    • Shut down for at least one month
Schmidt (lat) will be shut down for 4-to-6 weeks, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports.

Advice: Schmidt landed on the injured list Thursday, and he'll be in line for a lengthy absence. He'll be sidelined until the All-Star break, leaving the Yankees shorthanded in the rotation until Gerrit Cole (elbow) can return. Rotowire.com Thursday, 4:48 pm

    • Exits Thursday's start
Gallen exited Thursday's start against the Mets with an apparent injury, Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.comreports.

Advice: Gallen threw only six pitches and failed to record an out before being pulled from the contest. More information should be available after Thursday's game, though he has battled hamstring tightness a few times this season, most recently on May 18. Rotowire.com Thursday, 4:43 pm

    • Zac Gallen exits with trainer after six pitches
Zac Gallen left Thursday’s start against the Mets with a trainer after just six pitches.

Advice: Not good. The positive news here, if that’s at all possible, is that his abrupt exit doesn’t appear to be arm-related. Gallen was limping slightly, but was able to walk off with a trainer after facing just one batter during Thursday’s series opener against the Mets. There should be an update on his status shortly. • Placed on injured list
The Yankees placed Schmidt on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a right lat strain.

Advice: Schmidt gave up two runs (one earned) in five innings during Sunday's loss to the Padres, and he appears to have injured his lat in the process. His move to the IL is backdated to Monday, so the 28-year-old right-hander will be able to return beginning June 11. In the meantime, Cody Morris will come up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to fill the opening on New York's roster. Rotowire.com Thursday, 2:15 pm

    • Clarke Schmidt lands on IL with right lat strain
Yankees placed RHP Clarke Schmidt on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to May 27, with a right lat strain.

Advice: Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters Schmidt will be shut down from throwing for the next 4-6 weeks, which likely knocks him out until sometime after the All-Star break. Schmidt was slated to take the ball on Saturday against the Giants, so New York will have to dip into their organizational depth to fill the void. The 28-year-old righty will press pause on an impressive breakthrough campaign as he’s allowed three earned runs or fewer in each of his 11 starts this season, recording a stellar 2.52 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 67/20 K/BB ratio across 60 2/3 innings of work. It’s a significant loss for the Yankees, and fantasy managers as well. There should be a clearer timetable for his return once he’s cleared to resume throwing in a few weeks. • Could be activated next week
Manager Kevin Cash said that Eflin (back) will throw a light bullpen session Thursday and a "ramped-up bullpen session" Sunday before the Rays decide his next steps, Ryan Bass of Bally Sports Sun reports.

Advice: Cash noted that the Rays will wait and see how Eflin feels following Sunday's session, but if his lower-back injury isn't providing any complications, he could be cleared to return from the 15-day injured list next week. When Eflin was placed on the IL on May 20, Cash estimated that the right-hander would need 2-to-4 weeks to make a full recovery, and Eflin currently looks to be tracking toward the short end of that timeline. • Fans eight in no-decision
Kirby did not factor into the decision in a win over the Astros on Wednesday, allowing one run on six hits over six innings while striking out eight.

Advice: Kirby retired the first eight batters he faced to open the contest and didn't allow an extra-base hit over his six innings of work. The right-hander induced 15 swings and misses on the night en route to posting his highest strikeout total in his last six starts. He's now gone six or more innings in four consecutive outings, though he's posted quality starts in only two of those appearances. Kirby has also walked only two batters over six starts in May. • George Kirby collects eight strikeouts vs. Astros
George Kirby allowed one run with eight strikeouts over six innings in a no-decision against the Astros on Wednesday.

Advice: After giving up five runs in back-to-back outings, Kirby put together an excellent start against the Astros. Three hits in the fourth would bring the only run across to score for Houston. Kirby scattered three other hits and did not walk a batter, striking out eight over his six innings of work. The 26-year-old right-hander will take a 4.08 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and a 65/6 K/BB ratio across 68 1/3 innings into a start against the Athletics in Oakland on Tuesday. • Takes first loss
Imanaga (5-1) took the loss Wednesday versus the Brewers, allowing seven runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out one over 4.1 innings.

Advice: Imanaga's last scheduled start was rained out, and instead of pushing him back, the Cubs opted to build in some extra rest for the southpaw. That plan appears to have backfired, as the seven runs he allowed Wednesday matched the total he'd given up in his first nine starts combined. His ERA rose from 0.84 to 1.86, and he's added a 1.00 WHIP and 59:10 K:BB across 58 innings through his first 10 big-league starts. Imanaga will look to shake off his first poor outing when he next takes the mound, which is tentatively projected to be a home start versus the White Sox. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 9:10 pm
