    • Astros don’t provide update on Cristian Javier
      Astros’ manager Joe Espada did not give an update on right-handers Cristian Javier and Jose Urquidy on Friday, aside from saying that he’s giving both pitchers space while they are awaiting second opinions.

      Advice: If that’s not discouraging enough, Espada also refused to comment when asked if the pitchers’ UCL’s were intact. Lovely.       Cole (elbow) could make his first rehab start Tuesday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

      Advice: Cole threw live batting practice Thursday, and his next step will likely be a lengthy rehab assignment.     • Gerrit Cole (elbow) close to rehab assignment
      Gerrit Cole (elbow) threw a 43-pitch simulated game on Thursday.

      Advice: Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters Thursday that Cole could start a minor league rehab assignment as early as next week. The initial hope was for Cole to return sometime in June, and that could remain a possibility if he is indeed able to begin a rehab assignment in the next week or so. Stay tuned.     • Improves to 6-0 in May
      Gil (7-1) picked up the win Wednesday over the Angels, allowing one run on two hits and two walks while striking out nine over eight frames.

      Advice: Gil continued his fantastic start to the campaign Wednesday, allowing just one hit over the first six innings before surrendering a solo home run to Logan O'Hoppe in the seventh. The right-hander produced 15 whiffs on the night while posting at least eight strikeouts for the third consecutive outing. Gil has now logged six quality starts in a row and improved to 6-0 in May after the win over Los Angeles. Over that stretch, he carries a ridiculous 0.70 ERA to go along with a 44:12 K:BB.     • Luis Gil dominant again in win over Angels
      Luis Gil held the Angels to one run with nine strikeouts over eight innings to earn the win on Wednesday.

      Advice: Gil was outstanding once again, holding the Angels to one run over eight frames. He allowed just two hits and two walks, giving up a solo homer to Logan O’Hoppe in the seventh inning. He struck out nine. It was the fifth consecutive start for Gil with at least six innings and no more than one run allowed. The 25-year-old right-hander will take an excellent 1.99 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, and a 79/31 K/BB ratio across 63 1/3 innings into a start against the Twins in New York on Tuesday.     • Will face hitters again Thursday
      Cole (elbow) is expected to throw live batting practice Thursday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

      Advice: Thursday's session will be Cole's third against hitters and his first since throwing 30 pitches in a two-inning simulated game Saturday. There had been some talk after that session of the right-hander potentially next advancing to a minor-league rehab assignment, but it appears that isn't in the cards quite yet.     • Limited workload Wednesday
      Paxton came away with a no-decision in Wednesday's 10-3 win over the Mets, giving up two hits over three scoreless innings. He struck out three without walking a batter.

      Advice: The veteran lefty was pitching on just four days' rest, and per Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register, was told prior to the outing that his workload would be limited. Paxton wound up tossing exactly 50 pitches (29 strikes), as the Dodgers effectively went with a bullpen day and used six relievers after he left the mound. Paxton will take a 3.29 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 31:28 K:BB through 52 innings into his next outing -- when he should see a more usual workload in a road start against the Pirates.       James Paxton tallied three strikeouts over three shutout innings on Wednesday in a no-decision against the Mets.

      Advice: It was an abbreviated outing for Paxton on Wednesday afternoon at Citi Field as the veteran lefty took the ball on four days rest for the first time this season and was lifted after just 50 pitches (29 strikes).       Cortes allowed two runs on five hits and struck out four without walking a batter over 5.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Angels on Tuesday.

      Advice: Cortes allowed multiple runs for the first time in three starts, but it was still a passable outing for the southpaw. He allowed a total of nine runs (eight earned) over 29 innings across five starts in May while adding a 30:8 K:BB in that span.
