    • Astros release 1B Jose Abreu
      Astros released 1B Jose Abreu.

Advice: The 37-year-old from Cuba has accomplished a lot in his career. Abreu is a three-time All-Star, three-time Silver Slugger award winner, won the Rookie of the Year award in 2014 and Most Valuable Player award in 2020. It’s undeniable that his production has fallen off a cliff over the last two seasons, though. Abreu hit .237/.296/.383 in 141 games last year and his average fell to .124 in 113 at-bats this year. He’s in the second year of a three-year $58.3 million deal, but the Astros recognized the sunk cost and will be on the hook for the remainder of the money still owed to Abreu. • Cut loose by Astros
The Astros released Abreu on Friday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

Advice: Abreu was in the second year of a three-year, $58.5 million contract with Houston but will hit the open market after a dreadful start to the 2024 season. In 120 big-league plate appearances, Abreu posted a .362 OPS with a career-worst 23.3 percent K rate and a 3.4 percent walk rate. Amid his struggles, Abreu spent nearly a month in the minors, beginning at the Astros' FCL affiliate before being brought up to Triple-A Sugar Land, where he went hitless in seven at-bats. Although the 37-year-old didn't show much to indicate improvements are coming, he's still just three years removed from a 30-homer season and is a former AL MVP, making him an intriguing reclamation project as a free agent. • In lineup against lefty
Lowe started at first base and went 1-for-4 in Tuesday's 15-2 loss to the Dodgers.

Advice: Lowe, who had been held out of the starting lineup against the previous three left-handed starters the Rangers faced, was in the starting nine against lefty James Paxton. In those previous three games, Ezequiel Duran started at first base, but he was used at shortstop while Josh Smith was given a break and Corey Seager (hamstring) was unavailable. It's unclear if Lowe's start Tuesday signals that he's back in against lefties, or if it was a special case to give Smith a rest day. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 4:39 am

    • Idle Tuesday
Abreu isn't in the Astros' lineup versus the Giants on Tuesday.

Advice: Prior to being absent from the lineup Tuesday, Abreu had made six straight starts and had made appearances in nine consecutive games, going 5-for-29 over the latter span. With the 37-year-old getting a breather, Jon Singleton will start at first and bat fifth. Rotowire.com Tuesday, 4:08 pm

    • Delivers lone run
Lowe went 0-for-2 with a walk, a sacrifice fly and an RBI in Saturday's 3-1 loss to the Giants.

Advice: Lowe delivered the Rangers' lone run with a sacrifice fly in the first inning. It was just his fifth RBI over the last 17 games. The slumping first baseman was recently removed from starting lineups against left-handers and is batting .207 (12-for-58) over the last 19 contests. Rotowire.com Jun 9, 6:47 am
