      Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Tuesday that Alvarez (thumb) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Binghamton on Thursday, Jorge Castillo of ESPN.com reports.

      Advice: Mendoza offered that Alvarez will catch 5-to-7 innings in his first game with Binghamton and build up from there. Alvarez is five weeks removed from undergoing surgery to repair a torn UCL in his left thumb.       Francisco Alvarez (thumb) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Binghamton on Thursday.

      Advice: That according to Mets manager Carlos Mendoza, who also told reporters the catcher is expected to be behind the plate for five to seven innings. Alvarez was able to take batting practice over the weekend, and the 22-year-old backstop was reportedly hitting the ball hard as he works his way back from the thumb injury that has kept him out since April.     • Looking good in batting practice
      Alvarez (thumb) was reaching exit velocities over 100 miles per hour during batting practice over the weekend, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports.

      Advice: The 22-year-old catcher is still wearing a splint on his surgically repaired thumb, however, and the Mets aren't going to rush him back from the 10-day injured list. The team may also use his recovery period to have him work on his positioning behind the plate, as Alvarez has a tendency to be overeager reaching for pitches and is susceptible to getting his glove hand smacked by a swing.       Steele did not factor into the decision Monday against Milwaukee, allowing three hits and one walk over seven shutout innings. He struck out eight.

      Advice: Steele posted his best start since returning from a hamstring injury May 6, generating 13 whiffs in 93 total pitches. The Cubs lefty limited a ferocious Brewers offense that entered with the fourth-best team wRC+ at 115, allowing Milwaukee to scatter only four singles.       Justin Steele threw seven shutout innings and got a no-decision against the Brewers on Monday.



      Advice: Steele allowed three hits, a walk and struck out eight. He looked like the pitcher we saw last year who had a 3.06 ERA and 176 strikeouts. Steele lowered his ERA to 4.45, but there should still be room for growth as his xFIP is 3.71. The 28-year-old left-hander is set to face the Reds on the road this weekend.

      Carter went 0-for-2 in Sunday's 6-2 win over the Twins.

      Advice: Carter's hitless run reached 20 consecutive at-bats, and he's just two for his last 38. With Wyatt Langford (hamstring) possibly set to return Tuesday, the Rangers could send Carter back down to the minors to fix whatever is not working for him right now.       Wacha (4-5) allowed two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out seven over six-plus innings, taking the loss Sunday versus the Rays.

      Advice: Wacha was perfect through five innings and pitched around two baserunners in the sixth. He then gave up two hits to start the seventh, and John Schreiber allowed both runners plus two more to come around to score. Despite the loss, this was Wacha's fourth straight quality start and his sixth such outing of the season. He's pitched to a 4.31 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 54:19 K:BB through 62.2 innings over 11 starts this season. He's projected to make his next start at home versus his most recent former team, the Padres.       Michael Wacha pitched six-plus innings on Sunday against the Rays. He struck out seven, walked one, and allowed two earned runs.

      Advice: Wacha took a perfect game into the sixth inning in this one and seemed completely in control until a Rays’ rally in the seventh chased him and John Schreiber allowed both of Wacha’s inherited runners to come home.
