      Nola (8-3) took the loss to the Red Sox on Thursday, allowing eight runs on 11 hits and two walks with two strikeouts over 3.2 innings.

      Advice: Nola had two disastrous innings, allowing four runs in both the second and fourth. The fourth inning was especially rough, as he surrendered a three-run homer to Tyler O'Neill and was unable to complete the frame. According to Matt Gelb of The Athletic, the eight earned runs allowed by Nola tied a career high, and his season ERA climbed from 2.77 to 3.48. Despite the rise in ERA, Nola had previously rattled off five consecutive quality starts and owns a 1.08 WHIP and 78:24 K:BB in 14 outings.       Aaron Nola allowed eight runs in 3 2/3 innings and got the loss against the Red Sox on Thursday.



      Advice: Nola gave up 11 hits, walked two and struck out two. He had allowed more than two runs in just three of his previous 13 starts. Nola allowed four runs in the second and fourth innings. His ERA jumped from 2.77 to 3.48 with the blow up. The 31-year-old right-hander will look to turn things back around against the Padres at home next week.

    • Secures eighth victory
      Gray (8-4) earned the win over Pittsburgh on Wednesday, allowing one run on four hits and one walk while striking out nine batters over seven innings.

      Advice: After allowing the first two batters he faced in the outing to reach base, Gray retired the next 12 hitters to step up against him. The Pirates managed a fifth-inning run on a pair of hits, but that was the only tally they were able to push across the plate. Gray finished with his first quality start since May 3 -- a span of seven appearances -- and snapped a personal two-game losing streak. The right-hander allowed seven runs across 9.2 innings during that two-game stretch, but with Wednesday's excellent outing he improved his overall season ERA to 3.01.       Sonny Gray pitched seven innings of one-run ball and struck out nine Wednesday against the Pirates.

      Advice: Coming off a down stretch that saw him post a 5.46 ERA in his previous six starts, Gray tonight turned in his first quality start since May 3. He’s now 8-4 with a 3.01 ERA overall. He’s somehow received decisions in all of his starts to date, and he’s the only pitcher qualified for the ERA title who can say that.     • Struggles continue against Angels
      Verlander did not factor into the decision in Sunday's 9-7 loss to the Angels, allowing four runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out three over five innings.

      Advice: Verlander had another pedestrian outing against one of the weaker lineups in baseball. The positives were that he didn't allow a home run or walk a batter, though he did give up seven hits for a second straight start and isn't missing many bats, evidenced by his 2.9 swinging strike percentage Sunday. Verlander has just seven strikeouts over his last 10 innings, and this is after coming off of back-to-back nine-strikeout performances to end May.     • Justin Verlander struggles again in no-decision
      Justin Verlander struggled again in a no-decision against the Angels on Sunday, giving up four runs on seven hits over his five frames.

      Advice: The 41-year-old hurler struck out three batters on the afternoon and didn’t allow a base on balls. The Angels scratched out a pair of runs on sacrifice flies off the bat of Nolan Schanuel, added another as Mickey Moniak bunted into a fielder’s choice in the fourth inning and then Willie Calhoun smacked a run-scoring single in the fifth. Still, Verlander exited with his team leading 7-4 and in line for a victory — but the Astros’ bullpen couldn’t hang on for him. He got just three swings and misses on 101 pitches in the game, posting a CSW of 28 percent.       Skubal (8-1) picked up the win Sunday versus Milwaukee, allowing one earned run on five hits and two walks while striking out 10 batters in 6.2 innings.

      Advice: Skubal nearly went seven scoreless innings, but he allowed an RBI triple to Brice Turang before being pulled. Skubal dominated the Brewers, inducing 17 swinging strikes and allowing only one extra-base hit, turning in his ninth quality start over his past 10 games. The southpaw has been one of the best pitchers in baseball, compiling a 1.92 ERA and a 0.89 WHIP with 96 strikeouts in 79.2 innings.     • Tarik Skubal strikes out 10 in defeating Brewers
      Tarik Skubal fanned 10 while limiting the Brewers to one run in 6 2/3 innings in the Tigers’ 10-2 victory Sunday.

      Advice: Skubal hit a career-high 101.7 mph on the gun today while working to Rhys Hoskins in the third. His other two hardest pitches in the game (99.4 and 99.1 mph) also came in that at-bat, which ended with Hoskins out on a foul popup. Skubal moved to 8-1 with a 1.92 ERA.       Gray (7-4) allowed three runs on two hits and four walks while striking out five over 4.2 innings to take the loss versus the Rockies on Thursday.

      Advice: The four walks were a season high for Gray, and he also uncorked two wild pitches, one of which allowed a run to score in the fifth inning. Gray's control issues have manifested with five straight starts where he's allowed multiple walks, and he's failed to complete six innings in any of his last four outings. The right-hander is now at a 3.21 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 82:19 K:BB over 61.2 innings through 11 starts this season. Gray is projected to make his next start at home versus the Pirates.
