    • Tanner Bibee struggles in loss to Angels on Friday
      Tanner Bibee struggled in a losing effort against the Angels on Friday night, allowing six runs on eight hits over his five innings of work.

      Advice: Bibee walked one and struck out four in the contest. The 25-year-old right-hander followed up one of his best starts of the season with an absolute dud against a depleted Angels’ squad on Friday night. The bulk of the damage came via the long ball, with Nolan Schanuel clubbing a solo homer in the third inning and Mickey Moniak adding a three-run blast in the fourth. Bibee generated nine swings and misses on 91 pitches on the night, posting an underwhelming CSW of only 23 percent.     • Could piggyback another starter
      The Phillies are considering piggybacking Turnbull with another starter, Corey Seidman of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports.

      Advice: Turnbull's stint in the Phillies' rotation was supposed to be temporary while Taijuan Walker (shoulder) worked his way back. However, Turnbull has pitched so well -- posting a 1.67 ERA and 36:10 K:BB in 32.1 innings -- that the club is considering ways to keep him in its rotation even with Walker back in the fold. A six-man rotation hasn't been ruled out, although manager Rob Thomson has indicated it's unlikely. More likely, it seems, is that Turnbull and another starter -- either Walker or Cristopher Sanchez -- are used in tandem, with the decision on who would start and who would be in long relief that day depending on the opposition. Turnbull could still eventually shift to the bullpen -- he hasn't thrown more than 56.2 innings in a season since 2019 -- but it doesn't sound like that's going to happen yet.       Gavin Williams (elbow) resumed throwing on Thursday.

      Advice: Guardians manager Stephen Vogt added that Williams was re-evaluated earlier and cleared to resume throwing and is on the road back to rejoining Cleveland’s starting rotation. The 24-year-old righty was shut down from throwing last week due to renewed elbow discomfort and has been on the shelf since spring training following a couple setbacks in his rehabilitation process.       Williams (elbow) resumed throwing Thursday, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.

      Advice: Williams was cleared by doctors to restart his throwing program Wednesday, and manager Stephen Vogt said the 24-year-old righty was able to get through his throwing session Thursday without any pain.     • Spencer Turnbull solid for 5 1/3 innings
      Spencer Turnbull yielded two runs — one earned — in 5 1/3 innings Tuesday in a no-decision against the Angels.

      Advice: This will likely be Turnbull’s final start for a while, as Taijuan Walker’s return has restored the Phillies’ planned rotation. Still, Turnbull seems like a better bet than Walker going forward, and while it’s unlikely that he’d hold up over the course of 32 starts, he might be a fantasy factor again later this year.     • Another strong start
      Turnbull didn't factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and no walks over 5.1 innings against the Angels. He struck out six.

      Advice: The only run charged against Turnbull came in the third inning when Zach Neto tagged him for a solo homer. The 31-year-old hasn't allowed more than four hits in a game this season, and with the Phillies expected to trim their six-man rotation back to five now that Taijuan Walker is healthy, Turnbull has certainly made a case for maintaining a starting role. However, after dealing with severe injuries in 2022 and 2023, the Phillies could look to watch his workload early in hopes of keeping him fresh throughout the long season. If Turnbull sticks in the rotation, he'd likely toe the rubber early next week, either in the series finale against the Giants or the series opener against Toronto.       Cortes (1-3) took the loss Tuesday against the Orioles, allowing four runs on eight hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out five.

      Advice: Three of Baltimore's four runs off Cortes came in the fourth inning, as the 29-year-old left-hander took a second straight loss. Cortes had gone seven innings in each of his previous two outings, allowing just three runs while striking out 13 in that span. His ERA now sits at 3.86 with a 1.10 WHIP and 37:7 K:BB across seven starts (42 innings). Cortes is currently scheduled to face the Tigers at home in his next start.       Nestor Cortes allowed four runs on eight hits in six innings in a loss to the Orioles on Tuesday.

      Advice: It wasn’t a bad day overall for Cortes, who has a 20 percent whiff rate but just a 24 percent CSW. The Orioles weren’t fooled by much and had 11 hard-hit baseballs against Cortes on the night. The left-hander relies a lot on deception, so when hitters have their timing against him, it’s going to be hard for him to find success.       Crochet didn't factor into the decision Monday, allowing two runs on two hits and one walk across five innings against the Twins. He struck out seven.

      Advice: After surrendering five or more runs in three straight starts, Crochet snapped out of the funk and only allowed the Twins to score on a two-run homer by Carlos Santana in the second frame. Crochet also had strong command, walking just one batter after yielding seven walks and two hit-by-pitches in his last three outings. Although Crochet has been inconsistent to kick off 2024, his strikeout stuff has been elite, boasting the second most K's in baseball. He's lined up for a Saturday start against the Cardinals.
