    • Exceptional in rehab start
Whitlock (oblique) struck out five and allowed two hits and one walk over 4.2 scoreless innings Wednesday in his rehab start with Triple-A Worcester.

Advice: Whitlock pumped in 40 of his 61 pitches for strikes and induced 12 swings and misses, looking as strong as ever while pitching in a game for the first time since April 16. Even though he didn't get fully stretched out for a traditional starter's workload Wednesday, Whitlock could return from the 15-day injured list to make his next appearance out of the Red Sox rotation. If the Red Sox decide he won't require an additional rehab appearance, Whitlock would likely start with the big club either Monday or Tuesday at Tampa Bay. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 10:44 am

    • Not in Wednesday's lineup
Merrill is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Rockies.

Advice: The Rockies are sending southpaw Austin Gomber to the hill, so Padres manager Mike Shildt decided it would be a good day to give the left-handed-hitting Merrill a breather. Jose Azocar will patrol center field Wednesday. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 10:24 am
    • CJ Abrams sits against tough lefty
Like the rest of the Nationals’ lefty hitters, CJ Abrams is on the bench for Wednesday’s game against Garrett Crochet and the White Sox.

Advice: It makes for a weird lineup, as Ildemaro Vargas is playing left field and batting third and Rule 5 pick Nasim Nuñez is making just his second start of the year. It’s the first time Abrams has sat since Apr. 8, when he was dealing with hand soreness. Rotoworld Yesterday, 10:16 am

    • Garrett Whitlock sharp in rehab start
Garrett Whitlock (oblique) pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out five, in his rehab start for Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday.

Advice: Whitlock is slated to come off the injured list and rejoin the Red Sox rotation next week. The Red Sox could go to six starters for a spell then or send Cooper Criswell, who has been terrific, either to the bullpen or Triple-A. Rotoworld Yesterday, 9:53 am

    • Swipes another bag
Merrill went 1-for-4 with a run and a stolen base in Tuesday's loss to the Rockies.

Advice: Merrill struck out in his first two at-bats before reaching on a fielder's choice in the seventh inning and coming around to score soon thereafter. He added a single and stolen base in the eighth but was left stranded. Merrill has notched three thefts over his past three games and ranks second on San Diego with seven steals on the season. • Getting rare day off
Abrams is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the White Sox, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.

Advice: The lefty-hitting Abrams started in both ends of Tuesday's doubleheader and the White Sox are bringing a lefty (Garrett Crochet) to the hill for Wednesday's series finale, so Nationals manager Dave Martinez likely decided that Abrams could benefit from a game off. With Abrams out of the lineup for the first time since April 8, lightly used Rule 5 pick Nasim Nunez will pick up a rare start at shortstop. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 9:19 am

    • Moves up to leadoff spot
Westburg will start at third base and bat leadoff in Wednesday's game versus the Blue Jays.

Advice: Westburg will occupy the top spot in the batting order for the first time in his big-league career. Normal leadoff man Gunnar Henderson will shift down to the cleanup spot while Toronto brings in left-hander Yusei Kikuchi. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 8:02 am
    • Power trending up
Arozarena went 1-for-5 with a solo home run and two runs scored Tuesday against the Red Sox.

Advice: Arozarena slugged his eighth home run of the season and fifth in his last 11 games. He's also stolen three bags in that span. While his counting stats have been trending positively, Arozarena has still struck out at a 31.5 percent clip in May, leading to a .205 batting average for the month. • Bounces back with win
Greene (2-2) got the win over the Diamondbacks on Tuesday, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out five over seven innings.

Advice: Greene's only blunder of an inning came in the third after he allowed the first two guys on before they came around to score on a base knock from Blaze Alexander. He otherwise kept Arizona quiet and put together an excellent rebound outing after some mixed results against the Diamondbacks last week. Greene has walked at least a batter in every start this season, but his one free pass was significantly better than the nine he'd given up over his last two starts. The 24-year-old flamethrower now owns a 3.27 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 58:22 K:BB in 52.1 innings. He lines up to complete a two-start week against the Dodgers this weekend. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 4:09 am
