    • Return pushed back again
Smith (shoulder) will not be activated from the injured list Wednesday, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.

Advice: He will have his return pushed back a second time because the Mets need length from their bullpen and Smith isn't ready to provide that yet. Presumably, Smith is now set to be activated Thursday. He's been out since late April with right shoulder inflammation. Rotowire.com 16 minutes ago

    • Mets designate Yohan Ramírez for assignment
Mets designated RHP Yohan Ramírez for assignment.

Advice: Ramírez’s second stint with the Mets this season ends after three scoreless innings, and he’ll likely go back on waivers. He has a 6.91 ERA in 14 1/3 innings overall for the Mets and Orioles this season. Rotoworld 18 minutes ago
    • Taking seat against southpaw
Rosario is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the White Sox, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.

Advice: With left-hander Garrett Crochet on the hill for Chicago, the lefty-hitting Rosario will hit the bench for the series finale. Rosario picked up starts in the corner outfield in both ends of Tuesday's doubleheader, going a collective 2-for-9 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Rotowire.com 18 minutes ago

    • Getting rare day off
Abrams is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the White Sox, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.

Advice: The lefty-hitting Abrams started in both ends of Tuesday's doubleheader and the White Sox are bringing a lefty (Garrett Crochet) to the hill for Wednesday's series finale, so Nationals manager Dave Martinez likely decided that Abrams could benefit from a game off. With Abrams out of the lineup for the first time since April 8, lightly used Rule 5 pick Nasim Nunez will pick up a rare start at shortstop. Rotowire.com 20 minutes ago

    • Mets demote José Buttó in spite of 3.08 ERA
Mets optioned RHP José Buttó to Triple-A Syracuse.

Advice: This is a surprise, but the Mets needed a starter for today (Joey Lucchesi, who is coming up from Triple-A) and the team just doesn’t have many optionable pitchers; it was just Buttó, Christian Scott and Reed Garrett. Buttó, who was 1-3 with a 3.08 ERA in seven starts, might rejoin the rotation in 10 days, though the Mets will also have Tylor Megill and David Peterson as rotation candidates then. • Looks good in rehab outing
Francis (forearm) struck out four batters and allowed only one hit over two scoreless innings Tuesday in a rehab appearance for Triple-A Buffalo.

Advice: The right-hander was shut down in late April due to forearm tendinitis, but Francis' sharp rehab outing suggests he's just about ready to rejoin the big-league staff. Alek Manoah is coming off a strong start as the fifth starter, so Francis will likely be ticketed for long relief when he returns. After a couple rough outings in the rotation to begin the season, Francis has 2.84 ERA and 5:3 K:BB in 6.1 relief innings for the Blue Jays. Rotowire.com 21 minutes ago
    • On bench for series finale
Winker is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the White Sox, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.

Advice: Winker was held out of the lineup for the front end of Tuesday's doubleheader while he recovered from back spasms, but he was back in the starting nine at designated hitter for the Nationals' 4-0 loss in the nightcap, going 0-for-4 with a strikeout. The Nationals haven't indicated that Winker suffered a setback with his back coming out of Tuesday's contest, so his absence Wednesday likely has more to do with the White Sox bringing a lefty (Garrett Crochet) to the hill. • Throws again Tuesday
Cole (elbow) threw approximately 36 pitches in a bullpen session Tuesday, per MLB.com.

Advice: Cole continues to incrementally increase his pitch count during his throwing sessions -- his previous bullpen took place Saturday and included 29 pitches. The veteran right-hander sat at around 89 mph with his fastball in that session, so he appears to still have a ways to go to get back up to full speed, but so far his recovery seems to be going smoothly, with manager Aaron Boone characterizing Cole's outlook as "onward and upward." There's no indication yet of when Cole may begin a rehab assignment, but he isn't likely to be activated off the IL until after the start of June. Rotowire.com 24 minutes ago

    • Summoned from Triple-A
The Mets recalled Vientos from Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday.

Advice: He'll assume the 26-man active roster spot of infielder Joey Wendle, who was designated for assignment in a corresponding move. Vientos will likely be limited to a short-side platoon role at third base behind the lefty-hitting Brett Baty while he's up with the big club. Rotowire.com 29 minutes ago
