    • Kyle Hendricks whiffs eight in win over Giants
Kyle Hendricks struck out eight and allowed one run over 5 2/3 innings on Wednesday in a win over the Giants.

Advice: Hendricks carried a no-hit bid into the sixth inning on Wednesday afternoon at Wrigley Field before coughing up a leadoff double to Thairo Estrada, who came around to score later in the frame on a ground out from Heliot Ramos. He induced 14 swinging strikes and finished with a near-elite 39 percent CSW. It was his strongest outing of the season by a considerable margin. The soft-tossing 34-year-old veteran is too risky to trust in shallow mixed leagues in the wake of his early-season struggles, but he’s making the most of his opportunity to step back into Chicago’s injury-ravaged starting rotation. He’ll take the ball on Tuesday in a rematch against the Giants out in San Francisco at Oracle Park. Rotoworld Today, 3:34 pm

    • Locks down 16th save
Bednar earned the save Wednesday against the Reds, pitching a perfect ninth inning to seal a 1-0 victory.

Advice: It's the second straight hitless appearance from Bednar after he allowed home runs in each of his previous two outings. Still, the right-hander has been solid of late following a rocky start to the campaign, allowing just three runs in his last 17.1 innings. Overall, Bednar's converted 16-of-19 save opportunities this year while pitching to a 5.17 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 32:7 K:BB across 31.1 innings. Rotowire.com Today, 2:52 pm

    • Should be available Thursday
Fairbanks said his bruised right thumb "felt within the realm of good" after playing catch Wednesday, and he expects to be available for Thursday's series finale in Minnesota, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Advice: The right-hander departed Tuesday's contest after being struck in the thumb by a comebacker, but it appears he's avoided a serious injury. Jason Adam, Garrett Cleavinger and Colin Poche will likely all be in the mix if a save opportunity arises Wednesday, but Fairbanks should be back on the mound for the Rays within the next couple days. • Pete Fairbanks (thumb) expects to return Thursday
Pete Fairbanks (thumb) played catch on Wednesday and noted that, “everything felt within the realm of good”.

Advice: He won’t be available out of the Rays’ bullpen on Wednesday night, but he hopes that he’ll be ready to go on Thursday. Should a save situation arise on Wednesday, expect either Jason Adam or Garrett Cleavinger to get the nod. Rotoworld Today, 2:31 pm
    • Undergoes surgery
Orioles general manager Mike Elias said Wednesday that Coulombe underwent surgery Tuesday to remove bone chips in his left elbow, Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun reports.

Advice: Elias said that the Orioles are still hopeful that Coulombe will be able to return to the team's bullpen before the end of the season, though the earliest possible return for the left-hander would likely be sometime in September. A clearer target date for a return timeline may emerge once the 34-year-old is cleared to begin throwing, but he's in line for a long stay on the injured list no matter what. • Danny Coulombe has bone chips removed from elbow
Danny Coulombe underwent a successful procedure to have bone chips removed from his left elbow.

Advice: The 34-year-old southpaw is hopeful that he’ll be able to return to the Orioles’ bullpen at some point in September. Before landing on the injured list with left elbow inflammation, Coulombe had registered an outsanding 2.42 ERA, 0.62 WHIP and a 28/3 K/BB ratio over 26 innings in 29 appearances out of the O’s bullpen this season. • Collects 18th save
Suarez struck out one in a perfect ninth inning Wednesday to record his 18th save of the season in a 5-2 win over the Phillies.

Advice: One day after blowing his first save chance of the season, Suarez was back in his usual form, firing nine of 13 pitches for strikes as he shut down the Phillies' 6-7-8 hitters. The 33-year-old right-hander came into 2024 with only one career save, but he's having a breakout campaign as the Padres' closer, posting a 1.17 ERA, 0.78 WHIP and 29:6 K:BB through 30.2 innings. • Takes part in pregame throwing
Fairbanks (thumb) was spotted throwing long toss and playing catch on the field prior to Wednesday's game in Minnesota, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Advice: The Rays haven't disclosed whether Fairbanks will be available out of the bullpen Wednesday, but his ability to take part in some pregame throwing work one day after being lifted from his appearance in Tuesday's 7-6 loss at least offers hope that he'll avoid a stint on the injured list. After being struck in his pitching hand by a 103-mp comebacker off the bat of Carlos Correa, Fairbanks was diagnosed with a bruised right thumb after X-rays returned negative. • Another scoreless outing
Lopez (5-2) earned the win Wednesday over the Tigers, allowing seven hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out six.

Advice: It's the second straight scoreless outing for Lopez, though he failed to make it through six innings for just the second time in his last six starts. The 30-year-old right-hander lowered his ERA to a remarkable 1.57 with a 1.08 WHIP and 76:23 K:BB across 74.1 innings this year. Lopez is currently lined up for a road matchup with the Cardinals early next week in his next start. Rotowire.com Today, 12:54 pm
