  • Corbin Burnes defeats Red Sox to improve to 5-2
    Corbin Burnes picked up his fifth victory of the season on Wednesday night, limiting the Red Sox to just one unearned run on three hits over seven strong frames.

    Advice: Burnes racked up five strikeouts on the night while issuing two free passes. The lone tally against him came via a one-out single, throwing error, errant pickoff throw and ground ball combination in the second inning. The 29-year-old hurler got 16 swings and misses on 108 pitches on the night, posting a CSW of 28 percent.   • Falls to St. Louis
    Montas (2-4) took the loss Wednesday against the Cardinals, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out five.

    Advice: Montas earned his first quality start in his last four outings, though he'd still wind up with the loss as the Reds couldn't break through on offense until the seventh inning. The 31-year-old Montas hasn't earned a win since April 3 after starting the year 2-0. His ERA sits at 4.60 with a 1.40 WHIP and 33:18 K:BB over 10 starts (47 innings) this season.     Frankie Montas lost Wednesday after allowing three runs in six innings against the Cardinals.

    Advice: Gausman was sharp Tuesday, yielding one run and fewer than five hits for a second straight start to tally his fourth win in his last six outings. However, he snapped a streak of four consecutive outings with six or more Ks and yielded three extra-base hits. Gausman has allowed one or fewer earned runs in six of his last eight starts but owns a 4.14 ERA on the year. He's tentatively scheduled for a start against Baltimore on Monday.     Kevin Gausman allowed one earned and four hits over six innings while earning the win on Tuesday against the White Sox.

    Advice: Gausman didn’t face much resistance in this one, as the Blue Jays grabbed an early 3-0 lead in the second, which more or less put Gausman in cruise control against one of the league’s worst offenses. Gausman earned a win in three of his five stars this month, and will have a chance to start June off on a strong note when he makes his next scheduled start on Monday against the Orioles.   • Merrill Kelly (shoulder) set to resume throwing
    Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Tuesday that Merrill Kelly (shoulder) will start a throwing program next week.

    Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Tuesday that Kelly (shoulder) is expected to begin a throwing program next week, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.

    Advice: The right-hander has apparently been progressing well in his recovery from a right shoulder strain and is now on the cusp of resuming baseball work. Kelly will require some time to build his arm up before progressing to mound work and eventually a rehab assignment, so he shouldn't be expected to rejoin the Diamondbacks until sometime in July.     Miller (4-5) earned the win over Houston on Monday, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out six batters over six innings.

    Advice: Miller came into the contest having lost three consecutive outings, during which he posted a 5.71 ERA. The right-hander bounced back with his sixth quality start of the season and his sixth outing with at least six strikeouts.   • Keeps rolling for 16th save
    Suarez earned a save against the Marlins on Monday, striking out one batter in a perfect inning of work.

    Advice: Suarez was summoned in the ninth frame to protect a one-run lead and had no trouble doing so, retiring the side in order on 14 pitches. The right-hander came into the campaign with a loose grip on the ninth-inning role for the Padres but has emerged as one of the league's top first-half closers with 16 saves (in 16 chances) while posting a 0.73 ERA, 0.69 WHIP and 24:5 K:BB over 24.2 innings.
