      Kirby Yates struck out three in a scoreless ninth to get a save against the Dodgers on Thursday.

      Advice: Yates did allow a walk, but this was a much better effort than the one he had Wednesday when he picked up a save but was fortunate to not blow the opportunity. The right-hander has been outstanding for the overwhelming majority of 2024, and this scoreless outing gives him a 1.11 ERA along with 10 saves. He isn’t giving up this closing gig.       Nolan Gorman finished 0-for-4 as the Cardinals’ cleanup man Thursday against the Pirates.

      Jimenez (hamstring) will begin a rehab assignment in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League White Sox on Thursday, LaMond Pope of the Chicago Tribune reports.

      Advice: Jimenez has been on the shelf for just over three weeks with a left hamstring strain and is now ready to test himself in a game setting. The White Sox haven't revealed how many rehab games the designated hitter might require, but a return from the 10-day injured list next week would seem to be on the table.       Eloy Jiménez (hamstring) started a minor league rehab assignment on Thursday in the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League.

      Advice: Jiménez has been snake-bitten by injuries this season and is working his way back from a mid-May left hamstring strain after missing a couple weeks earlier in the year with a groin issue.       Cowser hit a two-run home run in his lone at-bat in Wednesday's 4-2 win over Atlanta.

      Advice: Cowser entered the game as a defensive replacement for Ryan O'Hearn in the top of the eighth inning, and he was able to make some noise on offense with his go-ahead blast a half-inning later. The homer was Cowser's first since May 26 and just his second since the start of May, as his hot start to the year has faded. He's batting just .196 over his last 16 contests, though Cedric Mullins' struggles at the plate have allowed Cowser to maintain a decent share of playing time.       Kimbrel struck out one in a perfect ninth inning Wednesday to record his 16th save of the season in a 4-2 win over Atlanta.

      Advice: Facing the team he made his debut with back in 2010, Kimbrel delivered his 12th straight appearance without allowing an earned run.       Advice: He has lost some playing time since the return of Taylor Walls but has still started four of the last six games.       Advice: The rookie center fielder took Hogan Harris deep in the fifth inning, setting the stage for Merrill to play hero by ripping a slider from Mason Miller down the right-field line in the bottom of the ninth for his first career walk-off homer. In the process, Merrill become the youngest player in Padres history with a walk-off blast, and the youngest player in MLB history with a two-homer game that included a walk-off shot. The 21-year-old snapped a 26-game homer drought with the performance, and he's been heating up in June, batting .355 (11-for-31) over the last eight contests with four doubles, two steals, four RBI and five runs.       Advice: Yates wasn't sharp in the ninth inning, putting runners on first and second with two outs. Jason Heyward doubled to center field to knock in one run, but Andy Pages ignored a stop sign at third base and the relay throw from Marcus Semien to Jonah Heim was in time to get the final out at the plate. Prior to Wednesday, Yates was on a six-inning scoreless streak dating back to May 15, though he had just one save in that span due to the Rangers' generally poor play.
