    • Roughed up in loss
Montgomery (6-5) was saddled with the loss Thursday, allowing eight runs (four earned) on nine hits and one walk over 2.2 innings against the Twins. He struck out one.

Advice: Montgomery's line could have been a lot worse if not for a catcher's interference call and a throwing error accounting for half of the eight total runs he allowed. Among the nine hits allowed were three infield singles, no homers and two extra-base hits for Montgomery, suggesting that this performance was marred by a bit of bad luck. After struggling to 14 earned runs allowed over six innings during consecutive starts on May 31 and June 5, Montgomery had righted the ship over the next three outings prior to Thursday, allowing just five earned runs over 16.2 innings and collecting the win in each. His next start won't get any easier as he's presently slated to face the Dodgers in Los Angeles during a mid-week series. Rotowire.com 29 minutes ago
    • Jack Flaherty tagged for three homers in loss
Jack Flaherty lost to the Angels after allowing five runs in 5 2/3 innings on Thursday.

Advice: Flaherty surrendered three homers, matching his total from his previous six starts combined. He struck out seven and walked just one, but there was no overcoming the longball in this one. It’s the first time since Apr. 24 that he’s allowed more than three runs. Rotoworld Today, 10:45 pm
    • Goes deep, swipes bag in win
Hoerner went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run and a stolen base in Thursday's 5-3, 10-inning win over the Giants.

Advice: Hoerner blasted his third home run of the season in the third inning with a runner on and also stole his 14th base of the year The infielder is not known as a big power threat, as his career best in homers for a season is only 10, but he is a capable baserunner. Hoerner swiped a career-high 43 bases last year, and he had 20 stolen bases in 2022. Fantasy managers will hope he continues to run frequently the rest of the way. Rotowire.com Today, 7:31 pm

    • Vlad Jr. hits double, home run in win over Yankees
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, a double, a home run and two RBI against the Yankees on Thursday.

Advice: Guerrero Jr. started the scoring with an RBI double in the first inning and his solo home run in the sixth inning gave the Blue Jays a 9-2 lead. He’s hit a home run in four of his last six games and is 11-for-27 (.407) with 12 RBI in that time. Guerrero Jr. is hitting .289 with 11 home runs and 42 RBI on the season.

    • Nico Hoerner homers, steals base in victory
Nico Hoerner went 3-for-5 with a homer and a stolen base for the Cubs in an extra-inning win over the Giants on Thursday.

Advice: Hoerner swatted a two-run blast off Jordan Hicks in the third inning to give the Cubs a 2-0 lead. That’s only the third homer of the season for the 27-year-old, but the steal was already the 14th of the year. Hoerner missed time with a hairline fracture in his hand, and he’s a good bet to see a much higher average than the .246 mark he’s put up thus far in the second half. Rotoworld Today, 4:51 pm

    • Jordan Hicks strikes out seven, allows three vs. Cubs
Jordan Hicks gave up three runs in five innings while striking out seven against the Cubs on Thursday, but he didn’t factor into the decision.

Advice: All three runs were given up in the third, as he gave up a two-run homer to Nico Hoerner and an RBI triple to Seiya Suzuki. The right-hander was strong outside of that frame while showing off his swing-and-miss stuff. In his first season with the Giants, Hicks had a 3.36 ERA, 76/33 K/BB and 1.28 WHIP across 85 1/3 innings in his 17 starts. Rotoworld Today, 4:51 pm

    • Jordan Montgomery roughed up in loss to Twins
Jordan Montgomery allowed eight runs — four earned — in just 2 2/3 innings in a loss to the Twins on Thursday.

Advice: Obviously the defense didn’t help Montgomery, but don’t confuse unearned runs with effectiveness. The southpaw gave up nine hits while only picking up a single strikeout with one walk as well. The 2024 season has been a massive disappointment for Montgomery and those who roster him on their fantasy rosters, and even with four unearned runs, this effort pushed his ERA to an ugly 6.03. Things don’t get any easier with the Dodgers scheduled next week. Rotoworld Today, 4:45 pm
    • Resting against southpaw
Kepler is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Diamondbacks.

Advice: Kepler will be joined on the bench by fellow left-handed hitter Trevor Larnach as the Twins add a pair of right-handed bats (Manuel Margot and Kyle Farmer) to the lineup to counter Diamondbacks southpaw Jordan Montgomery. Expect Kepler to rejoin the starting nine for the Twins' series opener in Seattle on Friday, when right-hander Logan Gilbert is scheduled to take the hill for the Mariners. • Saturday start being discussed
Gallen (hamstring) could start Saturday against Oakland if Thursday's bullpen session goes well, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports.

Advice: Thursday's bullpen session will be the second one thrown by Gallen, who also has a couple of simulated games under his belt since he landed on the injured list. The right-hander hasn't thrown in game conditions since May 30, when he threw just six pitches against the Mets before being removed due to the hamstring strain. Rotowire.com Today, 5:36 am
