      Pivetta (elbow) allowed four runs on three hits and four walks while striking out five over three-plus innings for Triple-A Worcester on Thursday.

      Advice: Pivetta threw 62 pitches in the first and possibly only start while on a rehab assignment. He ran into immediate trouble, walking the first two batters of the game then giving up three straight singles. He settled in after that, retiring the next nine batters, before he was pulled following another two walks to lead off the fourth inning. "Repertoire felt good, just wasn't throwing a ton of strikes," Pivetta told Tommy Cassell of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette. "I have some mechanical adjustments to work on but we'll be fine." Red Sox manager Alex Cora previously indicated Pivetta would need just one rehab start, and if that's the case, the right-hander is on schedule for next week's two-game set against Atlanta on Tuesday or Wednesday.       Carter started in center field and went 1-for-4 with an RBI in Thursday's 6-0 win over Washington.

      Advice: Carter got the rare start against a left-hander and produced his second hit in 16 at-bats against a southpaw. Texas manager Bruce Bochy has shied away from using Carter in these situations but gave him a shot Thursday with Leody Taveras getting the night off. Rangers general manager Chris Young explained to Kennedi Landry of MLB.com that at this point in his MLB career, Carter has not faced the quality of stuff that major-league lefties possess, suggesting the team is bringing the 21-year-old along slowly in that regard. "I think [Bochy] is doing a very good job of giving him his fair share of at-bats against lefties knowing that there's only one way to develop, and that's to go through it," the GM said.       Eovaldi (groin) will undergo an MRI on Friday, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports.

      Advice: Eovaldi, who was removed from Thursday's win over the Nationals, will travel with the club to Kansas City for the procedure. Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said the team is "being cautious" with the 34-year-old right-hander, whose next turn is due Tuesday.       Advice: The Reds' bats went quiet on their 2-4 road trip against the Rangers and Padres, hitting .201 as a team while averaging 10 strikeouts per game on the trip. Of course, Encarnacion-Strand has been struggling this year in both aspects, hitting .196 with a troubling 3:31 BB:K ratio in 108 plate appearances. Perhaps with better health and better weather he will come close to displaying the form he showed in 2023, when he hit .270/.328/.477 in 241 plate appearances at the big-league level.       Nick Pivetta (elbow) struck out five and gave up four runs over three innings on Thursday in a minor league rehab start for Triple-A Worcester.

      Advice: As expected, Pivetta threw 62 pitches (36 strikes) in his rehab outing and figures to be ready to take the ball next week against the Braves, most likely on Tuesday, down at Truist Park.       Max Scherzer (back, thumb) is likely to make a minor league rehab start next week.

      Advice: Scherzer told reporters Thursday that his thumb is improving and he was able to resume playing catch without any issues. The hope is that he’ll be ready for a minor league outing at some point next week. Barring any further setbacks, he could return to Texas’ starting rotation mix by mid-May.       Edwin Díaz hurled two scoreless innings against the Cubs on Thursday.

      Advice: It comes in a non-save situation, but fantasy managers who roster Díaz get to see their ERA drop with the scoreless frames. He also picked up a pair of strikeouts, and that improves his K/BB to 19/4 over 12 2/3 innings. There really hasn’t been much — if any — rust to shake off for Díaz after missing all of 2023.       MLP Pipeline’s Jonathan Mayo reports Paul Skenes will make his next start on Sunday for Triple-A Indianapolis.

      Advice: There was some social media buzz that Skenes could get the call this weekend to join Pittsburgh’s starting rotation, but that doesn’t appear to be in the cards. The 21-year-old top pitching prospect has reeled off six dominant outings at Triple-A Indianapolis to open the year, posting a surreal 0.39 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 41/6 K/BB ratio across 23 innings of work.
