    • AJ Smith-Shawver promoted for start on Thursday
Braves recalled RHP AJ Smith-Shawver from Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday.

Advice: This move was rumored yesterday and is now official. With Bryce Elder disappointing in his five starts, the 21-year-old Smith-Shawver will get a chance to stake his claim to a spot in the rotation. Daysbel Hernández was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett in a corresponding move. Smith-Shawver has improved his velocity and overall stuff+ grades this year in the minors, but his command has been an issue, leading to a decent amount of hard contact. In May, he has a 5.40 ERA and 1.47 WHIP with 19 strikeouts and nine walks in 18 1/3 innings. The potential is clearly there, but he needs to show more consistency before we feel confident about his ability to stick in the rotation this year. Rotoworld 5 minutes ago
    • Leads off against lefty again
Monasterio started at second base and went 0-for-4 in Wednesday's 1-0 loss to the Marlins.

Advice: Monasterio started in each of the Brewers' three games in Miami and led off the past two contests, reaching base four times while contributing a home run and a stolen base during that stretch. Milwaukee has faced lefty starters in each of those contests, so while Monasterio looks like he'll remain a key part of the lineup in those matchups, he's still operating in the short side of a platoon at second base with the lefty-hitting Brice Turang. • Raps out two hits in loss
Sanchez went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles in Wednesday's 1-0 loss to the Marlins.

Advice: Sanchez has seen a surge in playing time of late, though he's been aided by the Brewers facing three consecutive left-handed starting pitchers. At the very least, Sanchez seems to have carved out a short-side platoon role, with he and top backstop William Contreras starting at either catcher or designated hitter when the Brewers face a southpaw. After Wednesday's two-hit effort, Sanchez is now holding down a .764 OPS over 99 plate appearances on the season, making him one of the more productive No. 2 catchers in baseball. • Lands on IL with groin strain
The Rangers placed Gray on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a right groin strain, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Advice: Gray suffered the injury in Tuesday's 5-2 loss to the Phillies, and an MRI revealed a mild strain. He would seem to have a good chance at returning from the IL when his 15 days are up or shortly thereafter, but it will depend on how he recovers over the next several days. Gray had been slated to start Sunday in Minnesota, but those duties could now fall to Jose Urena. Rotowire.com 14 minutes ago

    • Goes on IL with triceps injury
The Reds placed Pagan on the 15-day injured list prior to Thursday's game against the Padres due to a right triceps injury, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Pagan hadn't pitched since Sunday due to the injury, and though an MRI on his arm recently came back negative, the right-hander apparently didn't respond well to playing catch Tuesday. He'll be shut down for the next two weeks while recovering from the injury, depriving the Reds of one of their middle-relief options in front of closer Alexis Diaz. • Sent back to Triple-A
The Mariners optioned Bolton to Triple-A Tacoma on Thursday.

Advice: Bolton will cede his spot on the 26-man roster and in the bullpen to right-hander Mike Baumann, whom the Mariners acquired from the Orioles on Wednesday. In 15 relief appearances for Seattle this season, Bolton has compiled a 4.41 ERA and 1.29 WHIP across 16.1 innings in relief. Rotowire.com 22 minutes ago

    • Back in majors
The Giants recalled Avila from Double-A Richmond on Thursday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Advice: Avila was optioned Wednesday but will return to the 26-man active roster one day later to replace lefty Blake Snell (personal), who was placed on the paternity list. Manager Bob Melvin will have another relief option at his disposal while Avila is with the big club, but the 26-year-old will likely be sent to Triple-A Sacramento once Snell rejoins the team. • Reaches fourth inning in rehab start
Williamson (shoulder) struck out four and allowed one earned run on five hits and one walk over 3.2 innings Sunday in his rehab start with Triple-A Louisville.

Advice: Sunday's outing was Williamson's first with Louisville but the second overall of his rehab assignment, which he began with High-A Dayton on May 14. Williamson, who has been on the shelf all season with a left shoulder strain, is eligible for activation next week, but he'll likely need at least another rehab start or two to get fully stretched out for a traditional starting role. With Nick Lodolo (groin) tentatively in line to return from the 15-day injured list Monday to bring the Cincinnati rotation back to full strength, Williamson may have to settle for a bullpen role once activated, if the Reds don't elect to option him to Louisville to remain on a starter's schedule. • Falls to Friars
Martinez (1-3) took the loss Wednesday as the Reds were downed 7-3 by the Padres, coughing up five runs on eight hits and a walk over 4.2 innings. He struck out two.

Advice: Making his fifth start of the season, Martinez served up a leadoff homer to Luis Arraez that proved to be a bad omen for the rest of the game as he lasted only 66 pitches (40 strikes) before getting the hook. The right-hander has been volatile in a swingman role for Cincy, posting a 4.81 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 31:6 K:BB through 43 innings, but with Nick Lodolo (groin) set to rejoin the rotation Monday, Martinez should be headed back to the bullpen.
