    • Taking batting practice
Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Nootbaar (oblique) took batting practice Monday and will do so again Tuesday, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.

Advice: If Nootbaar responds well to the consecutive days of BP, the Cardinals could clear the outfielder to head out on a minor-league rehab assignment later in the week. Though Nootbaar wouldn't seem to be a likely candidate to return from the 10-day injured list for any of the Cardinals' seven games this week, he shouldn't require a lengthy rehab assignment. Alec Burleson has been serving as the Cardinals' primary right fielder in Nootbaar's stead, but Burleson will likely settle back in at designated hitter once Nootbaar is activated. • Rehab assignment getting closer
Nootbaar (oblique) is tracking toward beginning a rehab assignment soon, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.

Advice: Nootbaar has been shelved since late May with a left oblique strain but appears close to being ready to play in games. The outfielder shouldn't need too many rehab games in the minors since he's been on the injured list for just over three weeks. A return before the All-Star break is likely. • Dominates Giants
Gray (9-4) picked up the win Sunday against San Francisco, allowing one run on one hit with no walks across seven innings. He struck out eight.

Advice: Gray took a perfect game into the seventh inning before Patrick Bailey launched a solo home run with two outs. Although the Cardinals' bullpen gave up two more runs, Gray was able to claim his ninth win of 2024, his most wins in a season since 2019. The 34-year-old has completed at least seven innings in three consecutive starts and owns a 2.95 ERA along with an 11.1 K/9 across 83.1 innings. He's on track to face the Reds during a four-game series late next week. Rotowire.com Sunday, 10:45 pm

    • Fernando Tatis Jr. was available off bench Sunday
Padres’ manager Mike Shildt told reporters after Sunday’s loss to the Brewers that Fernando Tatis Jr. (triceps, quad) was available off the bench.

Advice: The Padres were simply waiting for the right opportunity to present itself on Sunday, unfortunately it never did. It’s good news for the superstar outfielder’s availability going forward though, as he should return to the Padres’ starting lineup early in the week. Rotoworld Sunday, 4:45 pm

    • Sonny Gray electric in win over Giants
Sonny Gray allowed one run on one hit in seven innings in a win over the Giants on Sunday.

Advice: Gray also struck out eight and walked none while posting a 30 percent whiff rate and 39 percent CSW. He only made one real mistake on the day, allowing a solo home run to Patrick Bailey in the seventh inning. The Giants averaged just 81.6 mph on all balls put in play during the game, and Gray now has a 2.81 ERA heading into a start against the Reds at home next week. Rotoworld Sunday, 3:09 pm

    • Nick Lodolo takes first loss since May
Nick Lodolo lost to the Red Sox after yielding four runs — three earned — in 4 2/3 innings Sunday.

Advice: Lodolo hadn’t allowed more than two runs in winning five straight starts since returning from the IL, but he didn’t have quite the same stuff today. With his curveball a little off, he settled for seven missed swings in the 77-pitch outing. He also walked four. He’ll look to start a new winning streak next weekend against the Cardinals; that’s the team he beat a month ago to begin the one that concluded today. Rotoworld Sunday, 2:30 pm

    • Limited by blister
Lodolo was limited Sunday versus the Red Sox as a result of a blister on his left index finger, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Advice: Lodolo tossed 4.2 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and four walks while striking out three batters against Boston. The left-hander was tagged with the loss, while the four free passes were a season high, which is likely the result of the blister on his throwing hand. Following the contest, Lodolo said that "the feeling for the ball was not the same," but that it's "not impacting him a ton," so it's possible he'll be ready to go for his next start. The 26-year-old is tentatively set to return to the mound Friday in St. Louis, but his status will be worth monitoring in the coming days. Rotowire.com Sunday, 2:27 pm

    • Fernando Tatis Jr. out again Sunday due to injury
Fernando Tatis Jr. (triceps, quad) remains out of the lineup for Sunday’s series finale against the Brewers.

Advice: Tatis will miss his second consecutive contest after being drilled in the left triceps by a pitch during Friday’s showdown at Petco Park. If there’s a positive takeaway here it’s that the 25-year-old fantasy superstar didn’t need to undergo any precautionary imaging and is merely day-to-day with a triceps contusion. He’s also been playing through a lingering quad issue, which might be the more pressing issue at the moment. There should be a decision from San Diego concerning his status at some point early next week. Rotoworld Sunday, 10:53 am

    • Sitting again Sunday
Tatis (triceps) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against Milwaukee.

Advice: Tatis exited Friday's 9-5 win after getting hit in the left arm by a pitch, and he'll now miss his second consecutive start as a result. David Peralta will once again start in right field while Donovan Solano serves as San Diego's designated hitter. According to MLB.com, Padres manager Mike Shildt said Tatis would have been available to pinch hit in Saturday's 6-2 loss if an opportunity presented itself, so the 25-year-old would appear to be day-to-day and could be ready to return to the lineup during the Padres' upcoming three-game series with the Nationals that begins Monday.
