• Takes extra-inning loss
Roycroft (1-1) allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits over two-thirds of an inning to take a blown save and the extra-inning loss versus the Marlins on Tuesday.

Advice: Due to recent workloads, the Cardinals were short in the bullpen Tuesday, leaving Roycroft to protect a one-run lead in the 10th inning. It didn't work out, as the right-hander saw his 6.2-inning scoreless streak come to an end. It's his first blown save, though he's still done a decent job at run prevention this year with a 3.38 ERA over 13.1 innings. He has a less impressive 1.65 WHIP and 12:8 K:BB while mainly working in a low-leverage role. Rotowire.com Today, 9:49 am
  • Getting spot start Wednesday
Liberatore will start Wednesday's game in Miami in place of the injured Kyle Gibson (back), Lynn Worthy of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Advice: Gibson was a late scratch, forcing the Cardinals to turn to Liberatore, who threw 12 pitches and allowed one run over two-thirds of an inning in a relief appearance during Tuesday's loss to the Marlins. Liberatore has made three starts for St. Louis this season, but his last one came a month ago. He hasn't thrown more than 23 pitches in an appearance since then and will be going on zero days' rest Wednesday, so he'll presumably be in store for an abbreviated outing. • Goes on paternity leave
The Cubs placed Thompson on the paternity list prior to Wednesday's game against the Giants, Mike McGraw of the Chicago Daily Herald reports.

Advice: After striking out the side in Tuesday's 5-2 win to net his first save of the season, Thompson will be away from the team for at least the next 1-to-3 games following the birth of his son earlier Wednesday. The Cubs called up right-hander Porter Hodge from Triple-A Iowa to take Thompson's spot in the bullpen. Rotowire.com Today, 9:35 am
  • Keegan Thompson nets save Tuesday for Cubs
Keegan Thompson struck out the side in the ninth inning on Tuesday against the Giants to record his first save of the season.

Advice: Thompson got the call to protect a three-run lead in the final frame with Héctor Neris and Mark Leiter Jr. seemingly unavailable after both throwing over 20 pitches the previous day. It’s a completely murky situation in Chicago at the moment, but it’s possible Thompson will work his way into the mix for saves moving forward, especially if Neris continues to struggle. • Collects first save
Thompson picked up the save in Tuesday's 5-2 win over San Francisco. He pitched a scoreless inning while striking out the side.

Advice: The Cubs right-hander wasted no time in gathering his fourth career save, requiring 15 pitches to fan three Giants hitters in the ninth inning. Thompson has a 4.30 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 23:7 K:BB over 14.2 innings this season. Although he earned the save Tuesday, don't expect saves chances to continue coming his way, as the back of the Chicago bullpen -- Hector Neris, Mark Leiter and Hayden Wesneski -- all pitched in Monday's loss. • Returning to mound
Anderson (elbow) will pitch in a Florida Complex League game Tuesday, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Anderson has been working his way back from the Tommy John surgery he underwent in April 2023 and Tuesday's outing will be his first in the recovery process. The right-hander will likely need to build up his workload over a series of weeks, including a multi-start rehab assignment before he'd be able to be activated from the minor-league 60-day injured list, but Tuesday is a welcome sign nonetheless. • Records 15th save
Bednar pitched a perfect ninth inning to pick up the save against the Reds in Monday's 4-1 win.

Advice: After serving up homers in each of his last two appearances, Bednar got back on track with a clean frame Monday. Bednar had a disastrous start to the season with 14 earned runs allowed in his first 13 outings, but he's turned it around with a 1.88 ERA over his last 19.1 innings. Despite the 5.34 ERA for the season, Bednar remains one of the better late-inning options, as his 15 saves are tied for eighth most in the majors. Rotowire.com Monday, 7:55 pm

  • David Bednar silences Reds to notch 15th save
David Bednar tossed a perfect frame on Monday against the Reds to record his 15th save of the season.

Advice: Bednar was summoned to protect a three-run lead in the final frame and required just 11 pitches (eight strikes) to spin a flawless frame. It was a nice rebound effort for the 29-year-old stopper after giving up solo homers in each of his previous two appearances. He’s converted 15 of his 18 save opportunities on the year. • Undergoes internal brace procedure
Wells (elbow) underwent a UCL revision and internal brace augmentation surgery Monday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

Advice: Wells avoided the second Tommy John surgery of his career, after he previously had the procedure in May 2019. However, while the internal brace procedure typically entails a shorter recovery timeline than Tommy John surgery, Wells will still miss the remainder of the 2024 campaign, and likely a few months of the 2025 season.
