    • Secures sixth save
Diaz gave up a hit and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning Friday to record his sixth save of the season in a 2-1 win over the Padres.

Advice: A leadoff single by Jurickson Profar and a stolen base by pinch runner Jose Azocar created another nervous ninth for the Mets, but Diaz buckled down after that and fanned Manny Machado and Jake Cronenworth to preserve the win. Diaz's velocity appears to be all the way back -- his fastest pitch Friday hit 100 mph -- and he's looked to be in just about peak form in two appearances since recovering from a shoulder impingement. The 30-year-old right-hander is just 6-for-10 in converting save chances in 2024, but as long as he's healthy he should be locked in as the Mets' closer. Rotowire.com Today, 7:52 am

    • Edwin Díaz finally gets a save
Edwin Díaz pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the Mets to earn the save on Friday against the Padres. He struck out two and stranded a runner on third base.

Advice: Díaz and the Mets really needed this one. You could hear a pin drop in Citi Field when Jurickson Profar led off the inning with a single, but Díaz was able to work around it for his first save in 39 days. He also hit a true 100 MPH for the first time this season as he looks to get back into a groove as the Mets’ closer. Rotoworld Yesterday, 8:14 pm

    • Nabs win in return
Diaz (2-1) struck out one in a perfect ninth inning Thursday to pick up the win over the Marlins.

Advice: The right-hander looked good in his first appearance since May 25, topping out at 99.6 mph with his fastball. Diaz had been on the IL with a shoulder impingement before being activated Thursday, but he hadn't been his usual dominant self even before getting shut down -- so far in 2024 he has a 16.7 percent whiff rate, one of the lowest marks of his career and a massive drop from the 25.2 percent rate he delivered in 2022. While his results were impressive Thursday, Diaz managed only two swinging strikes on 15 pitches, suggesting that he may not be fully back in form yet. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 8:49 am

    • Back from injured list
The Mets reinstated Diaz (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list Thursday.

Advice: Diaz has been on the injured list since late May due to a right shoulder impingement. He fired two shutout innings with High-A Brooklyn during a rehab assignment, and manager Carlos Mendoza said Wednesday that the Mets will make Diaz their closer once again after the team had used a committee approach leading up to the injury. The 30-year-old righty currently owns a 5.40 ERA and 1.25 WHIP alongside a 30:7 K:BB through 20 innings on the year and has converted five of his nine save opportunities. • Edwin Díaz returns from IL as Mets’ closer
Mets activated RHP Edwin Díaz from the 15-day injured list.

Advice: Díaz is slated to resume closing immediately for the Mets, though the Mets won’t want him to go long without pitching if they don’t generate a save chance these next two days. Díaz missed the minimum 15 days with a shoulder impingement. Rotoworld Thursday, 11:48 am

    • Set to regain closer role
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Wednesday that Diaz (shoulder) will immediately become the team's closer upon his activation from the 15-day injured list Thursday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.

Advice: Diaz had been part of a committee at closer for the Mets prior to landing on the IL with a right shoulder impingement in late May. However, Mendoza is now ready to restore Diaz to his old role beginning with Thursday's contest against the Marlins. Diaz has converted four of his nine save chances this season while holding a 5.40 ERA and 30:7 K:BB over 20 innings. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 1:13 pm

    • Edwin Diaz to jump right back into closer’s role
Mets’ manager Carlos Mendoza confirmed Wednesday that Edwin Diaz will jump right back into the closer’s role upon his return from the injured list on Thursday.

Advice: Mendoza told reporters, “For us to make a run at this, we’re going to need Diaz to be Edwin Diaz.” That means Reed Garrett and Adam Ottavino will shift back into their high-leverage roles in the seventh and eighth innings. Before landing on the injured list with his right shoulder impingement, Diaz had posted a troublesome 5.40 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and a 30/7 K/BB ratio across 20 innings of work through his first 20 appearances on the year. • Set to be activated Thursday
Mets manager Carlos Mendoz said Tuesday that Diaz (shoulder) will be activated from the 15-day injured list Thursday, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports.

Advice: Diaz is done with his rehab assignment after making two scoreless appearances with High-A Brooklyn. However, the Mets will wait a couple more days before returning the reliever to the active roster. Mendoza didn't divulge plans for Diaz's immediate role, but he should serve as the club's closer sooner rather than later. Diaz has been out since late May with a right shoulder impingement. • Mendoza: Edwin Díaz set to return on Thursday
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters Edwin Díaz (shoulder) will be activated on Thursday.

Advice: Díaz struck out three batters in a pair of scoreless relief rehab appearances for High-A Brooklyn and will return to fortify the back-end of New York’s bullpen ahead of Thursday’s series finale against the Marlins. The 30-year-old stopper has been on the shelf since late May recovering from a right shoulder impingement. Rotoworld Tuesday, 1:10 pm
