      Advice: Both of the runs charged to Assad came in the fourth inning when the Reds strung together three straight singles. Still, it was a positive effort for Assad overall after he'd given up seven runs (six earned) over 9.2 innings in his previous two outings, though he now has seven or more strikeouts in three of his last four starts. Overall, the 26-year-old right-hander is 4-1 with a 2.27 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 61:26 K:BB through 63.1 innings this season.       Javier Assad wasn’t involved in the decision after allowing two runs over 5 2/3 innings Friday against the Reds.

      Advice: Assad struck out seven and kept the ball in the yard today after allowing two homers in each of his previous two starts. He left with a one-run lead in the sixth, but that disappeared in the seventh. He’ll face the Reds again in his next start, though it will be in Cincinnati this time.     • Kerry Carpenter dealing with lumbar spine fracture
      The Tigers announced Friday that Kerry Carpenter is dealing with a lumbar spine fracture — not just inflammation as previously announced.

      Advice: No word yet on an updated timeline, but there are rumblings that the 26-year-old slugger is going to miss at least a couple of months.       Carpenter has been diagnosed with a lumbar spine stress fracture, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.

      Advice: Carpenter was placed on the 10-day injured list earlier this week with what was called lumbar spine inflammation, but further testing appears to have revealed a more significant injury. The Tigers have not divulged a potential timetable for Carpenter's return, but his absence could be a lengthy one.       Orioles GM Mike Elias announced Friday that Means will undergo surgery to repair the UCL in his left elbow and will miss the rest of the season, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.

      Advice: The left-hander headed for a second opinion after being diagnosed with a forearm strain last week, and he'll end up having a third straight injury-shortened campaign. It remains to be seen if Means will require a Tommy John surgery -- which he also underwent in April 2022 -- or a lesser procedure, but his absence is likely to push in 2025 regardless.       Orioles’ general manager Mike Elias told reporters on Friday that left-hander John Means will undergo season-ending surgery to repair the UCL in his left elbow.

      Advice: Oof. It’s unclear if Means will undergo another Tommy John surgery, or if he’ll have the internal brace procedure done, but either way he’ll miss the rest of the 2024 campaign and at least the start of the 2025 season while recovering.
