  • Struggles again Thursday
    Rodon (9-5) took the loss against Toronto on Thursday, allowing eight runs on 10 hits and one walk while striking out eight batters over five innings.

    Advice: Rodon was shellshocked in the first frame, giving up five runs before recording an out. He gave up three more runs in the second, all of which came on George Springer's second three-run homer of the game. Rodon at least managed to hang on for five innings to avoid depleting the Yankees' bullpen, but the damage was more than enough to result in his third straight loss. Rodon has allowed 20 earned runs across 13.2 frames during the losing streak, catapulting his season ERA up from 2.92 to 4.42. Rotowire.com Thursday, 11:33 pm
     
  • Cakewalks to ninth win
    Burnes (9-3) earned the victory over Texas on Thursday, allowing one run on nine hits and no walks while striking out five batters over seven innings.

    Advice: The Orioles were up 3-0 after one inning and 6-0 after three, so Burnes didn't face much pressure in the outing. The right-hander did tie a season-worst mark in allowing nine hits, but only one of those -- a fourth-inning Adolis Garcia solo homer -- went for extra bases. Burnes recorded a quality start after snapping a 10-game streak of such performances in his previous outing. He's tied for the MLB lead in that category with 13 on the campaign and has posted excellent numbers in his first season as an Oriole with a 2.28 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 99:24 K:BB over 106.2 innings.   • Rodon hit hard again, allows eight runs in loss
    Carlos Rodon allowed eight runs in five innings and took the loss against the Blue Jays on Thursday.



    Advice: Rodon gave up 10 hits, walked one and struck out eight. That Rodon was able to complete five innings and strike out eight batters were positives, but if fantasy managers weren’t concerned about him before this start, they certainly are now. Rodon has allowed at least five runs in each of his last three starts and seen his ERA rise from 2.93 to 4.42. Rodon isn’t a big time strikeout pitcher like he was in his pre-Yankees career. His strikeout percentage is 23 percent this year compared to his 33 percent strikeout percentage with the Giants in 2022. Rodon had a 3.17 xFIP in 2021 with the White Sox and 2.91 xFIP in 2022 before his disaster 5.30 xFIP in his first year with the Yankees last year. His 4.34 xFIP this year is an improvement, but was also a sign that his ERA wasn’t going to remain below 3.00. This version of Rodon is also easier to hit as his 0.88 HR/9 in 2021 and 0.61 HR/9 in 2022 have turned into a 2.10 HR/9 in 2023 and a 1.54 HR/9 this year with the Yankees. There’s no way around the fact that Rodon’s $162 million pact with New York has become one of the biggest bust signings in the franchise’s long free agent history. The 31-year-old left-hander is set to face the Reds at home next week, but fantasy managers have to think about sending him to the bench if he wasn’t there already.

  • Burnes picks up ninth win in route Thursday
    Corbin Burnes allowed one run in seven innings and got the win in the Orioles’ 11-2 victory over the Rangers on Monday.



    Advice: Burnes gave up nine hits, walked none and struck out five. The win was his ninth of the year. Burnes was on cruise control in this one. Despite the nine hits, he allowed just one run on a solo home run off the bat of Adolis Garcia. Burnes lowered his ERA to 2.28 in the process. The 29-year-old right-hander is set to face the Mariners on the road next week.

  • Alex Cobb will throw a bullpen on Friday
    According to the San Francisco Chronicle’s Shayna Rubin, Alex Cobb (shoulder) will throw a bullpen on Friday.

    Advice: Cobb has been out all season with a shoulder injury. He had been nearing a return before pausing his throwing program in the middle of May. He’s now ramping back up again and, if all goes well on Friday, he will have a rehab assignment with Triple-A San Jose after.

  • Rehab assignment coming
    Cobb (hip/shoulder) will throw a bullpen session Friday and could begin a rehab assignment with Single-A San Jose afterward if everything goes smoothly, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

    Advice: Cobb has been trending in the right direction since being shut down in May due to soreness in his right (throwing) shoulder. However, he still needs to build back up to a starter's workload after spending all season on the injured list, so he likely won't return to the Giants' rotation until after the All-Star break.   • In midst of rehab assignment
    Roupp (undisclosed) made his third rehab appearance in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League on Wednesday, striking out four over two perfect innings.

    Advice: Roupp has resided on Triple-A Sacramento's 7-day injured list since May 24 with an unspecified injury, but he looks to be close to a return to action in the Pacific Coast League. He's cruised through his first three outings in the ACL, punching out 12 while not issuing a walk and allowing just two hits over five shutout innings. The injury came at an unfortunate time for Roupp, who possesses a spot on the Giants' 40-man roster and might have been under consideration to join the injury-riddled big-league rotation had he been healthy.   • Making progress in throwing program
    Blackburn (foot) threw a bullpen session Tuesday at Angel Stadium and is set to complete another one Saturday, MLB.com reports.

    Advice: The right-hander has been making steady progress over the last week-plus, as he's already thrown two bullpen sessions and has seemingly come away from that activity without setbacks.     Gallen (hamstring) could be activated from the 15-day injured list to start Saturday against Oakland if he recovers well from Thursday's bullpen session, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

    Advice: Thursday's bullpen session will be the second one thrown by Gallen, who also has a couple of simulated games under his belt since he landed on the injured list.
