      Criswell (3-3) yielded four runs (three earned) on five hits and a walk over 4.1 innings Friday, striking out two and taking a loss against the White Sox.

      Advice: Criswell gave up one run through three frames before the White Sox plated three runs in the fourth inning. It was the third time in his last five outings that he's failed to complete at least five innings. During that stretch, he's posted a 6.45 ERA, driving his season number up to 4.13.       Cooper Criswell lost to the White Sox after allowing four runs — three earned — in 4 1/3 innings on Friday.

      Advice: Criswell entered the night 3-2 with a 3.92 ERA, but by rule, this counts as three losses on his record. After a promising first month with the Red Sox, he’s given up 19 runs — 16 earned — in 22 1/3 innings in his last five outings.       Mitch Keller threw six shutout innings and got the win in the Pirates’ 3-0 victory over the Twins on Friday.



      Advice: Keller gave up seven hits, walked two and struck out eight. The win was his eighth of the season. Keller has now won six starts in a row and all of them have been quality starts. His ERA is 1.13 over his last six starts with a .226 average allowed. Keller now has a 3.16 ERA and SO:BB of 74:22 in 13 starts this year. The 28-year-old right-hander is set to face the Cardinals on the road next week.

      Eflin didn't factor into the decision Wednesday against the Marlins, allowing two runs on three hits and no walks across four innings. He struck out three.

      Advice: Eflin was activated from the 15-day IL for Wednesday's start and was yanked after 55 pitches. He was expected to be under a pitch count after being stretched out to only 40 pitches during his recovery from a back injury. The 30-year-old had to shake off a little rust, allowing all three hits and both runs in the first inning before retiring nine straight batters to close out the start.     • Zach Eflin goes four innings in return from IL
      Zach Eflin pitched well in his return from the injured list on Wednesday, allowing two runs on three hits over four frames in a no-decision against the Marlins.

      Advice: Eflin struck out three batters on the evening and didn’t allow a base on balls. The Marlins scored a pair of two-out runs against him in the opening inning on an RBI double by Jesus Sanchez and an RBI single by Otto Lopez. He settled in nicely afterwards though and blanked the Fish over his final three innings. The 30-year-old hurler got five whiffs on 55 pitches in the contest, posting a CSW of only 18 percent.     • Aaron Nola fires seven scoreless to beat Brewers
      Aaron Nola fired seven shutout innings on Wednesday in a win over the Brewers.

      Advice: Nola scattered a pair of hits and recorded five strikeouts on Wednesday afternoon at Citizens Bank Park, combining with relievers Jeff Hoffman and José Alvarado on a three-hit shutout. The 31-year-old righty has been a model of consistency over the last few weeks, allowing two earned runs or fewer in five consecutive starts since May 14. He’ll carry a strong 2.77 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 76/22 K/BB ratio across 84 1/3 innings (13 starts) into a road tilt next Thursday against the Red Sox at historic Fenway Park.       The Rays reinstated Eflin (back) from the 15-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday versus the Marlins in Miami.

      Advice: Tampa Bay optioned right-hander Justin Sterner to Triple-A Durham to clear the way for Eflin's return to the 26-man active roster. Eflin missed just over the minimum 15 days while recovering from lower-back inflammation, and the Rays signed off on him returning from the IL without a rehab assignment after he completed a 40-pitch, two-inning simulated bullpen session Sunday. According to MLB.com, manager Kevin Cash suggested that Eflin could face some limitations with his workload Wednesday, but the Rays will wait and see how the right-hander fares as the game unfolds before making any decisions on whether to cut his start short.
