      Advice: No word yet on an updated timeline, but there are rumblings that the 26-year-old slugger is going to miss at least a couple of months.       Advice: Carpenter was placed on the 10-day injured list earlier this week with what was called lumbar spine inflammation, but further testing appears to have revealed a more significant injury. The Tigers have not divulged a potential timetable for Carpenter's return, but his absence could be a lengthy one. May has been a rough month for Melendez, who has gone 12-for-69 (.174) with six extra-base hits over 23 contests in the month. His previous homer was April 19, and he now has five long balls on the year to go with 13 RBI, 14 runs scored, two stolen bases and a poor .176/.238/.346 slash line through 50 games.       Lane Thomas stole two bases and scored a run in a victory over Atlanta on Thursday.

      Advice: Thomas continues to be one of the better stolen-base threats in the sport, and it’s worth pointing out that his 15 swipes have come in just 26 games. The speed has been there for the 28-year-old. Now, about that .212/.278/.327 slash line.       Reed Garrett hurled a scoreless ninth to get a save Thursday against the Diamondbacks.

      Advice: Garrett has saved three games, and with Edwin Díaz out with a shoulder impingement, that number is likely to go up. Assuming New York wins games, of course.
