    • Nick Castellanos finally collects first double
Nick Castellanos doubled, singled and walked twice versus the Giants on Monday.

Advice: Each time it looks like Castellanos might be turning the corner, he’s gone right back to slumping the next day. Still, this rates as his best game so far this season. The double was hit 389 feet and would have been a homer in nine ballparks. Incredibly, it was the first two-bagger of the year for a guy who once had 58 of them. He finished with 37 last season. • Swipes bag Sunday
Melendez went 2-for-4 with a double and a stolen base in Sunday's 3-2 extra-inning loss to the Rangers.

Advice: This was Melendez's first multi-hit effort since April 19 -- he went 2-for-36 over the previous 12 contests. The 25-year-old started the year hot, batting .325 over his first 12 games, but he's since returned to his career norms. He's slashing a poor .186/.252/.363 with four home runs, two steals, 12 RBI, nine runs scored and six doubles over 111 plate appearances. Despite the poor batting, Melendez is still seeing a majority of the playing time in left field, keeping Nelson Velazquez at designated hitter and Dairon Blanco on the bench. • Taking seat Sunday
Renfroe is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rangers.

Advice: Renfroe started the first two games of the series and will head to the bench for the finale after he went 2-for-7 with a homer, a walk and three RBI. Adam Frazier will start in right field and bat eighth Sunday. Rotowire.com Sunday, 9:26 am

    • Homers in Friday's win
Renfroe went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Friday's 7-1 win over the Rangers.

Advice: Renfroe has struggled to get his bat going -- he's 3-for-27 (.111) over his last 10 games. The outfielder has started to lose playing time to Adam Frazier, who was squeezed out of a full-time role at second base when Michael Massey returned from a back injury. Renfroe is slashing a poor .155/.228/.298 with three homers, 11 RBI, eight runs scored and three doubles over 92 plate appearances, so he'll need to put together better performances to continue playing regularly. • Returns from IL
The Yankees reinstated Berti (groin) from the injured list Saturday.

Advice: Berti will return to the active roster after playing in three rehab games at Double-A Somerset, going 1-for-9 with three walks and a run scored while also stealing a base. His return gives New York additional depth at numerous positions and will cause Taylor Trammell to be designated for assignment in order to create a roster spot. Rotowire.com Saturday, 7:13 am

    • Yankees activate Berti (groin) off injured list
Yankees activated INF Jon Berti off the 10-day injured list.

Advice: Berti is back to provide a bench option for the Yankees after missing three weeks with his left adductor strain. To make room, New York designated Taylor Trammell for assignment. Rotoworld Saturday, 7:07 am

    • Hunter Renfroe swats homer as KC beats Texas
Hunter Renfroe homered and walked in a rout of the Rangers on Friday.

Advice: Renfroe got the Royals on the board with a solo shot in the fifth off an otherwise-excellent Michael Lorenzen. The outfielder has gone deep three times in his first season with Kansas City, but the .155/.228/.298 line tells the story of how ineffective he’s been in the first month-plus. • Getting second opinion
Manager Alex Cora said Friday that Yoshida will get a second opinion on his strained left thumb, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.

Advice: Cora previously said Thursday that Yoshida may need to undergo surgery on his thumb after straining it during Sunday's win over the Cubs, but the 30-year-old will wait to hear from another doctor before determining the best course of action. Yoshida has slashed .275/.348/.388 with 11 RBI across 89 plate appearances this season, and an update on his status should be available within the next several days. • Masataka Yoshida might require thumb surgery
Red Sox manager Alex Cora indicated Thursday that Masataka Yoshida could wind up requiring surgery on his injured left thumb.

Advice: There’s significant concern that Yoshida could wind up requiring an extended absence as the Red Sox continue gathering medical information after he landed on the injured list earlier this week with a left thumb strain. The 30-year-old slugger, who has transitioned to designated hitter almost exclusively this season, underwent an MRI earlier this week and the club has declined to provide an update on his status. There should be some clarity on whether he’ll require surgery at some point later this week. Rotoworld Thursday, 2:20 pm
