      Paul Sewald (oblique) is expected to be activated from the injured list ahead of Tuesday’s series opener against the Reds.

      Advice: The 33-year-old right-hander has been shelved since the end of March due to a left oblique strain, but is finally ready to make his mark on the 2024 season.     • Could return for road trip
      Diamondbacks manager Torrey Lovullo said Friday that Sewald (oblique) is expected back Tuesday for Arizona's road trip, John Gambadoro of ArizonaSports.com reports.

      Advice: Sewald's rehab program was paused after the right-hander experienced soreness from his appearance with Triple-A Reno earlier this week. He returned to action with a bullpen session Wednesday, and the right-hander is slated to pitch in an extended game Saturday, per Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com. If all goes well, Sewald could be back with the team as soon as Tuesday in Cincinnati.     • Mason Miller silences Pirates in non-save spot
      Mason Miller fired a perfect ninth inning on Wednesday in a non-save situation against the Pirates.

      Advice: Miller got the call to protect a four-run lead in the final frame after needing 16 pitches to close out Tuesday’s victory less than 24 hours ago. He got Jack Suwinski to ground out and fanned Henry Davis before coaxing a game-ending ground out from Ke’Bryan Hayes. He averaged 100.8 mph on his fastball and needed just 10 pitches to spin a perfect frame. The hard-throwing 25-year-old righty has reeled off 12 consecutive scoreless appearances since April 2, and has converted eight saves to go along with a microscopic 1.26 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and 29/4 K/BB ratio across 14 1/3 innings of work.       Mason Miller struck out all three batters he faced Tuesday for a save against the Pirates.

      Advice: It’s fine to marvel at Miller’s numbers in the closer’s role to date, but this is what an ace-level talent should be doing while pitching two or three innings per week. There’s a very good chance Miller would struggle to hold up as a starter, but we might never find out for sure. As is, Miller has a 1.35 ERA and eight saves in 13 1/3 innings.       McArthur picked up the save in Tuesday's 4-1 win over the Blue Jays, striking out one in a perfect ninth inning.

      Advice: Miller capped off April with yet another dominant display, punching out all three batters he faced.     • Assad struggles to miss bats in no decision
      Javier Assad allowed one run on five hits in five innings in a no-decision against the Mets on Tuesday.

      Advice: Assad didn’t walk a batter on the night, but he had just one strikeout, a seven percent whiff rate, and a 17 percent CSW. He had just three whiffs on 45 swings in the game and all three of them came on version of a fastball. Assad doesn’t have overpowering stuff, but he can mix and match the shapes and movement on his fastball and has a deep six-pitch arsenal that keeps hitters off balance. That worked tonight and it’s worked for much of the season as evidenced by his 1.97 ERA, but it’s a risky tightrope to walk. He’s still worth starting in most formats while he’s going well, but he can possibly be benched in shallower leagues with weekend against the Brewers. Rotoworld Tuesday, 8:20 pm

    • McArthur notches seventh save of the season
      James McArthur pitched a scoreless ninth inning to preserve a 4-1 win over the Blue Jays on Tuesday.

      Advice: The tall right-hander didn’t allow a single baserunner while striking out one and picking up his seventh save of the season. He has been solid since taking the closer’s job from Will Smith, posting a 2.63 ERA on the year. While there have arguably been better pitchers in the Royals’ bullpen, McArthur is the clear favorite for saves and that isn’t likely to change any time soon. Rotoworld Tuesday, 8:11 pm

      Assad came away with a no-decision in Tuesday's 4-2 loss to the Mets, allowing one run on five hits over five innings. He struck out one without walking a batter.

      Advice: The 26-year-old righty didn't allow much hard contact, as all five hits off him were singles, and Assad tossed 55 of 78 pitches for strikes before leaving the mound with the score tied 1-1. He's had an impressive start to his campaign, and Assad will take a 1.97 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 27:9 K:BB through 32 innings into his next outing, which lines up to come at home this weekend against the Brewers.
