    • Designated for assignment
The Blue Jays designated Biggio for assignment Friday, Mike Wilner of the Toronto Star reports.

Advice: In order to make room on the active roster for Spencer Horwitz, who was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on Friday, the Blue Jays will push Biggio off their 40-man. The 29-year-old utility man began the year as an everyday starter, but he began losing work after slashing .200/.323/.291 with nine RBI through 130 plate appearances. Although his .614 OPS on the year represents the lowest mark of his six-year MLB career, his defensive versatility could still make him an attractive option for other organizations. • Blue Jays designate Cavan Biggio for assignment
Blue Jays designated INF-OF Cavan Biggio for assignment,

Advice: Spencer Horwitz is coming up in his place. Biggio saved himself from being non-tendered with a strong finish last season, but he could never get it going this year, batting .200/.323/.291 with two homers in 131 plate appearances. While he has versatility working in his favor, he’s not particularly good at any position, and he’s hit .219/.327/.351 since the beginning of 2021. The Jays will try to trade Biggio, but that might require taking on part of the approx. $2.4 million he’s still owed over the rest of the season. If he clears waivers because of that salary, he’ll likely remain with the organization, since he doesn’t have the service time to reject the assignment and still collect the money. • Nico Hoerner out of lineup due to hand injury
Cubs manager Craig Counsell now says X-rays last night on Nico Hoerner’s hand came back “somewhat inconclusive,” and the second baseman is not playing in Friday’s game.

Advice: It was originally reported that the X-rays came back negative after Hoerner was hit on the right hand by a pitch. Hoerner, though, had some trouble gripping the bat and swinging today. Hopefully, this is still just a day-to-day thing. There is the potential for some bad news, though. David Bote is starting at second base tonight. Rotoworld Today, 2:26 pm

    • On bench Friday
Rojas is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Royals.

Advice: Rojas will sit for a second straight game against a left-handed pitcher, with Daniel Lynch taking the mound for Kansas City in the series opener. Dylan Moore will slide to third base while Ryan Bliss plays second. Rotowire.com Today, 1:57 pm

    • Fielding, could hit Friday
Mateo (concussion) took ground balls Friday and could participate in batting practice, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Mateo was able to play catch Thursday and took another step forward in his rehab from a concussion he sustained June 2. The second baseman appears to be on track to return next week. Rotowire.com Today, 1:53 pm

    • On bench Friday
Valdez is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the White Sox, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

Advice: Valdez will dodge a matchup with southpaw Garrett Crochet, giving way to Jamie Westbrook at second base Friday. Since Vaughn Grissom (hamstring) got hurt on June 1, Valdez is 7-for-20 with three homers, eight RBI and one strikeout. Rotowire.com Today, 1:41 pm
    • Sitting out after HBP
Hoerner is not in Friday's lineup in Cincinnati after being hit on the hand by a pitch in Thursday's win over the White Sox, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Advice: Hoerner was struck by a pitch in the fourth inning Thursday but stayed in and finished that game. He underwent a precautionary X-ray afterward, which evidently came back clean. However, it could be dealing with some residual soreness, hence his absence from Friday's lineup. Consider him day-to-day. David Bote will handle second base Friday. Rotowire.com Today, 1:22 pm

    • Marlins recall SS Edwards from Triple-A
Marlins recalled SS Xavier Edwards from Triple-A Jacksonville.

Advice: The Marlins need infield depth with Tim Anderson on the bereavement list and Otto Lopez on the paternity list. Edwards was hitting .365 with no home runs in 13 games with Triple-A. He’s batting first for the Marlins in Friday night’s game against the Guardians. Rotoworld Today, 12:50 pm

    • Marlins place Lopez on paternity list
Marlins placed SS Otto Lopez on paternity list.

Advice: Lopez will be away from the team for three days as he takes care of things much more important than baseball. Lopez is hitting .295 with three home runs in 95 at-bats with Miami this season. Rotoworld Today, 12:44 pm
