    • Yainer Diaz (finger) returns to action on Friday
Yainer Diaz (finger) returned to the Astros’ starting lineup for Friday’s series opener against the Tigers.

Advice: It’s the first time that the 25-year-old backstop has been in the lineup since he took a foul tip off of his finger during Sunday’s game. He’ll serve as the team’s designated hitter and bat fifth against tough left-hander Tarik Skubal while Victor Caratini does the catching for the Astros and will bat eighth. Rotoworld Today, 1:28 pm

    • Returning to lineup
Diaz (finger) is batting fifth and is the designated hitter for Friday's game against the Tigers.

Advice: Diaz missed three straight games with a right index finger injury, but he'll be back in action Friday. Considering his injury impacts his throwing and accuracy, Diaz could require a few more games at DH before going behind the dish. The 25-year-old had a six-game hit streak prior to being injured with four homers during that stretch. Rotowire.com Today, 1:20 pm

    • Jon Singleton to see bulk of action at first base
Astros’ general manager Dana Brown told reporters on Friday that Jon Singleton will see the bulk of the action at first base following the release of Jose Abreu.

Advice: Brown also noted that Singleton probably won’t play against most left-handers, in which case Mauricio Dubon would see short-side platoon at-bats there. I don’t know what it’s going to take for Joey Loperfido to get an opportunity to play first base for the Astros, but they seem to be doing everything in their power to avoid putting him there. Singleton is hitting just .213/.316/.333 with five homers and 14 RBI in 174 plate appearances on the season. Rotoworld Today, 1:16 pm

    • Rehab bumped to Triple-A
Sano (knee) will continue his rehab assignment at Triple-A Salt Lake on Friday.

Advice: Sano suffered a setback in his rehab assignment May 26 after burning himself with a heating pad, but he resumed his minor-league rehab Saturday in the Arizona Complex League. After five ACL games, Sano has joined Triple-A Salt Lake, where he'll likely make a few appearances before being activated from the injured list and rejoining the Angels' active roster. • Absent from lineup
LeMahieu is not in the lineup for Friday's contest in Boston.

Advice: He will yield to Oswaldo Cabrera at third base as the Yankees begin a weekend series against their rivals. LeMahieu has just a .497 OPS and zero extra-base hits in 13 games since coming off the injured list. Rotowire.com Today, 12:21 pm

    • On bench Friday
Horwitz is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Guardians.

Advice: Horwitz will yield to Isiah Kiner-Falefa at the keystone Friday with southpaw Logan Allen on the mound for Cleveland. Horwitz had started at second base in five consecutive games since being called up June 7 but each of those contests featured a right-handed opposing pitcher. Rotowire.com Today, 12:11 pm
    • Taking seat against lefty
O'Hearn is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Phillies, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

Advice: O'Hearn will avoid a matchup against southpaw Ranger Suarez on Friday, as Adley Rutschman fills in at DH and James McCann catches. O'Hearn is just 1-for-11 against lefties in 2024 and all nine of his home runs have come against right-handed pitching. Rotowire.com Today, 12:03 pm

    • Astros release 1B Jose Abreu
      Astros released 1B Jose Abreu.

Advice: The 37-year-old from Cuba has accomplished a lot in his career. Abreu is a three-time All-Star, three-time Silver Slugger award winner, won the Rookie of the Year award in 2014 and Most Valuable Player award in 2020. It’s undeniable that his production has fallen off a cliff over the last two seasons, though. Abreu hit .237/.296/.383 in 141 games last year and his average fell to .124 in 113 at-bats this year. He’s in the second year of a three-year $58.3 million deal, but the Astros recognized the sunk cost and will be on the hook for the remainder of the money still owed to Abreu. • Cut loose by Astros
The Astros released Abreu on Friday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

Advice: Abreu was in the second year of a three-year, $58.5 million contract with Houston but will hit the open market after a dreadful start to the 2024 season. In 120 big-league plate appearances, Abreu posted a .362 OPS with a career-worst 23.3 percent K rate and a 3.4 percent walk rate. Amid his struggles, Abreu spent nearly a month in the minors, beginning at the Astros' FCL affiliate before being brought up to Triple-A Sugar Land, where he went hitless in seven at-bats. Although the 37-year-old didn't show much to indicate improvements are coming, he's still just three years removed from a 30-homer season and is a former AL MVP, making him an intriguing reclamation project as a free agent.
