  • Experiencing thumb soreness
    Scherzer said Monday that he exited Sunday's start with thumb soreness, Kenndi Landry of MLB.com reports.

    Advice: The Rangers are monitoring the situation and have no plans yet to move his next start scheduled for Friday. "We'll see how he's doing," Texas manager Bruce Bochy said. "I'm not surprised he's a little sore." Scherzer was scheduled for a light bullpen session Tuesday, and it's unclear if he was able to make that in-between starts preparation.   • Mauled by Mets
    Cole (0-1) took the loss Tuesday as the Yankees fell 9-7 to the Mets, surrendering six runs on seven hits -- including four home runs -- and four walks over four innings. He failed to strike out a batter.

    Advice: Making his second start of the season after recovering from an elbow issue, Cole simply couldn't locate his pitches as he served up four or more long balls for only the second time in his career -- the other such start came against the Twins in June 2022. The veteran right-hander did throw 72 pitches (44 strikes) Tuesday, up from 62 in his season debut as the Yankees gradually increase his workload.   • Yields homer in non-save spot
    Hader allowed a solo home run and a walk with three strikeouts during Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Rockies.

    Advice: Hader stepped into the game for the ninth inning despite not being eligible for the save and gave up his first home run since June 9 to Michael Toglia. After a shaky start to 2024, Hader owns a 2.25 ERA with 30 strikeouts and eight saves over his last 19 appearances. He's also walking batters at his lowest clip since 2019, with 2.4 BB/9 in 2024.   • Homers, scores three times in loss
    Henderson went 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and three runs scored in a 10-8 loss to the Guardians on Tuesday.

    Advice: Henderson hit a two-run home run in the first inning then walked and scored in the third. He later singled and scored in the seventh frame and added another walk in the eighth. Henderson registered his seventh-multi hit game in June and is now slashing .333/.436/.667 with seven home runs and 14 RBI this month.   • Cole: velocity dip versus Mets intentional
    Gerrit Cole said after Tuesday’s start that he’s healthy and that he intentionally dialed back his velocity tonight after a long first inning.

    Advice: Cole topped out at 98.9 mph in the first tonight, but he was often throwing 92-93 mph in the second. He did pick it up some in the end, throwing his final fastball 95.3 mph, but it was an awfully discouraging performance. It’s good to know he doesn’t think he’s hurt, though.   • Cole allows four home runs in loss
    Gerrit Cole allowed six runs on seven hits in four innings in a loss to the Mets on Tuesday.

    Advice: There’s a fair amount to be concerned about here. The Yankees ace walked four and struck out nobody on the day. His fastball sat 95.4 mph on the day which was down 1.3 mph from his first start. He hit 98 mph in the first inning but by the third inning, he threw only four fastballs and just one was over 94 mph. Home runs hit by Mark Vientos and Harrison Bader were on fastballs that were 91.5 and 93.2 mph. Given that Cole’s elbow injury to start the year involved some nerve issues, there’s a concern that there remains a lingering impact on Cole’s health or performance. It could also just be one bad start, but this is the second outing of his career that he did not strike out any batters and the other was on May 20, 2016, so it’s certainly a performance we want to take note of.     Gunnar Henderson went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer on Tuesday in the Orioles’ loss to the Guardians.

    Advice: Henderson took Guardians lefty Logan Allen deep in the opening frame for his 25th big fly of the season as part of another multi-hit performance. The 22-year-old franchise cornerstone has lived up to fantasy managers’ lofty expectations entering the year by delivering a robust .282/.383/.607 triple-slash line with 69 runs scored, 25 homers, 55 RBI and 13 steals over 78 contests.     Rangers GM Chris Young said Tuesday that Jung (wrist) is dealing with tendon inflammation and classified a potential return on the current road trip, which runs through Sunday in Baltimore, as "ambitious," Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning Newsreports.

    Advice: The 26-year-old was shut down for the weekend after experiencing residual soreness in his surgically repaired right wrist, and he returned to Texas to be evaluated further Tuesday. Young indicated the expectation is that Jung's inflammation could subside within a few days, so the third baseman's return from the injured list may not be pushed back signficantly.     Advice: The 26-year-old was shut down over the weekend after experiencing residual soreness in his surgically repaired right wrist, and he apparently wasn't able to resume taking live batting practice Monday as hoped. Bochy didn't rule out a return before the end of the current road trip that wraps up this weekend in Baltimore, but for now, Jung's immediate outlook is up in the air as he gets checked out.
