    • Spencer Turnbull to pitch in relief on Tuesday night
      Spencer Turnbull will pitch in relief during Tuesday’s game against the Blue Jays.

      Advice: Turnbull is expected to piggyback with southpaw Cristopher Sánchez on Tuesday night when the Phillies take on the Blue Jays at Citizens Bank Park. The 31-year-old right-hander has been brilliant this season in his Philadelphia debut before Taijuan Walker’s return last week bumped him back to the bullpen. He figures to gobble up a couple frames in this contest, which will be his first appearance since last Tuesday when he allowed two runs over 5 1/3 frames against the Angels.       Cole (elbow) completed a bullpen session Tuesday and is expected to throw another bullpen this weekend, Jorge Castillo of ESPN.com reports.

      Advice: Cole is continuing to progress toward returning after throwing off a mound May 4 for the first time since being placed on the injured list in March. He tossed another bullpen session Tuesday without a setback and is expected to continue to ramp up his throwing efforts in the coming weeks.       Phillies manager Rob Thomson said that Turnbull will pitch in relief Tuesday against the Blue Jays, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.

      Advice: Thomson wouldn't reveal exactly how Turnbull will be used, but Gelb says the right-hander will likely pitch three innings or so in what could be a piggyback situation with starter Cristopher Sanchez. Turnbull was demoted to the bullpen recently in spite of a 1.67 ERA and 36:10 K:BB in 32.1 innings this season, as the team has an eye on his workload since he hasn't thrown more than 56.2 innings in a season since 2019.       Fried (2-1) took the loss Sunday against the Dodgers, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks while striking out seven over seven innings.

      Advice: Fried quickly surrendered a two-run homer to Shohei Ohtani in the opening frame. He was able to settle in thereafter, blanking the Dodgers over the next four innings before Teoscar Hernandez got a hold of one in the sixth to make it a 4-0 ballgame. Sunday was Fried's first outing this year giving up multiple home runs, but he's also gone at least six innings in three straight while striking out at least six in all three appearances.       Max Fried allowed four runs on four hits in seven innings in a loss to the Dodgers on Sunday.

      Advice: Fried pitched well enough on the day, striking out seven and walking three while posting a 20 percent whiff rate and 30 percent CSW. He didn’t have his best command and had a zone rate under 50 percent on the day, but he avoided major damage until giving up a two-run home run to Teoscar Hernandez in the sixth inning. From a performance standpoint, Turnbull has earned a spot in Philadelphia's rotation with a 1.67 ERA and 36:10 K:BB in 32.1 innings this season, but the team also wants to keep an eye on his workload since he hasn't thrown more than 56.2 innings in a season since 2019.       Advice: This was Cole's first bullpen session since he was shut down from throwing in mid-March, thus it was a significant milestone as the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner works his way back to the Yankees rotation. Per Goodman, Cole was "giddy" after throwing Saturday, so it appears the session went well.       Advice: It’s the first session for Cole since March when the right-hander was shut down with nerve inflammation in his right elbow. The next step is likely another session in the pen for the 33-year-old, but it’s a positive sign with Cole reportedly “giddy” over how things went.       Jordan Hicks gave up four runs — two earned — and walked four in four innings Friday in a loss to the Phillies.

      Advice: Improved control has been a big key for Hicks in his successful run in the Giants rotation, but this is the second time in his last three starts that he’s walked four batters, giving him14 walks in 38 innings for the year.
