      Pivetta (4-5) took the loss Friday, coughing up five runs on seven hits and a walk over four-plus innings in a 9-2 loss to the Padres. He struck out four.

      Advice: The right-hander was cruising through four innings, but San Diego erupted for all nine of its runs in the fifth before Boston's pitching staff was able to secure an out. Pivetta served up a two-run homer to Kyle Higashioka to begin that offensive outburst, and he's been taken deep five times in his last three starts, stumbling to a 6.46 ERA and 1.63 WHIP over that stretch despite a 13:3 K:BB in 15.1 innings.     • Nick Pivetta tagged for five runs by Padres
      Nick Pivetta surrendered five runs in four-plus innings Friday in a loss to the Padres.

      Advice: Pivetta pitched four scoreless innings, striking out four, before giving up four straight hits and a walk to begin the fifth. He was pulled at that point, and the Padres ended up scoring nine times in the frame. Pivetta has allowed 15 earned runs over 19 1/3 innings in his last four starts, taking his season ERA from 3.40 to 4.52.       McArthur pitched a perfect ninth inning and picked up the save over the Guardians on Thursday.

      Advice: McArthur entered the game with a one-run lead in the ninth and needed only eight pitches to retire the side for his 14th save of the season. The right-hander has been very reliable as of late, hurling a perfect inning in each of his last three appearances while lowering his June ERA to 2.00. On the downside, McArthur has managed just a 4:4 K:BB this month over 10 appearances (nine innings) and hasn't recorded a strikeout in either of his last two outings.       Hicks did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing three runs on five hits, two walks and a hit batsman against the Cubs. He struck out seven.

      Advice: Hicks' outing was marred by a rough third inning in which he hit a batter, allowed two steals and gave up a homer and triple among three hits during the three-run frame. Otherwise, Hicks faced just two batters over the minimum during the other four innings, recording at least seven strikeouts for the fourth time this season.       James McArthur tossed a scoreless ninth inning and picked up the save against the Guardians on Thursday.

      Advice: The save was his 14th of the season. McArthur has a 4.41 ERA after another scoreless outing. There’s no question that he’s the Royals’ best option for saves going forward. Rotoworld Thursday, 7:36 pm

      Jordan Hicks gave up three runs in five innings while striking out seven against the Cubs on Thursday, but he didn’t factor into the decision.

      Advice: All three runs were given up in the third, as he gave up a two-run homer to Nico Hoerner and an RBI triple to Seiya Suzuki. The right-hander was strong outside of that frame while showing off his swing-and-miss stuff.     • Bags 13th save
      Phillips earned the save in Tuesday's 4-3 win over the White Sox, pitching a perfect inning with one strikeout.

      Advice: Phillips entered the ninth with a one-run lead and promptly retired the side on 14 pitches, including 10 strikes. The 29-year-old right-hander has been steady in June so far, pitching to a 3.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 8:2 K:BB over nine innings with five saves.       McArthur earned a save against the Marlins on Monday, striking out one batter in a perfect inning of work.

      Advice: McArthur entered in the ninth frame with Kansas City up by three runs and made quick work of Miami, retiring the side in order on 10 pitches. That netted him his first save since June 6 and his 13th overall this season. McArthur's 18-day span between saves was of no fault of his own -- he didn't see any save opportunities during that stretch, and the only save by any KC pitcher during that period came in a game during which McArthur was used in a high-leverage spot and ended up with the victory.       Phillips earned a hold against the White Sox on Monday, allowing one hit in a scoreless inning of work.

      Advice: It was somewhat surprising to see Phillips -- who is the Dodgers' primary closer -- used in the eighth frame, but there was plenty of sense behind the move given that the White Sox were bringing up the heart of their order. Phillips got through the inning unscathed despite allowing a one-out double to Luis Robert, and Alex Vesia earned his fourth save with a clean frame in the ninth. Phillips' usage Monday suggests that manager Dave Roberts isn't opposed to using him before the ninth inning in the highest-leverage situations, but the right-hander should still receive the vast majority of save chances for Los Angeles. He's been one of the most reliable closers in baseball this year with a perfect 12-for-12 mark in save opportunities along with a 1.66 ERA and 1.02 WHIP. Rotowire.com Monday, 9:50 pm
