    • Collects five hits in twin bill
Goldschmidt went 5-for-9 with a double and two runs scored in Tuesday's doubleheader split versus the Tigers.

Advice: Goldschmidt had not collected five hits over any two-game span this season prior to Tuesday. Even with the strong performance, the first baseman is slashing a mediocre .236/.323/.318 with two home runs, 11 RBI, 14 runs scored, three doubles and a stolen base over 29 contests. Goldschmidt has yet to lose playing time amid his slow start, but that could change once the Cardinals get players like Dylan Carlson (shoulder), Tommy Edman (wrist) and Matt Carpenter (oblique) back from the injured list. On the positive side, Goldschmidt has hit safely in eight of his last 10 games, so he may be turning things around enough to maintain his place in the lineup. Rotowire.com Tuesday, 11:39 pm
    • Goes deep in nightcap
Donovan went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run in an 11-6 loss to the Tigers in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader.

Advice: Donovan sparked the Cardinals' fifth-inning rally with his homer. The utility man had hit safely in five straight games before going 0-for-4 in the matinee contest. Donovan is slashing .228/.311/.377 with three homers, 16 RBI, 13 runs scored and no stolen bases over 132 plate appearances this season. He remains the Cardinals' preferred leadoff batter and left fielder despite his mediocre hitting so far. Rotowire.com Tuesday, 11:35 pm

    • Heading to minors
Astros general manager Dana Brown said Tuesday that Abreu is not with the MLB club and will be optioned to the Astros' rookie-level Florida Complex League affiliate Wednesday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

Advice: The 37-year-old has struggled to a .099/.156/.113 slash line in 77 plate appearances through the first month of the season, so he'll voluntarily head to Houston's FCL affiliate in an attempt to "get some at-bats and his timing back right," per Brown. It will be the first time in the minors for Abreu, as he immediately joined the White Sox after coming up from Cuba in 2014 and has never had a minor-league rehab assignment. • Astros option veteran José Abreu to minor leagues
Astros optioned 1B José Abreu to extended spring training.

Advice: Astros general manager Dana Brown told reporters Tuesday that the decision was mutually agreed upon to send Abreu to extended spring training in Florida to get some additional at-bats and work on his timing at the plate. The 37-year-old slugger, who signed a three-year, $58.5 million pact with Houston prior to last year, is batting .099 (7-for-71) with just one extra-base hit this season through 22 games. The move presumably clears up a spot for top prospect Joey Loperfido to get some extended run as Houston’s primary option at the cold corner. Rotoworld Tuesday, 1:11 pm

    • Likely to lose playing time
Abreu is likely to lose playing time due to the promotion of Joey Loperfido, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

Advice: Abreu has had a rocky tenure with the Astros overall, and he's hitting a dreadful .099 across 77 plate appearances with a .269 OPS this season. The Astros have publicly remained hopeful that he can turn things around, though he's started only three of the team's last six games. Abreu's share of playing time is likely to only dip further, but his spot on the roster is most likely safe as he is signed through 2025 and is owed roughly $39 million for the remainder of the deal. • Plates two, steals base
Goldschmidt went 2-for-5 with two RBI while netting his first stolen base of the season in Saturday's 7-4 victory over the Mets.

Advice: Goldschmidt one-hopped a two-run double off the wall as part of a four-run first inning for the Cardinals. He added an infield single, a stolen base and another run scored. The former MVP also struck out three times Saturday and has fanned at an elevated 30.1 percent so far this season. The production on the whole has ticked up over the past week, however, with Goldschmidt going 9-for-27 (.333) with one home run and four RBI in that span. Rotowire.com Saturday, 5:04 pm
    • Paul Goldschmidt drives in two in win over Mets
Paul Goldschmidt went 2-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, two RBI, and a stolen base to lead the Cardinals to a 7-4 win over the Mets.

Advice: Goldschmidt seems to be warming up at the plate. He collected two hits on Saturday for his third multi-hit game in his last five contests. Goldschmidt drove in two runs with a double in the first inning and scored on a base hit by Masyn Winn. He singled in the fifth and swiped second for his first stolen base of the season before scoring on a balk. The 36-year-old first baseman is slashing .214/.306/.296 with two homers and 11 RBI across 113 plate appearances. Rotoworld Saturday, 4:37 pm
    • Back at first base Saturday
Abreu is starting at first base and batting eighth in Saturday's contest against the Rockies in Mexico City.

Advice: Abreu has ceded the starting first base job to Jon Singleton as of late, with the former going 1-for-21 over his last seven games. Abreu will hope to turn around his poor start to the season Saturday against Rockies right-hander Cal Quantrill. Rotowire.com Saturday, 2:24 pm

    • Hits bench again Thursday
Abreu is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Cubs.

Advice: Abreu is on the bench for the third time in four games, with Jon Singleton getting the nod at first base in his place. It's clear at this point that Abreu's standing atop the depth chart is on thin ice, as the 37-year-old has followed up a disappointing 2023 campaign with an even more disastrous start to the 2024 season, as he's slashing .065/.132/.081 with a career-worst 25 percent strikeout rate across 68 plate appearances. First base/outfield prospect Joey Loperfido has gotten off to a hot start to the season at Triple-A Sugar Land and could soon be summoned to the big leagues if the Astros aren't confident in Abreu's ability to stage a turnaround and/or if Singleton proves to be a poor replacement for Abreu.
