• Ken Waldichuk undergoes Tommy John surgery
Ken Waldichuk underwent Tommy John surgery on Wednesday.

Advice: Waldichuk underwent a full Tommy John elbow reconstruction and will be sidelined at least until the later stages of the 2025 campaign. The 26-year-old lefty suffered the injury originally last September and was ultimately unable to avoid surgery. Rotoworld Today, 2:14 pm

  • Set for live BP on Friday
Wicks (forearm) will throw a live batting practice session Friday, Bruce Levine of 670TheScore.com reports.

Advice: Wicks has been on the shelf since late April with a left forearm strain but could be cleared to begin a rehab assignment if things go well Friday. Because he hasn't missed that much time, he probably won't need more than one or two rehab starts. However, given his 4.70 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 28:9 K:BB across 23 innings before going on the IL, he wouldn't seem to be a given to be re-inserted into the Cubs' rotation once he's ready. • Positive strides in bullpen session
Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns said in an interview on SNY on Thursday that Senga (shoulder) recently had "a good bullpen" session where he was "making some strides."

Advice: Senga had to pull back on facing hitters while he dealt with mechanical issues, but it sounds like he and the Mets were happy with how his last throwing session went. Stearns said he wasn't sure exactly when Senga would be ready to begin a rehab assignment, but it sounds like it could be relatively soon. The right-hander is coming back from a right posterior shoulder capsule strain. Rotowire.com Today, 1:46 pm

  • Mets option Joey Lucchesi to minors
Mets optioned LHP Joey Lucchesi to Triple-A Syracuse.

Advice: Lucchesi started on Wednesday night and was ineffective, allowing five runs on five hits in 4 1/3 innings. He’ll now be sent down so the Mets can bring up reliever Josh Walker and get extra insurance for the bullpen with a long stretch of games coming up. We’ll likely see Lucchesi up again, but he remains off the fantasy radar for now. Rotoworld Today, 12:37 pm
  • Optioned to Triple-A
The Mets optioned Lucceshi to Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday.

Advice: Lucchesi made a spot start Wednesday in Philadelphia, getting knocked around for five runs over 4.1 innings of work. He'll rejoin the Syracuse rotation while Josh Walker gives the Mets a fresh relief arm. Rotowire.com Today, 12:32 pm
  • Clarke Schmidt fires eight-inning gem vs. Twins
Clarke Schmidt matched a career-high with eight strikeouts over eight scoreless innings on Thursday in a win over the the Twins.

Advice: Schmidt authored the strongest start of his career during Thursday afternoon’s matinee at Target Field, completing seven innings for the first time in his career, while also scattering three hits and needing just 103 pitches (69 strikes) to navigate eight nearly-flawless frames. He generated 16 swinging strikes, including 10 on his cutter alone, finishing with a robust 34 percent CSW. The 28-year-old righty has been a revelation this season for fantasy managers as a late-round steal in deeper mixed leagues. He’ll carry a sparkling 2.49 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 55/15 K/BB ratio across 50 2/3 innings (nine starts) into a home outing on Tuesday against the Mariners. Rotoworld Today, 12:30 pm

  • Joe Ryan allows four runs in loss to Yankees
Joe Ryan was charged with four runs over 5 1/3 innings on Thursday in a loss to the Yankees.

Advice: Ryan surrendered six hits, including a leadoff homer to Anthony Volpe, and was simply out-dueled by Yankees starter Clarke Schmidt, who reeled off eight shutout frames against Minnesota’s lineup. He finished with five strikeouts and only handed out one free pass. He’ll bring a solid 3.57 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 58/7 K/BB ratio across 53 innings (nine starts) into a road tilt on Tuesday against the Nationals. Rotoworld Today, 12:30 pm

  • Undergoes Tommy John surgery
Waldichuk underwent Tommy John surgery on his left elbow Wednesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Waldichuk was initially diagnosed with a UCL tear last October. He opted for a minor procedure on his elbow last fall in hopes of avoiding the surgery he eventually had Wednesday. The left-hander figures to be sidelined until around midseason of 2025. Rotowire.com Today, 11:59 am

  • Angels trade for Roansy Contreras
Pirates traded RHP Roansy Contreras to the Angels

Advice: Contreras was designated for assignment by the Pirates on Saturday to make room for Paul Skenes. The 24-year-old was moved to the bullpen this season and had posted a 4.41 ERA, 1.65 WHIP, and 16/8 K/BB ratio across 16 1/3 innings. However, Contreras was a top-100 prospect just a couple of years ago, ranking as MLB Pipeline’s 67th overall prospect prior to the 2022 season. Entering 2024, Contreras had a 3.67 ERA in 98 MLB innings with a 9.5 percent walk rate and 21.4 percent strikeout rate while limiting opposing batters to a .225 batting average. However, he had seen a troubling decline in fastball velocity and his command wasn’t good enough to hide his diminishing raw stuff. Still, at just 24 years old, there could easily be a solid MLB pitcher lurking in there somewhere; he just didn’t necessarily land in the best place for that pitcher to be unearthed.
