• Goes seven innings in no-decision
Verlander pitched seven innings in a no-decision against the Guardians on Wednesday, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks while striking out two.

Advice: Verlander allowed the leadoff man to reach in four of his seven innings of work, but managed to limit the damage to only two runs, both of which came across in the top of the fifth. The veteran right-hander struggled to get ahead in the count for much of the contest and has now issued at least three walks in back-to-back starts, though he's still held opposing teams to two or fewer runs in all three outings to open the campaign. Wednesday also marked Verlander's first start this season in which he's gone at least seven innings. Rotowire.com Today, 4:20 am
  • Set for second rehab outing
Bradley (pectoral) will throw his second rehab outing with Triple-A Durham on Saturday or Sunday, MLB.com reports.

Advice: Bradley was sharp in his first rehab appearance and ramped up to 65 pitches while completing five scoreless innings of work. If he can increase his workload during his weekend start, it's possible that he could be activated from the injured list by mid-May. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 11:34 pm

  • Justin Verlander pitches well in Astros loss
Justin Verlander allowed two runs with two strikeouts over seven innings in a no-decision against the Guardians on Wednesday.

Advice: Verlander had worked around four hits and two walks through four scoreless innings until the Guardians got to him in the fifth. Will Brennan led off the inning with a solo homer to put Cleveland on the board. A walk and triple brought one more run across before Verlander escaped the frame. He tossed two more innings for the quality start, striking out two batters. The 41-year-old right-hander ends the day with a 2.08 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and a 13/7 K/BB ratio across 17 1/3 innings. He’s set for a matchup against the Yankees in New York on Tuesday. Rotoworld Yesterday, 7:57 pm
  • Without timeline for mound work
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that Cole had a "heavy day" of throwing off flat ground Tuesday, but the skipper is unsure when the right-hander will be ready to throw a bullpen session, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Cole has been playing catch multiple times per week for about two weeks while steadily increasing his throwing distance. He hasn't hit any reported snags in his recovery since resuming his throwing program, but it's not yet clear when Cole will be able to take the next meaningful step forward in his recovery from his right elbow injury by getting back on the mound. Boone also declined to speculate if a return before the All-Star break is realistic for Cole, who is eligible to be activated May 25 after opening the season on the 60-day injured list. • Reaches six innings
Skenes allowed four hits and one walk while striking out seven across six scoreless innings Tuesday in an appearance with Triple-A Indianapolis.

Advice: Skenes continued his impressive run with Indianapolis, as he now has a total of 41 strikeouts across 23 innings pitched while maintaining a 0.39 ERA and 0.87 WHIP. Most importantly, he reached five innings in an outing for the first time in a start this season and tossed 75 pitches. The Pirates still haven't announced plans to promote Skenes to Pittsburgh, but he should be up in relatively short order. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 12:22 am

  • Lands six-out win
Hader (1-2) earned the win Tuesday, allowing one unearned run on one hit and one walk with four strikeouts over two innings against the Guardians.

Advice: Hader surrendered a double to David Fry in the 10th inning that plated designated runner Josh Naylor as the go-ahead run. Still, Hader ended up with his first victory of the campaign following a Victor Caratini walk-off homer in the home half of the frame. After a bounce-back 2023 season, Hader looks to have regressed to his poor 2022 form (5.22 ERA across 56 appearances), producing a 6.39 ERA across the first 12.2 innings of his Astros tenure. • Paul Skenes twirls six shutout frames at Triple-A
Pirates RHP prospect Paul Skenes struck out seven over six shutout innings on Tuesday for Triple-A Indianapolis.

Advice: Skenes touched triple digits 13 times, averaging 99.8 mph on his four-seam fastball, and needed just 75 pitches (53 strikes) to complete six frames for the first time in his professional career. He generated 11 swinging strikes and finished with a 31 percent CSW, allowing only five baserunners over six dominant innings. We’re not sure what else Pittsburgh’s front office needs to see at this juncture. The 21-year-old top pitching prospect boasts a microscopic 0.39 ERA and 41/6 K/BB ratio across 23 innings (six starts). It’s time. Rotoworld Tuesday, 4:45 pm

  • Gerrit Cole (elbow) continues flat-ground throwing
Gerrit Cole (elbow) continued flat-ground throwing on Tuesday.

Advice: Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters everything is going well with Cole’s throwing program, but the 33-year-old righty remains without a set date to resume throwing off a mound. The assumption remains that he’ll be ready to make his season debut at some point in late May. Rotoworld Tuesday, 1:57 pm

  • Rehab start delayed
Scherzer's (back) rehab start with Double-A Frisco on Tuesday will be pushed back due to thumb soreness, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.

Advice: The thumb issue apparently surfaced following Scherzer's start with Triple-A Round Rock on April 24, so he'll have his next outing pushed back. Rangers general manager Chris Young hopes the veteran right-hander will be ready to pitch by the end of the week, so Scherzer's thumb injury doesn't appear to be a serious issue.
