    • James McArthur closes out Angels to nab ninth save
      James McArthur served up a solo homer in the ninth inning on Sunday, but managed to escape with a two-run lead intact to secure his ninth save of the season.

      Advice: The 27-year-old right-hander allowed a one-out solo shot to Willie Calhoun but retired each of the other three hitters that he faced — needing just 11 pitches total (eight strikes) to navigate the ninth inning. On the season, he now holds a 4.42 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and an 18/3 K/BB ratio across 18 1/3 innings while converting nine of his first 12 save chances. Despite some recent struggles, Royals’ skipper Matt Quatraro seems committed to keeping McArthur in the closer’s role, which means he’ll continue to have mixed league fantasy value.       Advice: Schreiber collected his first save of the season and the 10th of his career. Royals closer James McArthur had worked back-to-back nights on Tuesday and Wednesday, so manager Matt Quatraro could have been giving him extra rest Friday night. However, McArthur also blew saves Sunday and Tuesday and has seen his ERA jump from 2.87 to 4.15 in the last week, so his hold on the ninth-inning role could be slipping.       John Schreiber worked a scoreless ninth to pick up a save Friday against the Angels.

      Advice: Schreiber has his first save of the season, first as a member of the Royals and just the ninth of his MLB career. The right-hander has been outstanding in 2024, however, with an ERA now of 0.98 as evidence.       Josh Hader picked up his fifth save of the season on Friday night, working a scoreless ninth inning to preserve a three-run advantage against the Tigers.

      Advice: After struggling for most of the season, Hader recorded saves on back-to-back nights for the first time all season. The 30-year-old southpaw did issue a two-out walk to Jake Rogers after getting Ryan Vilade on a swinging-third strike, Javier Baez on a fly ball to center, but he battled back to get Andy Ibanez on strikes to end it. He has now converted five of his first six save chances with an impressive 27/8 K/BB ratio over 17 innings on the year — it’s just the 5.29 ERA that looks horribly out of place.       Hader earned a save against the Yankees on Thursday, allowing one hit and striking out one batter over 1.1 scoreless innings.

      Advice: Hader was called upon with two outs and a runner on first with Houston protecting a one-run lead in the bottom of the eighth inning. He got Anthony Rizzo to pop out to end the frame, then completed the save with a scoreless ninth despite allowing a leadoff single. It was just the second time this season Hader was asked to get more than three outs, though he kept his workload relatively light by throwing 14 of his 18 pitches for strikes.       Advice: Hader came on to record the final out of the eighth inning before heading back out to spin a scoreless ninth inning to collect his fourth save of the season. The 30-year-old lefty has converted four of five save chances in his Astros debut so far to go along with a bloated 5.63 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 25/7 K/BB ratio across 16 innings (16 appearances).       McArthur picked up the save Wednesday against the Brewers after a perfect two-thirds of an inning.

      Advice: The ball was handed to Tyler Duffey for the ninth, but after Duffey walked two batters and gave up a double to Brice Turang, McArthur was forced to step in and close the door. The save snapped McArthur out of a two-game slump in which he allowed five runs (four earned) and was charged with two blown saves and two losses.
