    • Max Scherzer not starting for Rangers on Saturday
Rangers’ manager Bruce Bochy announced Friday that Jon Gray will start on Saturday against the Royals.

Advice: There had been speculation that Max Scherzer would make his 2024 season debut on Saturday, but it’ll be Gray getting the ball instead. Bochy was quick to point out that Scherzer has not had any sort of setback and could still return to start Sunday’s series finale against the Royals. Stay tuned. Rotoworld 18 minutes ago

    • Starting Saturday
Gray will start Saturday's game against the Royals, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Gray was scheduled to throw Monday at Milwaukee on seven days rest, but he'll have his start bumped up to Saturday to give Max Scherzer (thumb/back) extra rest. Gray had surrendered two or fewer runs 12 consecutive starts before being rocked for nine runs in three innings against the Mets on Monday. He yielded two runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts across seven innings in a start against the Royals on May 5. Rotowire.com 30 minutes ago

    • Return pushed back
Scherzer (back/thumb) won't start Saturday's game against the Royals, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Scherzer was initially reported to make his season debut Saturday after recovering from offseason back surgery and dealing with thumb and forearm injuries more recently. Instead, Bruce Bochy will hand the ball to Jon Gray on Saturday, with starters for Sunday's series finale against Kansas City and Monday's series opener against Milwaukee to be determined. Scherzer and Dane Dunning figure to fill the two starting slots, though it's unclear in what order. Rotowire.com 34 minutes ago

    • Notches eighth victory
Stone (8-2) earned the win over Colorado on Thursday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out seven batters over 5.1 innings.

Advice: Stone performed well in the Colorado altitude, as none of the four hits against him went for extra bases. The right-hander was working on a shutout through five frames but fell off in the sixth inning, loading the bases with one out on a pair of walks and a single before getting the hook. Two of those three runners scored after his departure, but that didn't prevent Stone from registering the win. The 25-year-old has become a key part of Los Angeles' rotation in his first full MLB campaign, leading the team with eight victories while posting a 3.04 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 63:25 K:BB over 80 innings. • Stone gives up two runs in win over Rockies
Gavin Stone allowed two runs in 5 1/3 innings and got the win in the Dodgers’ 5-3 victory over the Rockies on Thursday.

Advice: Stone gave up four hits, walked two and struck out seven. Both runs came on a Jake Cave two-run single in the sixth inning. The win was Stone’s eighth of the year and he’s now won four of his last five starts. He’s also struck out at least six batters in four of his last five starts. The 25-year-old right-hander is set to face the White Sox on the road next week. Rotoworld Yesterday, 2:53 pm

    • Solid in season debut
Cole (elbow) didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 7-6 loss to the Orioles, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk with five strikeouts over four innings.

Advice: Cole surrendered a run on an RBI double by Ryan O'Hearn in the first inning then settled in over the next three frames. He allowed a single to Cedric Mullins to open the fifth and was pulled after throwing 62 pitches, but Mullins scored on a home run surrendered by Yankees reliever Ron Marinaccio. Cole maxed out at 68 pitches during his minor-league rehab assignment, so the Yankees seemed to ease him back in for his 2024 MLB debut. He should increase his workload in his second start of the season early next week against the Mets. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 8:56 pm

    • Gerrit Cole allows two runs in four-plus innings
Gerrit Cole lasted for four-plus innings in his return to the Yankees on Wednesday against the Orioles. He struck out five, walked one, and allowed two earned runs in a loss.

Advice: Cole was not his sharpest, understandably, in this one. The Orioles are a tough matchup and they made lots of loud contact as Cole struggled with command, especially with his knuckle curve. The Yankees limited him to just 62 pitches in this one and he’ll have a chance to right the ship next week against the Mets. Rotoworld Wednesday, 8:15 pm

    • Dodgers officially place Walker Buehler on IL
Dodgers placed RHP Walker Buehler on the 15-day injured list with right hip inflammation.

Advice: Buehler was hit in the hip by a comebacker during Thursday’s bloodbath at Coors Field, so it gives the Dodgers a viable reason to stash him on the injured list for a couple of weeks while he works through some of his struggles. Buehler has pitched to a woeful 5.84 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP over 37 innings in eight starts since returning from the injured list. Bobby Miller was activated from the IL in a corresponding move on Wednesday. Rotoworld Wednesday, 5:06 pm

    • Headed to injured list
Manager Dave Roberts said Buehler will be placed on the injured list Wednesday due to hip discomfort, Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports.

Advice: The right-hander was struck in the hip by a comebacker Tuesday against the Rockies, but he was also battling a hip issue prior to that incident. Buehler surrendered seven runs during Wednesday's outing and has a 5.84 ERA through eight starts this season, and the IL stint will give him a chance to reset amid the struggles. He's without an official timeline for his return but seems likely to be sidelined beyond the 15-day minumum. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 4:20 pm
