    • Max Scherzer targeting rehab outing next week
Max Scherzer (back, thumb) is likely to make a minor league rehab start next week.

Advice: Scherzer told reporters Thursday that his thumb is improving and he was able to resume playing catch without any issues. The hope is that he’ll be ready for a minor league outing at some point next week. Barring any further setbacks, he could return to Texas’ starting rotation mix by mid-May. • Continues power surge
Smith went 1-for-5 with a solo home run Wednesday in an 8-0 win over Arizona.

Advice: Smith hit one of two homers in the game for Los Angeles, taking Jordan Montgomery deep to left field for a fifth-inning solo shot. The All-Star catcher went deep just once over his first 23 games of the season but has picked up the power since, swatting three long balls over his past five contests. Smith has complemented his four homers on the campaign with a .355/.395/.555 slash line, 24 RBI and 18 runs over 124 plate appearances. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 10:28 am

    • Homers, extends hitting streak
Pages went 1-for-5 with a two-run homer in Wednesday's win over the Diamondbacks.

Advice: Pages kicked off a five-run second inning for the Dodgers with a two-run shot off Jordan Montgomery following a one-out walk from Enrique Hernandez. It was the rookie outfielder's third home run of the campaign, and he's now hit safely in eight consecutive games. Over that stretch he's batting .363 (12-for-33) with two homers, seven RBI and seven runs scored. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 7:16 am

    • Shaky in Wednesday's loss
Hancock (3-3) took the loss Wednesday, coughing up five runs (one earned) on five hits and four walks over 3.2 innings as the Mariners fell 5-2 to Atlanta. He struck out four.

Advice: The right-hander's own throwing error in the third inning led to the game's first run, while a Mitch Haniger misplay in the fourth set the stage for a four-run outburst by Atlanta. Hancock tossed 47 of 77 pitches for strikes before exiting as he failed to complete four innings for the second time in six starts. The 24-year-old has had his moments in the Seattle rotation, but he could be headed to the bullpen or the minors soon with Bryan Woo (elbow) closing in on his return. Hancock should get at least one more turn while Woo finishes getting stretched out and will take a 4.75 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 23:9 K:BB through 30.1 innings into his next outing, which could come early next week in Minnesota. • Another six shutout innings
Yamamoto (3-1) earned the win over the Diamondbacks on Wednesday, allowing five hits and two walks over six scoreless innings. He struck out five.

Advice: Yamamoto allowed the leadoff man to reach in back-to-back innings to open the contest but still managed to keep Arizona's lineup at bay over six frames. The right-hander has now hurled 12 scoreless innings over his last two starts and has won each of his last three decisions after imploding in his MLB debut. He's also logged three straight quality starts. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 6:01 am

    • Andy Pages slugs two-run homer in win Wednesday
Andy Pages went 1-for-5 with a two-run homer on Wednesday in an 8-0 win over the Diamondbacks.

Advice: Pages got the scoring started for the Dodgers in the second inning, blasting a towering two-run homer off Jordan Montgomery. The 23-year-old outfielder has impressed in his major league debut, hitting .291/.317/.545 with three homers, 12 runs scored, and 10 RBI across 60 plate appearances. There were questions regarding his hit tool, but he’s posted just a 21.7 percent strikeout rate, supporting his early production. Rotoworld Wednesday, 9:35 pm

    • Will Smith blasts solo homer in win over D-Backs
Will Smith went 1-for-5 with a solo homer on Wednesday against the Diamondbacks.

Advice: Smith’s only hit of the game left the yard on Wednesday as he took Jordan Montgomery deep for a solo shot to lead off the third inning. The 29-year-old backstop is up to four homers on the year while slashing an excellent .355/.395/.555 with 18 runs scored and 24 RBI across 124 plate appearances. Rotoworld Wednesday, 9:33 pm

    • Jackson Merrill goes hitless Wednesday in victory
Jackson Merrill went 0-for-4 with a strikeout on Wednesday in the Padres’ win over the Reds.

Advice: Don’t look now, but Merrill has gone 0-for-19 in six contests over the last week. The 21-year-old top prospect looked extremely impressive at the outset of the season in his Padres debut, but has hit a frosty stretch at the dish of late, which also coincides with a nagging groin issue that he’s been playing through. It’s entirely possible he’s not close to 100 percent at the moment, which is impacting his on-field results. Rotoworld Wednesday, 3:46 pm

    • Emerson Hancock gets quick hook in loss to Braves
Emerson Hancock was charged with five runs (one earned) on Wednesday in a loss to the Braves.

Advice: Hancock navigated a pair of scoreless frames before issuing a bases-loaded free pass in the third inning and allowing four additional unearned runs to cross the plate in the ensuing frame following a one-out fielding error by right fielder Mitch Haniger. He finished with four strikeouts and also walked three batters. It’s worth noting that Bryan Woo appears to be on the precipice of returning, which would likely ship him back to Triple-A Tacoma in the near future. For the moment, he’ll take the ball on Tuesday against the Twins at Target Field. Rotoworld Wednesday, 3:20 pm
