    • Justin Steele throws complete game for first win
Justin Steele went the distance for his first win of 2024, pitching a two-hitting in a 5-1 game against the Angels.

Advice: The Cubs didn’t need to turn to their shaky pen this time out, as Steele finished off the Angels in just 95 pitches. He struck out seven and walked two for his first win in 13 starts this season and 18 outings dating back to last year, when he opened up 16-3 before going 0-2 in his final four turns and perhaps costing himself a Cy Young Award. Of course, it was hardly his fault that he was 0-3 this year coming into this one. His ERA stands at 2.95 after this one. Rotoworld Yesterday, 2:32 pm

    • Throws complete game for first win
Steele (1-3) earned the win against the Angels on Friday, allowing one run on two hits and two walks with seven strikeouts over nine innings.

Advice: Steele needed just 95 pitches to toss his first career complete game. The only blemish was an RBI single by Taylor Ward in the fifth, but the lefty responded by retiring 13 consecutive batters to seal his much overdue first win of the year. The 29-year-old has logged six straight quality starts and owns a 2.95 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 77:18 K:BB over 79.1 innings this season. He lines up for a road matchup with the Orioles next week. • Suffers ugly loss Thursday
Maeda (2-5) allowed nine runs on nine hits across 3.2 innings to take the loss Thursday against the Twins. He walked three and struck out three.

Advice: It was another ugly performance for Maeda, who saw his season ERA climb to 6.71. Outside of a clean first inning, the veteran allowed multiple runs to score in each of his other frames. Maeda had a decent 2023 campaign for these same Twins, posting a 4.23 ERA and 1.17 WHIP across 104.1 innings, but he hasn't carried that over into his first season in Detroit. The righty lines up to start again Tuesday against the Guardians, though at this point he can't be trusted by fantasy managers. Rotowire.com Thursday, 6:19 pm

    • Kenta Maeda tagged for nine runs by former team
Kenta Maeda was lit up for nine runs in 3 2/3 innings by his former team in a loss to the Twins on Thursday.

Advice: It’d be nice to think that such an awful performance was the result of his old team knowing something no one else did, but Maeda actually turned in one of his better starts of the year against the Twins back in April. This makes losses in four straight decisions for him, and his ERA stands at 6.71. Maybe the Tigers will try stashing him on the IL again, though that didn’t work in May. It seems more likely that they’ll just live with the results, as contention scarcely appears to be in the cards anyway. He’s in the first year of a two-year deal, so releasing him isn’t likely to be considered. Rotoworld Thursday, 1:31 pm

    • Bryce Harper (hamstring) getting closer to return
Phillies manager Rob Thomson said both Bryce Harper (hamstring) and J.T. Realmuto (knee) are running at 75% intensity.

Advice: The Phillies will be home for six games next week and then have the All-Star break, so there’s no reason to rush either Harper or Realmuto, but Thomson said that the Phillies won’t hold either of them back if they’re ready to go before the break. Given the nature of Realmuto’s injury and his age, it’s more likely Harper will return before the break than Realmuto. However, the Phillies have a solid lead in the NL East, so the team could decide to be cautious with both and hold them out for next week. One would assume that if the Phillies don’t bring either Harper or Realmuto back for the early week series against the Dodgers, they will certainly hold them out for the weekend series against the Athletics. • Slugs 19th homer Wednesday
Hernandez went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in a loss to Arizona on Wednesday.

Advice: The Dodgers scored all their runs in the first inning, and their final tally came on Hernandez's solo shot. The long ball was his 19th of the campaign, putting the veteran outfielder one home run away from reaching the 20-homer mark for the sixth straight full season (he hit 16 during the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign). Hernandez is on pace to challenge his career-best marks of 32 home runs and 116 RBI, which he established with Toronto in 2021. Rotowire.com Thursday, 10:35 am

    • Doing drills at 70-to-75 percent
Phillies manager Rob Thomson said Thursday that Harper (hamstring) is currently able to go through drills at 70-to-75 percent intensity, Corey Seidman of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports.

Advice: Harper is eligible for activation July 9 as he works his way back from a strained left hamstring. While the Phillies won't hesitate to activate Harper next week if he's ready, they do have the All-Star break looming the following week if they decide to give the first baseman a little more time. • Picks up fifth win
Wacha (5-6) earned the win Wednesday over the Rays, allowing one run on two hits and three walks while striking out eight over six innings.

Advice: Wacha gave up a first-inning home run to Isaac Paredes and settled in from there with another excellent start. He's now allowed two or fewer earned runs in eight straight starts and matched his season high with eight strikeouts. Wacha owns a 3.74 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 75:26 K:BB in 84.1 innings and lines up for a road start against the Cardinals next week. Rotowire.com Thursday, 8:39 am

    • Begins swinging bat
Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said Wednesday that Carter (back) flew to Arizona last week and has begun swinging a bat, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.

Advice: This marks the first time Carter has swung a bat since landing on the injured list in early June. Bochy indicated the plan calls for Carter to face live pitching in the next few days. The injury was first described as lower-back tightness but was then reclassified as a stress reaction, which prompted the lengthy rehab. Rotowire.com Thursday, 5:17 am
