    • Officially demoted
The Mets optioned Young to Triple-A Syracuse on Thursday.

Advice: Young was expected to be the Mets' roster casualty as a result of Edwin Diaz's (shoulder) return, and his move to Syracuse is now official. The left-hander has allowed just one run in nine innings with the Mets and also boasts a 1.59 ERA in the minors, so it's likely he rejoins New York's bullpen at some point later in the summer. • Back from injured list
The Mets reinstated Diaz (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list Thursday.

Advice: Diaz has been on the injured list since late May due to a right shoulder impingement. He fired two shutout innings with High-A Brooklyn during a rehab assignment, and manager Carlos Mendoza said Wednesday that the Mets will make Diaz their lone closer once again after the team had used a committee approach during the early portion of the season. The 30-year-old righty currently owns a 5.40 ERA and 1.25 WHIP alongside a 30:7 K:BB through 20 innings on the year and has converted five of his nine save opportunities. • Sheds protective brace
Brash (elbow) has shed the protective brace he'd been wearing following Tommy John surgery and remains at the Mariners' complex in Arizona recovering, MLB.com reports.

Advice: There have been no reported setbacks over the first four weeks-plus of Brash's recovery, as this report seems to corroborate. While Brash remains at the team's spring training complex for now, there's a chance he joins the big-league club for intermittent periods over the course of the rest of the season. With Brash's surgery having included an internal bracing procedure that has shown to speed up the total recovery period, the team remains hopeful of getting the hard-throwing right-hander back in action as soon as next June. • Continues ramping up activity level
Santos (lat) has continued throwing bullpens in recent days and is playing catch out to 105 feet between those sessions, MLB.com reports.

Advice: Santos appears well on track to facing live hitters soon, given his cumulative level of activity recently. The right-hander, who remains without a timetable for return, will only be used in relief once he's activated. However, given he's been sidelined since spring training, he could require a full-length rehab assignment whenever he's deemed ready to take that step. Rotowire.com Today, 11:49 am

    • Taking seat Thursday
Wong is not in the lineup for Thursday's game versus the Phillies.

Advice: The Red Sox will go with Reese McGuire behind the dish in the rubber game of the series. Wong had started each of the previous six contests, with five of those coming at catcher. Rotowire.com Today, 11:49 am

    • Edwin Díaz returns from IL as Mets’ closer
Mets activated RHP Edwin Díaz from the 15-day injured list.

Advice: Díaz is slated to resume closing immediately for the Mets, though the Mets won’t want him to go long without pitching if they don’t generate a save chance these next two days. Díaz missed the minimum 15 days with a shoulder impingement. Rotoworld Today, 11:48 am

    • Mets option Danny Young to Triple-A
Mets optioned LHP Danny Young to Triple-A Syracuse.

Advice: Young gets dropped in spite of a 1.00 ERA through nine innings. It was going to be either he or Dedniel Nuñez, who has a 2.30 ERA in 15 2/3 innings. Reed Garrett is the Mets’ only other optionable reliever, and he wasn’t a candidate for demotion. Rotoworld Today, 11:46 am

    • Lane Thomas tossed for arguing balls and strikes
Lane Thomas was ejected from Thursday’s game in the sixth inning for arguing a called third strike.

Advice: Thomas was tossed from a scoreless game. Nick Senzel, who was supposed to get the day off, replaced him, with Ildemaro Vargas moving from third base to the outfield. Rotoworld Today, 11:43 am

    • Claimed by Nats
The Nationals claimed Salazar off waivers from the Mariners on Thursday and optioned him to Triple-A Rochester, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.

Advice: Salazar will remain in the minor leagues as he switches organizations for the second time this season, but he will still hold a 40-man roster spot. The 26-year-old righty has pitched two scoreless innings in the majors this year with the Dodgers, though he has struggled to a 5.59 ERA and 1.76 WHIP through 37 Triple-A innings.
