, and he'll likely fill a low-leverage relief role if he gets called up by Baltimore. • Pirates activate Martin Pérez for Friday return
Pirates activated LHP Martin Pérez from the 15-day injured list.

Advice: The 33-year-old southpaw will return to the Pirates’ rotation on Friday night against the Braves. Prior to landing on the injured list at the end of May with a left groin strain, Pérez had registered an underwhelming 4.71 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and a 46/19 K/BB ratio across 57 1/3 innings through his first 11 starts. He’s certainly not a recommended streaming option against a powerful Braves’ offense in his first start back off the injured list. Rotoworld Today, 1:45 pm
