• Padres option Matthew Batten back to Triple-A
Padres optioned INF Matthew Batten to Triple-A El Paso.

Advice: With Manny Machado returning from the paternity list on Friday night, someone needed to get the boot from the active roster and it would appear as though Batten drew the short straw this time. The 28-year-old is just 1-for-3 (.333) with a single in his limited time with the Padres this season. Rotoworld 31 minutes ago

  • Junior Caminero (quad) considered day-to-day
Morgan Ensberg, the manager at Triple-A Durham, told reporters on Friday that top prospect Junior Caminero is considered day-to-day after tweaking his quad on Thursday.

Advice: Caminero was lifted from Thursday’s game in the third inning after sustaining the injury. Ensberg explained that he wasn’t going to put Caminero in any jeopardy, so he pulled him as a precaution. The 20-year-old phenom ran and did defensive work without issue on Friday but was getting another night off just to be on the safe side. He could be used off the bench in Friday’s game and should return to the starting lineup on Saturday. Rotoworld 47 minutes ago
  • Padres activate Manny Machado from paternity list
Padres activated INF Manny Machado from the paternity list.

Advice: Machado was away from the club over the first half of the week as he welcomed his first child — a healthy baby boy — into the world. The proud papa will start at third base for the first time all season and will bat cleanup against Aaron Nola and the Phillies on Friday evening in San Diego. Rotoworld Today, 4:18 pm

  • Optioned to El Paso
The Padres optioned Batten to Triple-A El Paso on Friday.

Advice: Batten didn't appear in a game during his latest stint in the big leagues, and he will now return to the minors as Machado returns from paternity leave. Batten is slashing .224/.318/.293 across 66 plate appearances at Triple-A. Rotowire.com Today, 2:52 pm

  • Starting at third base Friday
Machado (personal) was added to the active roster and is starting at third base for Friday's game against the Phillies, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Advice: Machado was placed on the paternity list Monday and ended up missing the Padres' last four games. What's notable about Friday's game is that Machado is starting at third base for the first time since getting surgery on his right elbow in October, while Graham Pauley serves as the designated hitter. Machado's return is a welcome one with rookie Jackson Merrill missing his second straight game due to a lingering groin issue. Machado is slashing .260/.324/.417 with four home runs and 12 RBI over 105 plate appearances to start the season. Rotowire.com Today, 2:45 pm

  • Hamstring partially torn
Rendon said Friday that he has a high-grade partial tear of his left hamstring, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.

Advice: Rendon landed on the injured list Sunday with a left hamstring strain, but it appears his injury is more severe than the Angels initially thought. There is no timetable in place for his return, but he will certainly be sidelined for longer than the 10-day minimum. Miguel Sano been serving as Los Angeles' primary third baseman since Rendon got injured and should continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Rotowire.com Today, 2:44 pm

  • Rendon dealing with high grade hamstring tear
Anthony Rendon told reporters on Friday that he’s dealing with a high grade partial tear of his left hamstring.

Advice: There’s still no timetable on how long he’ll be shelved for, but he’s not going to be back any time soon. Expect the Angels to continue to mix and match at third base in his absence, with Miguel Sano, Luis Rengifo and Ehire Adrianza all helping to carry the load there. Rotoworld Today, 2:36 pm

  • Starting Friday
Sano (knee) is starting at third base and hitting in the cleanup spot for Friday's game against the Twins, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Sano left Wednesday's game against the Orioles due to left knee soreness. He's apparently feeling better after the Angels' day off Thursday and is ready to play against his former team Friday. The 30-year-old is slashing .271/.362/.373 with three doubles, eight runs, one home run and five RBI over 69 plate appearances while drawing eight walks to start the season. • Going through full workout
Burger (oblique) will go through a full on-field workout Friday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Burger is nearly two weeks removed from suffering a left intercostal strain and is finally ready to resume all baseball activities. It would appear a rehab assignment is just around the corner, with a return sometime in early- to mid-May if all goes well. Rotowire.com Today, 1:53 pm
