    • Pete Fairbanks earns save in win over Marlins
Pete Fairbanks put out a bases-loaded jam to secure a save in a 9-5 win over the Marlins on Tuesday.

Advice: Phil Maton started the ninth inning with the Rays up by four runs, but he allowed three straight hits, so the Rays called on Fairbanks to bail them out. The right-hander got two strikeouts and then a groundout to end the game and earn his seventh save of the season. The 30-year-old has battled some injuries and nerve issues in his throwing hand, but he has a 3.50 ERA on the season and remains a solid closer when healthy. Rotoworld Today, 7:17 pm
    • Jared Jones holds Dodgers scoreless in win
Jared Jones threw six scoreless innings in a win over the Dodgers, striking out six and walking three.

Advice: Jones allowed three hits on the night and just one extra-base hit, a double to Freddie Freeman. After allowing at least three runs in four straight starts, including five earned runs in his last start against the Tigers, some questions were mounting about whether Jones was tiring. Instead, he came out and shut down the Dodgers. It wasn’t an electric start with just a 21 percent CSW, but he did get 12 whiffs on 51 swings for a 24 percent whiff rate. The rookie has continued to impress with a 3.25 ERA and will look to keep it going in a start against the Twins this weekend. Rotoworld Today, 6:39 pm

    • Blanks Dodgers in fourth win
Jones (4-5) earned the win Tuesday over the Dodgers, allowing three hits and three walks over six scoreless innings. He struck out six.

Advice: It was an impressive return to form for Jones after he gave up a season-high five runs in 4.1 innings in his last start against Detroit. It's the fifth quality start in Jones' last six outings -- his ERA now sits at 3.25 with a 1.01 WHIP 76:15 K:BB across 12 starts (69.1 innings) in his rookie campaign. The 22-year-old Jones is currently lined up for a home matchup with the Twins this weekend in his next start. Rotowire.com Today, 6:27 pm

    • Throws bullpen session
Diaz (shoulder) threw a bullpen session Tuesday, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.

Advice: Diaz threw 21 pitches during his mound session, and manager Carlos Mendoza said afterward that there is a good chance the 30-year-old reliever begins a rehab assignment in the minors Thursday. It's unclear how many minor-league reps the Mets will give their star closer, but the fact Diaz is already able to begin an assignment likely signals that he will only require a minimum-length stint on the IL. • Edwin Díaz to start rehab assignment this week
Edwin Díaz (shoulder) will begin a minor league rehab assignment on Thursday.

Advice: Díaz threw a bullpen session on Tuesday without any issues and the Mets are hoping to have one of their primary closing options back on June 11, when first eligible to return. The electrifying 30-year-old righty hit the injured list back in late May with a right shoulder impingement. He’s struggled this season, but remains arguably the best option for New York manager Carlos Mendoza moving forward over Adam Ottavino, Jake Diekman and Reed Garrett. Rotoworld Today, 2:23 pm

    • Second career Tommy John surgery
Means underwent successful Tommy John surgery Monday in Texas to repair a torn UCL in his left elbow, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Means will need 12-to-18 months to recover from the procedure, and given that he previously had the procedure in April 2022, it's reasonable to expect him to trend toward the longer end of that timetable. The veteran southpaw has now seen three straight seasons come to an early end, as he was previously held out during the Orioles' playoff run last fall when he experienced renewed soreness in the surgically repaired elbow. Even though his elbow checked out fine over the offseason, the Orioles chose to slow play Means to begin the 2024 campaign, but it wasn't long before he experienced another flareup. Means made just four starts for the Orioles prior to landing on the 15-day injured list last Thursday with a forearm strain. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 1:27 pm

    • John Means undergoes second Tommy John surgery
John Means underwent his second Tommy John surgery on Monday.

Advice: This wasn’t the internal brace procedure, so if Means, who will be a free agent this winter, does return next year, it won’t be until the end of the season. Means totaled just 40 1/3 innings rehabbing in the minors and 44 1/3 major league innings in between his surgeries. He had a 2.64 ERA in his eight starts for the Orioles between this year and last. • Cleared to start Wednesday
Singer (illness) is listed as the Royals' probable starting pitcher for Wednesday's game against the Guardians in Cleveland, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Singer looks to be in the clear on the health front after an unspecified illness left him feeling lethargic and unable to play catch Wednesday before the Royals opted to scratch him from his scheduled start Thursday against the Twins, according to ESPN.com. He apparently demonstrated enough progress over the weekend and shouldn't face any major workload restrictions when he takes the hill Wednesday. Through 11 starts this season, Singer has gone 4-2 with a 2.63 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 64:19 across 61.2 innings. Rotowire.com Sunday, 8:04 pm

    • Picks up sixth save
Fairbanks allowed one hit during one scoreless inning to pick up the save Sunday against the Orioles.

Advice: Fairbanks worked around a two-out single to pick up his sixth save. It was his third save since May 11, when he made his return from a stint on the IL. Over the three weeks since his return, he's appeared in 10 games and has yet to allow an earned run while allowing nine baserunners and striking out nine over 10 innings. Rotowire.com Sunday, 5:22 pm
